Long-scale, spruce-top, semi-hollow with Bigsby and 3 P90-sized pickups. Many functional modifications: pickups (Lollar P90, SD MiniHB, Rio BabyBucker), wiring, and rear control cavity. Gigged regularly for a decade, so there is playing wear. $1000, will trade for Tele of equal value." No affiliation.
Feynman Posted September 10, 2014 Posted September 10, 2014 That belongs to a fine HFC member, and those are some great mods imhfo. I bet that guitar can do everything. Good price too. I'm surprised it is still for sale. Personally I think it would be a bitchin' Rising Sun candidate.
Tres Aardvarks Posted September 10, 2014 Posted September 10, 2014 If I had the scratch, I'd go for that baby (rear control cavity and all). Plus, the rear cavity would give me an excuse to rip that god forsaken boat anchor of a whammy off it
veatch Posted September 10, 2014 Posted September 10, 2014 The rear control cavity cover is just an excuse for me to stop looking at it. I have some shishkovs to fund, or I'd probably go after this one...
gorch Posted September 10, 2014 Posted September 10, 2014 The rear control cavity is necessary to replace the pickups easily. It would be a mess to do that job on the front side.
veatch Posted September 10, 2014 Posted September 10, 2014 Same as workin' on a Gibby hollow body. Tie some thread to the pots before dropping them in. Pull it out through the pup route, pull it back through. Patience is the virtue on these...
Feynman Posted September 10, 2014 Posted September 10, 2014 I don't have an M3 in front of me, but I don't think you're going to get that control plate with the pots on it out through a pickup route - I think it has to come out through the f-hole. At least, that's what I ended up thinking would have to be done when I inspected mine and decided not to touch anything. As always, I am likely to be wrong.Edited to add that in either case, of course it can be done, and it would be easy enough, but it's too much hassle for little ole me. Maybe Mike tinkered a lot before deciding on that final layout and finally got sick of the limited access. Still a way cool guitar in my book.

It's not so bad with fishing line,,, I tried using tubing once on a Monaco (like in this Gretsch video below), but it was a bad idea, you really need a big bodied guitar to allow for bends in the tubing.
Montelovesco Posted September 10, 2014 Posted September 10, 2014 Changed the PUs in my Superpro. Won't do this again. Ever.
django49 Posted September 10, 2014 Posted September 10, 2014 Looks like a pretty fair price for a player that should have a lot of versatility. Twern't for a rather fine blonde courtesy of Feynman XX (name subject to change) I would have an interest. Someone here NEEDS that one.
Monacosis Posted September 10, 2014 Posted September 10, 2014 fwiw, i do not like the stock SD p90 pick-ups - they are too hot, inarticulate, and they don't clean-up well - and changing them (maybe a coupla times) thru the f-holes is a supreme bitch.. the guitar would have had bullet holes by now instead of a rear plate.i think the MIII is a brilliant platform and maybe my favorite design by Jol - long-scale, 3 pick-ups, Bigsby, semi-hollow, spruce top, etc. but a few things got in the way of being a truly functional gigging guitar for me... so i fixed 'em and played it hard for years. that is why i bought it and i'm glad i did. i would have loved to order a custom job to my specs but that wasn't going to happen.
Monacosis Posted September 10, 2014 Posted September 10, 2014 and the rear cavity route was made using a really old Rockwell router whilst under the influence of some really expensive scotch, so that's gotta count for something.

The Gibby I did was through the f-hole. I thought I read somewhere that the mon could be done through the pup route, but I've never seen nor tried it.
dhuber Posted September 17, 2014 Posted September 17, 2014 Eventually my MIII pickups will be changed out. I have new pickups just waiting. I will install quick connects when I do it so it will be easier down the road if I want to go back.
