crunchee Posted October 14, 2011 Posted October 14, 2011 A couple of years ago, I 'found' Facebook; it was like a new toy for awhile, and I collected 'Friends' like many noobs. The shine wore off of it after a few months, and I did a purge of many of these 'Friends', and kept only the ones that I actually knew...old class mates, work acquaintances, and family; in most cases just no longer the E-mail only crowd. I've noticed within the last year that some of my 'Old Friends' that got purged keep popping up on occasion, up on the 'People You May Know' block on the right upper corner of my Facebook page, as if they were a recommendation to re-friend. I haven't contacted or tried to contact these people since the purge, and they aren't connected to anybody I'm currently 'Friends' with, so what gives? Are they/have they been looking for me for some reason, or does Facebook have this huge corporate memory of every action I've ever done on my Facebook page, and likes to 'recycle' stuff? Anybody know why this happens? Has it happened to anybody else here at the HFC? No, I've not received any messages or requests from these people. Like most new technology, it makes me paranoid. Kinda like seeing the Firebird X for the first time. Anybody else here run into this on Facebook or something similar?
burningyen Posted October 14, 2011 Posted October 14, 2011 I think it tracks who you look up and who looks up you, among other things.
gtone Posted October 14, 2011 Posted October 14, 2011 I feel like a new man since I ditched my FB account completely. Frees you up in so many ways...
JGale Posted October 14, 2011 Posted October 14, 2011 Linked-In does something similar. Data mining for possible profit somehow linked to who you know.Drop it like the needy bitch it is.
Disturber Posted October 14, 2011 Posted October 14, 2011 I only use it as I need to be there professionally. It's getting scarier and scarier. Now that they added on Spotify anyone logged in can see what another person is listeing to. There are constant updates in the right field, a new feature, that is extremely annoying. And apparently there is a new "history" function also that lets other people check out your total facebook history. Don't know if it's true, haven't checked it out - but it sounds kinda scary.I just now have a complete ad-campaign out built around the feature that people can go in to facebook, pic a photo of themselves and send it in to our campaign. All accessed through an Android or Iphone phone. It's kinda cool.
BlueRedWhite Posted October 14, 2011 Posted October 14, 2011 I've done some configuration on my FBI accept everyone that i know that want to be my friend, but not all of them can see my profile. I took the time to configure everything to be seen only by a list of people to whom i talked almost every day. Some people just need to have as many friends as possible, and then they don't talk to you anymore...the only down is that with the newer changes i don't know if my configuration stands up...PS: i don't like twitter, Google+ is a piece of shite, i'll stay with FB...
specialk Posted October 14, 2011 Posted October 14, 2011 None of the above. Thankfully I've never been on FB, linked-in, or myspace, never tweeted, and Google is evil. I guess that just leaves pron,
Steve Haynie Posted October 15, 2011 Posted October 15, 2011 A friend keeps demanding that I get a Facebook account because the only two people who e-mail her are me and her mother. I refuse to live by Facebook. Instead, my hours are whiled away on the HFC message board.
Armitage Posted October 15, 2011 Posted October 15, 2011 Facebook also looks at your email address' and stuff from any opened email accounts. I couldn't figure out how it knew some people I never talked to, but did have their email address as a Hotmail contact.
gorch Posted October 16, 2011 Posted October 16, 2011 Facebook never delete anything. Their interpretation of privacy is strongly self-centric. Therefore, you should never wonder whatever happens to your identity or whatever relationship they dig in the data warehouse. Since Facebook is a privately held company they decide which information goes to the public at what time if ever. And please be aware that any step you make on the platform will be recorded to last 'forever'. The term freedom requires new definition concerning ethical implications of the Internet.
