polara Posted June 14, 2015 Posted June 14, 2015 Rock singer-songwriter, power pop, whatever you want to call him. Great lyricist, great hooks, and gets to duet with Susanna Hoffs. He was playing an outdoor benefit show here in Atlanta, small stage but darned big turnout. He sounded really on top of things, nailed the vocals, though he doesn't do any falsetto now. He has definitely left his dreamboat sensitive good looks behind but sounds the same. The band was great, though I don't know who's playing with him. His guitarist was a BEAST, usually playing a Strat through (I think) a Deluxe Reverb but he must have had a helluva distortion pedal as his tone was fantastic. He also played some kind of boutuiquy blue single cutaway with, I swear, Filtertrons. It didn't resemble anything I have seen. Sweet played a Fano that looked like a non-reverse Firebird the whole time, through an Egnater head and Marshall 4x12. They both sounded great and the band was skin-tight. Catch them this summer if you can.
atquinn Posted June 14, 2015 Posted June 14, 2015 Matthew Sweet is awesome. I've only seen him once live, about 20 years ago (touring for 100% Fun). I was surprised by how strong his voice was live since I thought it sounded a bit delicate on the records. I'm glad he's been able to keep doing his thing all these years later.-Austin
Ted Posted June 14, 2015 Posted June 14, 2015 Have absolutely loved his Music since '91. I've seen him multiple times. He has always surrounded himself with great musicians (especially Guitarists IMHO), and I have thoroughly enjoyed every concert. He seems like a really nice person too. The Under The Covers Duet albums with Susanna Hoffs are a lot of fun, and she is very hot too, which doesn't hurt things either! My favorite albums are; "In Reverse", "100% Fun", and "Blue Sky on Mars".Also agree with Polara above that he creates Great lyricis, great hooks, and really cool textured songs(Check out "What Matters" off of In Reverse. Heck, Check out a lot of his songs for sonic pleasure). The Guitarist I've seen him Tour with the most usually plays a Gold Top Les Paul. I can't get his name out of my battered brain right now, but he is a Monster Player too.
Disturber Posted June 14, 2015 Posted June 14, 2015 Matthew Sweet. He's done some great stuff. I saw him around 1996-97, out door gig. It was great. Does anyone know if Robert Quine was with him around that time? The albums with Rorbert Quine are my favourites. Robert was such a force. I think Lloyd Cole played with him on one or two albums as well? Robert Quine, Matthew Sweet, 1992. Killer:
kenjones Posted June 14, 2015 Posted June 14, 2015 I saw him many years ago with Richard Lloyd on lead guitar and it was incredible. I was talking to the merch guy and told him that I was so happy to be able to see Lloyd because I was a Television fan. The merch guy said "The other guy (Quine) is a lot better." I respectfully disagree.

Really played well off of the Sweet one! LOL... but he played great with Hell and Reed too! Yes, but my favourite Quinn is on the early 90s Lloyd Cole albums. That guitar tone is like nothing else, and Quinns playing, together with Lloyds songs. A combination to die for. To me this is some of the most beautiful guitars ever recorded. Still gives me goose bumps. Pure beauty.
Navigator Posted June 14, 2015 Posted June 14, 2015 Thanks for the post Polara. Cool to hear Sweet still sounding so...sweet. Was this the lineup you saw?: The lead player does a nice job of capturing the vibe of his predecessors. And Disturber, great clip of Robert Quine on lead. Sweet always had lead players with tons of personality--Quine, Lloyd, et al. Here he is with Richard Lloyd on guitar: Here's a clip with Ivan Julian (Robert Quine's guitar partner in the 70's punk band the Voidoids?: Anyone know who this lead player is who's rocking the 335? (Pete Phillips, see cmatthes's post below.) Too bad he's mixed a little too low:
polara Posted June 14, 2015 Author Posted June 14, 2015 Thanks for the post Polara. Cool to hear Sweet still sounding so...sweet. Was this the lineup you saw?:Yup, that's the lineup I just saw. The guy wan't playing a /13 yesterday though.
a.bandini Posted June 14, 2015 Posted June 14, 2015 Matthew Sweet and Lloyd Cole are two of my favorites. I think of them both as intelligent pop/rock. Like other have already said: Great lyrics, hooks galore, and great melodies. Great stuff.
Disturber Posted June 14, 2015 Posted June 14, 2015 I have the Matthew Sweet 90/100 Time Capsule CD compilation. I'll check out his more recent stuff on Spotify this coming week. I am really glad to see that he is still around doing shows etc. A very fine songwriter indeed!

cmatthes Posted June 14, 2015 Posted June 14, 2015 Matthew's current touring guitarist is Dennis Taylor - monster player and a hell of a nice guy too. He is the only one of Matthew's touring guitar players who has been able to re-create the album guitar parts note for note from every period. I've seen every MS tour since "Girlfriend", and Dennis is by far my favorite.Ric Menck is still on drums, Paul Chastain has switched over from rhythm guitar to bass.Sadly, Pete Phillips (the tall, lanky "Goldtop guy") passed away a month or so ago from health complications developed from a long life of heavy drinking.

Sad to hear about Pete Phillips. Never knew about him before, but these clips show a pretty cool player. Here he is ripping it up on the aforementioned Goldtop and a 335:

I think I last saw Pete Phillips with MS in 2010. Every time I saw him play he would be bent over with his head down almost the entire show, and playing great on his Gold Top just jamming away. Loved his style, tone, and playing. It is so sad to lose a talented Artist at such a young age.
Ted Posted June 14, 2015 Posted June 14, 2015 Navigator thanks for posting the videos, especially the ones with Pete Phillips playing. All the Guitar Players I've seen Sweet play with I've liked a lot, but there was something with Phillips whole "Vibe"/Demeanor/Playing that I connected with Live. On the Rocking Solos he always approached losing control, but never did. To me he somehow was literally connected to his guitar, amp, and band by this incredible energy--Those electromagnetic waves from his brain through his fingers to his guitar through his Amp to the Band and ultimately to the Fans. RIP Pete I'll miss you.
cmatthes Posted June 15, 2015 Posted June 15, 2015 Ted - that's an excellent description of how I saw Pete and his playing with the band. I got to meet him once, briefly, at the 9:30Club here in DC. Seemed like a quiet, but intense guy.

I had no idea who he was, but really dug his energy and playing, plus I'm a sucker for 335s being used for rock. He kind of reminded me of a rawer Peter Stroud from Sheryl Crow's band. Thanks to Chris for letting us know who he was. Sad to hear of his passing though.
jwhitcomb3 Posted June 15, 2015 Posted June 15, 2015 I think Matthew Sweet played on some Lloyd Cole albums/tours, but not sure if Lloyd Cole played on any Matthew Sweet albums. Huge fan of each through the 90's, not so impressed with either's more recent output.
jwhitcomb3 Posted June 15, 2015 Posted June 15, 2015 Hey, jwhitcomb3...Don't get weird on me, babe!Sorry. I was getting bad vibes.

geoff_hartwell Posted June 16, 2015 Posted June 16, 2015 I'm also a huge fan of his one-album project with Pete Droge and Shawn Mullins, The Thorns.Great record with killer tunes and sounds produced by Brendan O'Brien.
