1981 Hamer USA Checkerboard Special

Well, decided to keep the LP, but still got to pay for the J45, so somethings got to go. I've had this one for several years and it has been nothing but stellar. I need to take current pics, but the weather is not cooperating at the moment, so below are some pics from when I first got it. Nice piece of Honduran Mahogany, with a sweet one piece veneer that is sort of quilt meets flame. When I got it, it had some sort of SD pickup in the bridge. I was able to source a period correct DiMarzio from BCR Greg in double cream. However, it was not as strong as the original DiMarzio neck pickup that came with the guitar, so I swapped them and the double cream is in the neck and the zebra in the bridge. Other than that I've polished the frets with gorgomyte and cleaned and polished the guitar itself with virtuoso cleaner. Looks great for its age, with a few dings on the edges and around a few tuner posts, as well as a very few finish checks on the back of the headstock. No breaks. Includes non-original Hamer USA hardshell case. $850 shipped and paypal. I'm only going to post it here for a few days to try and keep her in the family before posting on CL, TGP and MLP.

Nice Special for sure! I have a 1980 that I bought here with vintage BL L500s that simply ROCKS! It is is great shape as well, for a 32 yr old guitar....extremely resonant.....someone will love having your Special....

Nice late Grovers.

Also note that the saddles are the later small type (50mm approx E-E) but the bridge block is still the wider spacing (52mm approx). See those tiny gaps?

Most I have seen 1 2400 to 1 3300 are like this.

Hmm... I'm definitely sustain-block curious...

Edit: How thick is the veneer on the top? What's the neck profile like? Nut width?

How thick is the veneer on the top? - like a sheet of paper!

Like a sheet of construction paper, actually!

Yes indeed, construction paper thin it is. and yes, very, very resonant. I'm not good at describing neck profiles, but I guess you would call this one a medium C that flattens out a bit higher up the fretboard. Not pencil thin, not thick, just very comfortable. I took a few pictures as a couple of folks have inquired.

At least it's a generous portion of maple then. Not some skimpy loose-leaf veneer... ;)

G Man - Thanks for the neck (don't say "nut", don't say "nut") shots. That's some great customer service right there! I gotta go measure my Studio's neck to see how they compare...

I'll be in my bunk. ;)

And here's the worst of the dings. One on either lower bout and another inside the bass horn and a few around the tuner rings.

The color still pops a bit in the pics compared to real life, a little more browns and less red in real life, if that makes any sense. I've had some decent interest, but no one has sent money my way yet. I will continue to leave it only here for through the weekend, at which point I will post it elsewhere if it has not sold here. Would really like it to stay in the family though.

Happy New Years Eve bump.

As to the PICA ruler, for whatever reason, that's all I can find, and I don't even really know what PICAs are or where it came from?!?!? Must have been from my wife's former life as a struggling art student.
