Bye Bye Love - The Cars

Question

Posted

Has anyone ever seen a youtube or other tutorial for the solo's at the end of this song. I can't find any that are any good and most of the live cars don't show much of the solo. I've got the song picked out and I am working on the solos and I am sorta close but that second section of the solo is kicking my butt.

Thanks

Thanks, those are the ones I've found. The second one really doesn't do the solo. The first does closer but the sound is pretty bad. That one got me where I am at so far.

Was just listening to them yesterday and thought, "man, I need to learn some Easton solos"...great player!!!

how soon do you need it? I might be able to pull something together, but if I can't get to it this weekend, it may have to wait a week...

Yes! He was one of those players that I felt was out of my league but I am taking a stab at it and plan to get some of the songs down. At least cover band worthy. Maybe bad coverband worthy. :)

The solo on Shake It Up is one of my favorite solos EVER! Just sounds so fun. I have always hesitated to learn it note for note because sometimes the tunes and solos lose the magic a bit when you master them. Maybe that is just me.

When EE switches from the neck to bridge pickup, chills run down my spine!

I was there from the first album. What a unique band! EEs country-tinged solos over a new wave/rock/pop format - ingenious!

THREAD HIJACK IN PROGRESS BELOW:

One of my favorite bands is Weezer, and Ric Ocasek produced their first "blue" album, their "green" album and their latest one to be released soon. I'm also seeing Weezer tonight! 2nd time in 5 months - after never having seen them before.

He's a great music/lyic mind. Is he still married to that Paulina or something like that? The supermodel that was way out of his league?

Oh well, I did some research for myself...From the interwebs - please skip if not interested!

The gist of it all; So, Ric with his weird quirky looks marries the girl voted as the the 10 most beautiful in the world right after she signs a 6 million dollar contract (not that he didn't have some money on his own). Not bad for a kid from Baltimore!!

More info if interested...

She was the second woman (after Christie Brinkley) to be featured on the swimsuit issue's front cover consecutive times (1984 and 1985). Porizkova also joined judging in America's Next Top Model in Cycles 10–12.

Elite Modeling agency head John Casablancas noticed Porizkova's physical beauty and potential, and offered her a ticket to Paris.

She quickly rose to become a top model in Paris during the early 1980s, and her fame spread to the United States when she posed in swimwear for Sports Illustrated. She appeared on the cover of the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue in 1984 and again in 1985 (her first appearance as a model in the magazine was in 1983). She appeared on the cover of Playboy magazine in August 1987 to preview her new (non-nude) swimsuit calendar. Both of her calendars in 1988 and 1989 by photographer Marco Glavianosold hundreds of thousands of copies.[citation needed]

Porizkova was chosen twice by People as one of the Fifty Most Beautiful People in the world, in 1990 and 1992. Harper's Bazaar named her one of its ten most beautiful women in 1992. American Photo in its first issue declared her to be the model of the 1980s.[citation needed] She appeared on the covers of numerous magazines around the world during the 1980s and 1990s, including Vogue, Elle, Harper's Bazaar, Self, Cosmopolitan and Glamour. She was also featured in advertising for Diet Sprite. Porizkova was the cover model for the 20th Anniversary issue of Cosmopolitan magazine in November 1985.

In 1988, Porizkova won what was then the highest-paying modeling contract: a six million dollar contract with Estée Lauder cosmetics, replacing the model Willow Bay.[citation needed] The black-and-white television and print advertising campaign won praise from critics. The Estée Lauder makeover transformed Porizkova's public image from a swimsuit model to that of European sophisticate and she remained the company's face until 1995. She soon got a new contract as the lead model for Escada. She was presented on the November 1999 Millennium cover of American Vogue as one of the "Modern Muses".[4]

On 23 August 1989, Porizkova married Ric Ocasek, lead singer for the rock band The Cars. They had first met in 1984, when she was 19 years old and he was already married, during the filming of The Cars' music video "Drive". The couple have two children.

Porizkova is the subject of the song "Friends of P" by The Rentals on their 1995 album Return of the Rentals, written by lead singer Matt Sharp.[12] She is also the subject of the song "Paulina" on No Doubt's eponymous first album and "Dear Paulina", written and performed by Luna for the film Thursday, in which she stars.

That's what a big schl*ng will get you.

Cars lost me after the first couple, but EE is a clever, unique player.

I HATE not being able to find some sheet music, or a tab, or whatnot. I've been trying to get "I'll just Pick" by The Dregs and it's hopeless.

Anyway on topic, my brother who is now a retired Westehester Co. NY policeman used to bump into Ric and Paulina occasionally always said they were just like any other married couple, just more famous. Always nice to hear I suppose.

Went to a restaurant one block up from me and saw them at a table together with, I think, their kids. This was about a month ago. She looked great  . He looked like Ric Ocasek.

Where do you live?

Not that the off topic musing is uninteresting, but nothing on the solo? Sucks not having the time to be so persistent and figure these things out. Im close but that second section is still confusing me.

I just got home - and am on my way back out for the weekend. I'll see if i can get a grip on this tonight - i should be able to shoot a quick video on Tuesday, unless work goes nuts...

Just listened to it again this morning - the second half is a little off, still - mostly in the timing more than the notes. I think he starts the bend at the 14th fret a 16th note later and there is one more note where i had a rest.

Or sumthin like that...

I can noodle on it some more on Tuesday, if you like.

Hmmm, now that I am on my ipad the link isn't showing up.

Wow - sounds like a lot of work. Keys sound *very* good, as does all of the instrumentation, actually.

I'd drop the vocal back a tad and bring the guitar solo up a tad - we lose a little bit of energy there. But based on where you're at, i'd say your ears are better than mine. :)

Good work!

Well the keys bass and drums are all the "real" band. I'm playing guitar and singing over a .mogg file. I just mute the guitar and vocal parts after I practice with them a few times. Always hard for me with the vocals. I often want to put them too low in the mix. Still lots of fun to work on these for me.

Very nice guys!
