Gaming Consoles 2015 - Xbox One vs PS4

Our 11yo says it's finally time to upgrade the aging Wii. Looking at some of the tech sites, it seems that in the Xbox One vs PS4 arena, it all comes down to preference, and at this stage I have none.

PS4 seems to win the spec battle, with better looking titles even with cross-platform games, but Xbox looks to have an edge in smoother game play, as it can scale the resolution down when the action gets intense.

Microsoft wants the Xbox to be the center of your home entertainment experience, but we already have an AppleTV, so I'm not sure how much of that we'd utilize.

Both offer motion sensing systems with Xbox taking the lead with the Kinect, but other than some party games, which admittedly my 11yo daughter will enjoy, there's not that much "motion sensor" content for either system, although there's a bunch more for Xbox over PS4. However, on the horizon is a VR headset for PS4 which will utilize the PS4 sensor (The sensor is only $50, so that's kind of a cheap upgrade, anyway. The Kinect is $150, so if I buy an Xbox, then I'll probably get a bundle with the Kinect included).

Online? We don't let the 11yo do online multiplayer yet, but Xbox seems to have the edge in online offerings, although PS4's is less expensive. I read that Sony's site is down more, and that it can affect the ability to even play non-online content, which would be a buzzkill. I do need to read up on that more, though.

So, has anyone else fought this battle this year?

My 18 yr old nephew has both, he does IT internships. We consulted with him and he recommended the PS4, we have no complaints. You're over analyzing it, it's a game system, not a home purchase.

xBox One. That's the platform that my kids' friends play the most. They play online together. Such a different world than my old Atari 2600

I've looked at both as I've considered upgrading but haven't. (Mainly as I only play every so often and usually find there are a lot of great PS3/360 games I haven't tried. I'm currently playing Fallout 3, which is great but not for an 11 yo).

Also, for an 11 yo girl you may want to consider the controller size for her hands. The XBox controller is larger and chunkier. (I mention that as I knew a girl who loved games but hated the XBox controllers as she was small).

Besides the controller, I think the biggest factor is which exclusives your family (whoever plays) would most like, like Uncharted and Gran Turismo and Little Big Planet games for Sony and Forza and Halo games for Microsoft.

In general I'd probably opt for the PS4, but I think this holiday bundle may be the best deal right now: http://www.microsoftstore.com/store/msusa/en_US/pdp/Xbox-One-1TB-Holiday-Bundle/productID.321855100

Edit - Okay, so the link isn't working for some reason, but go to Microsoftstore.com, look for Xbox under "devices," and there's a 1TB holiday bundle with a few games. I don't know if Ori or the Rare replay are appropriate for an 11 yo, but I'm pretty certain Gears of War is not.

And this is why I'll probably go with a PS4, too.

I still play some hockey and GTA every once in a while, when I can fit it in. For ever, I was an Xbox, then Xbox 360 guy. Had the kinect, it was novel, but glitchy and annoying. I bought a PS3 and never looked back. PS Move is WAYYYY Better than Kinect or Wii. It's a fusion of the best of both.

I also found I like the PS controller much better than Xbox.

So anecdotally, as someone who casually plays, PS4 is the way to go. Unless you like Halo, then you have to go Xbox.

Ha. Yeah, I edited it after the link failed. Since I doubt you'll want your daughter playing Gears of War that bundle wouldn't be that great of a deal for you anyway.

There are few (online games) that are totally committed to the latest gen of game consoles.

What that means is that the latest gen, PS4 and X bone are being throttled till the most popular games

release them selves from PS3, 360 and go full out on the latest gen.

There are few new games out there that are exclusive to the new gen., online or console base.

The "war" between the 2 is real for market share.

Both have there perks and faults.

Microsoft was built on software, computer systems, computers.

Sony was built on the walkman, and then on to personal entertainment. The Gameboy/ playstation div. grew sony to what it is today.

Fender / Gibson.

I am a confessing gamer. I still have my original PS1.(as well with nintendo series, game cube, WII, etc.)

We are a Playstation Family, so I am bias.

I have had one hicup with my original 1st gen PS4. and sony took care of it NP.

The PS4 is a very nice piece of entertainment. Solid.

PS4 here as of two weeks ago, via a very nice holiday sale Vonnie espied somewhere online. Enjoying it even more than the PS3, which I had no issues with at all for a few years leading up to now.

Between the PS4, the new and big ass Samsung UHD 4K Smart TV that's the size of a drive-in theater and the new Bose Cinemate home theater sound system, I am one badass gaming fuckbucket right now.

Thanks y'all. I think I'm stopping by Best Buy on the way home and picking up a PS4 with Star Wars Battlefront, which I hear is a great game.

That's funny! We still have every generation Nintendo, a Gameboy, and a PS1. I got an Atari off Ebay probably 10 years ago. Some fun old games on that.

Dammit. Now I wanna drag that stuff out and hook it up.

FYI, my PS4 came with a Nathan Drake "Unchartered" trilogy that's pretty fun, interesting storylines (Indiana Jones'esque treasure hunter themes) and I'd grade as appropriate/suitable content-wise for an 11-year old. And it's three full games on one disc.

That's good to know if they don't have Battlefront in stock, thanks!
