Hamer Time Posted October 20, 2013 Posted October 20, 2013 If you only had $8000, what truck would you buy?
Hamer Time Posted October 23, 2013 Author Posted October 23, 2013 Well the bank I have been a member of for over 10 years did not approve a loan because I have no credit history. I paid off all my bills a few years ago, and have been out of debt since. Kinds sucks that to get a loan you have to be already in debt.I have no credit score because I have had no credit in the last 6 months. Yet I have years of credit, student loan, car loans, plastic etc., all paid off on time or before. So now I will have to pay crazy interest to get a loan from someone else. Anyone know a good, if there is such a thing, company that does no credit auto loans?
Hfan Posted October 23, 2013 Posted October 23, 2013 If you only had $8000, what truck would you buy?Well, the guy on the "CarPro" AM radio show says the Toyota Tundra is the one to get. They go forever, have good hauling/towing capacity and aren't too huge. Problem is, since they are so popular on the used market, they are very hard to find.I'm not familiar with the market on Tundras (or any car/truck, for that matter), but for a used Toyota in your price range you would probably have to settle for a truck with a lot of mileage. That's not a bad thing with Toyotas, especially if they have been cared for properly.Check autotrader.com and completed listings on eBay for pricing. Seriously, I don't think you can go wrong with any Toyota truck. You might, however, have to spend a bit more than one you have budgeted for nice used one.If you go the Tundra route, check for rust frame. There has been recalls where Toyota replaces the entire frame. First the Tacomas (they paid 150% of book, bought em outright, guys made out like bandits), then the Tundras and now Sequoias with total frame replacements. My 2003 Sequoia is going in this month for a free frame and associated parts. Loaner car for the duration. It sucks that the frames rusted but I'm glad they are replacing it on a 10 year old vehicle, good customer support. I don't know if you have to be the original owner to get the recall..Has been a very reliable vehicle otherwise.
Cary Posted October 23, 2013 Posted October 23, 2013 What's the gibson of PU's, in other words what overpriced junk should I not buy?Cadillac or Lincoln.......Hey - I resemble that remark! - LOL!Actually, my Navigator has been exceptional. 60,000 miles on it now, and all that's gone wrong is a coil and an axle seal, both replaced for free under the Certified Pre-Owned Warranty (no, not foolish or rich enough to spend $65K on a new one). The Navigator is a pimped-up Expedition, which is based on .... the F-150. I swore off Fords for years - HATED them. Right now I think they have some of the best American-made cars (or, more specifically, of the "American" companies, GM, Ford and Chrysler). I think they are having some trouble with diesels in certain years of the F-150 or F-250s, but you can get lemons with any manufacturer.Toyotas are generally awesome trucks - possibly the best - but you pay a big premium for them, even used. There have been certain years of the 4Runners I have lusted after, but the last couple of generations didn't do anything for me, personally. If you can find one of their pick-ups in your price range that isn't all used up, I would go for it. That said though, I wouldn't pay $7 or $8,000 for ANYTHING with 200,000 miles on it. YMMV.
Hamerica Posted October 23, 2013 Posted October 23, 2013 One thing I need is comfortable seats, I have a bad back. Ford. Definitely.I have driven lots of trucks over the past 30 decades. Dodge, Chevy and Ford. I have test drove the Nissan and Toyota.Personally, I have only owned two. 1997 Ford F150 4x42012 Ford F150 4x4My oldest son drives the 1997 and it has over 286K miles on it. It has been wrecked by him - twice. He doesn't take care of anything. It is probably the most bullet proof vehicle I have ever own. Not saying it has had its share of repairs @ 286,000 however, his previous ride was a Nissan Titan spent more time on the lift than it did on the road. (for the record I like Nissan as my wife's car is an Altima). My brother bought the Chevy Silverado in 1995 and three years later purchased a Ford F250 Diesel. Followed up with a Ford Expedition for his wife. Since then both of his boys (avid hunters and use the 4 x 4 functions weekly) have Ford F150 4x4's. My wife's co worker purchased a Nissan Titan, my son owned a Nissan Titan and both now drive the Ford F150. On the Toyota, I have neighbors who swear by the truck. Has a higher resale than Ford, Chevy or Dodge. Since we are taking about 8K here and not new trucks, I would think that would be a good option for a dependable truck. I personally don't think the Toyotas are as comfortable as a Ford. I prefer the Fords as they drive and ride like a car. Fairly easy maintenance and repair. Good luck with your search. Hamerica
Hamerica Posted October 23, 2013 Posted October 23, 2013 There's at least ten F150s currently owned by family members (I have 5 brothers and 6 sisters, all hicks and rednecks). They're well maintained, but get driven hard. All of them are late 90s or newer, from 6s to V8s to Ecoboosts, with no engine issues ever.My brothers are all gearheads and have always had pickups. Of the 100s of Ford trucks they've collectively owned over the past 40 years, none were 'lemons'. Problems? Of course. But the quality has consistently been pretty damn good.I might be a bit biased.LOL, I think me and Hamerhead have at least two things in common. USA Hamer Guitars and Ford F-150's. Hamerica
Hamerica Posted October 24, 2013 Posted October 24, 2013 FoundOnRoadDeadYeah, I hate when one of my Mustangs decide to leave me stranded - with iphones o' plenty, there are some pics out there of guys laughing and taken pics. I just smile and remember, I can still fix it and they will have to be towing into their "mechanic"....FastestOn Race DayF'n'Ol'Rebuilt Dodge

Show that you've got 1/4 or 1/2 of the purchase price and show that you're good for it.I'm a huge Dave Ramsey fan (running my first FPU at my church!) and only have my mortgage left, which will take another 6 years to pay off (going aggressively!). I can't wait until I have noe credit rating.Another alternative is to go with a 4k truck for a few months, save up the difference, and then go for what you're after.
Hamer Time Posted October 26, 2013 Author Posted October 26, 2013 Thanks for all the fis err advice.I'm thinking I might just rent something for my move and buy later. I can try to rebuild my credit again.

Anyone know a good, if there is such a thing, company that does no credit auto loans? We recently got bit by this when buying our new home. We've gone out of our way to reduce our use of credit, have paid cash for every vehicle we've bought in the last 8 years, keep zero balance on the one credit card we have, etc. When it came time to get a mortgage on our new house, we didn't qualify for the absolute best rate because we didn't use credit enough. The whole thing is a rigged game. My only consolation was that even my wife's former business partner (who sponsored a Tour de France cycling team purely as a hobby) had terrible credit scores - again, simply because he NEVER uses it.

Toadroller Posted October 28, 2013 Posted October 28, 2013 We run on cash and I can't see a scenario where I'll ever borrow money again.House will be paid off in 6 years (trust me, that's accelerated by a decade or two). Two thoughts:1) I repeat, shop around for a credit union that can underwrite a loan. If you've got a proven income and can show 1/4 to 1/2 of an 8k loan, you'll get approved, though at that point, why bother with borrowing?2) www.daveramsey.com
Hamer Time Posted October 29, 2013 Author Posted October 29, 2013 I never thought I'd want credit again either, but I want to move out of the city and some kind of vehicle would make it easier, and increase my options as far as where I move to.I don't have much for a down payment, unless I sell a guitar, anyone want a Rickenbacker 360/12?

Hamer Bass Head Posted November 2, 2013 Posted November 2, 2013 Whatever the USA version of the Toyota Hilux is, that's it hands down. If you don't believe me look up the BBC Topgear episode on YouTube.... It's insane what Clarkson did to it and he couldn't kill it. It's also the third world military's vehicle of choice for the same reason.
Duplex Dave Posted November 6, 2013 Posted November 6, 2013 I bought a one owner 96' Toyota T100 (precurser to the Tundra) about 14 years ago. It had 35,000 at the time. Best vehicle I've ever owned. I tow a 21' foot boat. I love it so much I actually started looking for another one just recently. These can be had in your price range for sure. Get the 3.4 liter V-6, make sure the timing belt is/has been changed. Go to http://www.toyotanation.com/forum/ and check out the T100 forum or Tundra and you can find a ton of info.
