Steve Haynie Posted November 6, 2012 Posted November 6, 2012 For my tour of the Ernie Ball factory we were told no photographs were allowed in the guitar string manufacturing area. Someone in the musical instrument business told me that guitar string manufacturers are secretive about their processes. There were people standing between what looked like lathes. A string was started on one machine and then the worker would turn around and start a string on the other machine. We were told that no machine could roll and package strings as well as a human.
zorrow Posted November 6, 2012 Posted November 6, 2012 Interesting... I was actually wondering yesterday if this one already existed. Thanks for sharing!
kizanski Posted November 6, 2012 Posted November 6, 2012 ...no machine could roll and package strings as well as a human.Anyone else find that hard to believe?Sounds like Ernie Bull to me.
MCChris Posted November 6, 2012 Posted November 6, 2012 ...no machine could roll and package strings as well as a human.Anyone else find that hard to believe?Sounds like Ernie Bull to me.I think the statement itself is valid. Doesn't mean they don't use machines anyway to increase efficiency and reduce costs. Ultimately, no one cares about the packaging. All anyone cares about nowadays is the price.
svl Posted November 7, 2012 Posted November 7, 2012 I'm shocked there's any human interaction (i.e. the brass wire insert, packaging, ect). I would have thought the process was totally automated. Get those damn dirty humans outta there and drop the cost another buck or two a pack!

Heck, just get children in China or Pakistan to make the strings for pennies a day.
anotherfreak Posted November 7, 2012 Posted November 7, 2012 Super cool!nice to see so many people involved, makes it worth my $5
FrettyMcgee Posted November 8, 2012 Posted November 8, 2012 D'Addario FTW, baby! . I'm a exclusive user since the 80s. Saddly, not a paid endorser. Its kinda nice to know a someone's mom wraps my strings Although lately, those damn Elixir strings are sexy feeling. And I don't have to change them every month.
unfun75 Posted November 8, 2012 Posted November 8, 2012 How many fingers are lost a month in that winding machine?
onguitar Posted November 8, 2012 Posted November 8, 2012 How many minds are lost on that winding machine? I doubt I could feed 50 wound strings before wanting to jump off a balcony.
