oloboy Posted February 10, 2014 Posted February 10, 2014 Can anyone comment on the tonal differences of these two models?
Caddie Posted February 11, 2014 Posted February 11, 2014 Chris?! Ran out of budget for crowns? You what?! That Lean Green Machine is suffocating without crowns. Call me next time, its just so wrong to see that guitar without crowns I'll pay for them. THAT'S how strongly I feel about crowns.
Disturber Posted February 11, 2014 Posted February 11, 2014 That's the best spec'd MIII ever IMO, only the King of Fools or a promiscuous guitar freak would let that go! The Harmonic Designs and Biltoft's Virtual Vintage are on my radar too. But, but.....this one - OMG. What the heck is that? Ebony? Lollars? A guy would be a fool to let one like that go. The Harmonic Design VP90 are also a very fine set of pickups. Did someone let that one go!? I'd never do that. Such a cool MIII. It's on my want list. I have Lollars in mine. With the bridge pup close to the strings I would not say that it is polite at all, articulate, but not polite. I'd go for Wolfetones in a Korina Artist, perhaps with Alnico 5's. They rock a bit more than Lollars, sounds very much like old Gibson P90's. Chris, it's more stylish with the Victorys than Crowns.
oloboy Posted February 11, 2014 Author Posted February 11, 2014 Well, that answers that. Top shelf stuff. Green and bursts are beauts. So is that classy modded natural. Thanks for the thread, all. It really has me intrigued by the MIII. I'll start looking for that custom color to pop up someday.
Caddie Posted February 11, 2014 Posted February 11, 2014 I call dibs on that cmatthes Green Machine. I know a guy who will do the right thing n put proper crowns on it.Seriously Chris, I call dibs, before Feynman jumps on it.cheerscaddie
Ting Ho Dung Posted February 11, 2014 Posted February 11, 2014 A very nice MIII should be available in the FS section any day now. That's funny because it's probably true.
Caddie Posted February 12, 2014 Posted February 12, 2014 This has probably been asked before but at the risk of duplication of effort what's the diff underneath the top of a Monaco vs a Newport. I know, I know the body foot print shape is different. Anything else. Roundback. Belly cut. Thicker or Thinner body walls?Cheerscaddie
Pieman Posted February 12, 2014 Posted February 12, 2014 in that vein, how deep is the Monaco body? 2-3 inches? Could somebody kindly measure the depth?
coolfeel Posted February 12, 2014 Posted February 12, 2014 All I can offer is that I played a Monaco III that I helped get for another HFCer a couple of years ago and that guitar was simply amazing - strummed chords rang for days. It was almost dead mint and the guy sold it for $1100.00 I told the buyer I came real close to buying myself...lol
jaberwock Posted February 12, 2014 Posted February 12, 2014 MIII Body depth a fraction under two inches, flat back; fabulous guitar, very versatile; only things I didn't like were the PU's and PU selector switch which are both easily changed, at 1100.00 $ an amazing bargain !! Jaberwock

JaberwockExcept for the one(s?) with a carved back.
Feynman Posted February 12, 2014 Posted February 12, 2014 As far as I can tell, the only visually obvious internal differences are that the M3 has a full center block where the Newport has the shorter support for the bridge hardware. My M3 weighs in at 7lbs on the nose, and my Newports have all been in the sixes.i have attributed (rightly or wrongly) the "sound thing" that I prefer in the M3 to its 25.5" scale. Maybe it's other things too though. For my tastes, the Newport and spruce Monacos are Hamer's magical instruments. I prefer the M3 to everything I've tried, but Newports are right there with it.

Both are mahogany topped..
jaberwock Posted February 13, 2014 Posted February 13, 2014 Anyone have a picture of a carved back MIII ? is the back spruce, or maple ? Jaberwock
cmatthes Posted February 13, 2014 Posted February 13, 2014 The M3 isn't that thick - here's the M3 between a Les Paul and a Newport 12 for relativity.
Feynman Posted February 13, 2014 Posted February 13, 2014 Really - - only two inches? I always thought it was more jazz-boxed sized. How does the Monaco (Mon) humbucker version compare to the M3? Both are mahogany topped. . Nah, more LP sized. Edit: See cmatthes' post. The tops are spruce. The regular Monaco is awesome too. It certainly isn't as noisy as the P90 one. Anyone have a picture of a carved back MIII ? is the back spruce, or maple ? Jaberwock The backs are mahogany. --- These guitars are yet another testament to Hamer's confusing naming. Monaco Elite - Solid, Gibson scale Monaco Superpro - semihollow (with no f-holes), maple top, Fender scale Monaco - semihollow, spruce top, Fender scale Monaco III - semihollow, spruce top Fender scale and a mahogany top Subtone, and a bass...and custom orders
LordsoftheJungle Posted February 13, 2014 Posted February 13, 2014 The M3 isn't that thick - here's the M3 between a Les Paul and a Newport 12 for relativity. I think I spy a green Dikkers sparklecaster I've been on the fence about trying one lately. There's a gold one for $1300 on TGP though I'm tapped out at the moment.
veatch Posted February 13, 2014 Posted February 13, 2014 You guys are all assholes. I now want an M3...

That one is actually out and in my hands tonight as my world gets buried in snow!
Caddie Posted July 27, 2014 Posted July 27, 2014 The M3 isn't that thick - here's the M3 between a Les Paul and a Newport 12 for relativity. That's quite a rack ya got there Mr. Matthes! Where's the Green Monaco? Late for the photo shoot again? Its as if your rack is missing something very important…like a nipple. Cheers! caddie
