Hbom Posted September 29, 2012 Posted September 29, 2012 I am getting ready to replace the bridge on my Studio with something that allows me to intonate individual strings. I have been looking for a bit and thought that I had choices down to; 1. Schaller, http://www.stewmac.c..._Tailpiece.html 2. Hipshot Baby Grand, wonder if it wouldn't provide more to rest my hand on. http://www.stewmac.c...and_Bridge.html 3. Gotoh 510 no pic So on Thursday Django posts his Carvin for sale, http://www.hamerfanc...thers-for-sale/ Now it's a little more cloudy. Can anyone tell me more about this bridge? It looks like a TP6 setup for single pair of posts. Are they available? I couldn't see any thing at Carvin.com or Gibson. Would I really want one or is it just cute? Any advice about any of the above bridges would be gratefully appreciated. Thanks to all D
Bloozguy Posted September 29, 2012 Posted September 29, 2012 Isn't anyone going to say it?Intonation is for pussies! All kidding aside, check out the pigtail bridge.
Andrew Posted September 29, 2012 Posted September 29, 2012 Can anyone tell me more about this bridge? This is a Schaller, early eighties as you probably know. They pop up on ebay occasionally but tend to go for high prices. Big and heavy but they repay the weight with a weighty sound. I have a Dean with one and it sustains for days hence the fashion for lightweight bridges never made sense to me. It functions well and the fine tuners are useful.

Don't forget that Schaller have stood the test of time.

I'd noticed that on new 'deluxe' Fender basses, they've been calling some bridges 'High Mass', which apparently means heavy. And I remember the brass aftermarket parts craze of the 70's. Maybe it has something to do with what suits the string gauges and the instrument?
kizanski Posted September 30, 2012 Posted September 30, 2012 Does that big hunk'o'shit come with a time machine?

That's what Murkat put on my SuperPro and the intonation is fantastic with individual string adjustments.
tomteriffic Posted September 30, 2012 Posted September 30, 2012 I have a Schaller with fine tuners like that. From the early eighties, it came stock on a guitar I bought new back then. Still have the guitar.. It sounds fantastic, is very lively, mojo, buttah, vibe etc. A couple of experimental swaps found me putting it right back on there.OTOH for simple and toneful the Pigtail is the bee's pajamas. Not intonatable beyond the most basic adjustments, but the top is machined in such a way that it intonates just fine. The thing rings like a bell when you drop it on a hard surface, so you know it has some good stuff going on. I just got done playing a converted P90 Special for 2 or 3 hours out of 6 hours of gigs today and it held up fine on all kinds of varied material.
Andrew Posted September 30, 2012 Posted September 30, 2012 Does that big hunk'o'shit come with a time machine?I should have realised that these big Schaller bridges were no good as the Guru Jol Danzig never used them on any of his guitars.

Hbom Posted September 30, 2012 Author Posted September 30, 2012 Good morning and thanks to all for your input. Looks like the big vote is for the PigTAIL,(edit for poor wit content. Thanks KIZ) I suppose you are right. I was just looking for other ideas. Something out of the norm. I have never been much for doing exactly what everyone else does. No Floyds at all. I had a Lucille for awhile with a TP6 and it was a great guitar. Mostly because it stayed in tune. This looks about the same so I needed to know. Thanks again for all of your replies. NOTE TO KIZ: To me it would only be ridiculous if I didn't check out all available options before I made a decision. But I do thank you for all of your input. Sometimes even the wrong answers are a path in the right direction.

django49 Posted October 3, 2012 Posted October 3, 2012 Re that tailpiece......I THINK it will be going out the door today, with the rest of the guitar. It does look a bit clunky....Well, MORE than a bit! Sort of a period piece, to go along with the brass nut. That guitar dates to 1987.In the meantime, the ES-347, which has the TP-6, departed late last week.If a few more things get outta here, I might have a little more space....
sixesandsevens Posted December 21, 2012 Posted December 21, 2012 How did it turn out? Are to liking the new bridge?
hectorp Posted December 22, 2012 Posted December 22, 2012 The Faber bridge (recommended by no less than the mighty Murkat and by the Matthai) intonates pretty damn well for stoptailpiece. This way you can play all up and down the neck in tune and be a real man.
Bobby Marshall Posted December 22, 2012 Posted December 22, 2012 I have a schaller without the fine tuners on an SG. the guitar is now the hammer of the gods.
stonge Posted December 22, 2012 Posted December 22, 2012 I have a pigtail with tonepros locking studs on my korina junior; stone-axe simple and rings like a bell.
Question
Hbom
I am getting ready to replace the bridge on my Studio with something that allows me to intonate individual strings.
I have been looking for a bit and thought that I had choices down to;
1. Schaller, http://www.stewmac.c..._Tailpiece.html
2. Hipshot Baby Grand, wonder if it wouldn't provide more to rest my hand on.

3. Gotoh 510 no pic
So on Thursday Django posts his Carvin for sale,
http://www.hamerfanc...thers-for-sale/
Now it's a little more cloudy.
Thanks to all
