Wasn't Nathan just raving about how much he loves this Virt? This is like the fifth time this one is being flipped. GLWTS.
Nathan of Brainfertilizer Fame Posted June 2, 2016 Posted June 2, 2016 It's still (always) a great guitar, but I rarely play it because I always reach for guitars I'm not afraid to ding. I'm really serious about trying to reduce, so anything that doesn't get regular playing time is up for sale, including a very nice Eclipse.

DBraz Posted June 4, 2016 Posted June 4, 2016 I would suspect that there is a possibility that original case was broken and replaced in favour of a smaller one at some point to save on shipping costs? The original Virt cases are quite large. A fair bit bigger than a Cali case for example.

No I think alot of people are stuck in their traditional ways... they say a lot of negative things like... there's only one pickup, why do you need so many frets? & blah blah blah blah... personally I think they're really cool, & coupled together with the awesome craftsmanship of Hamer... just my 2 cents...

Lots of guitars are selling for below my expected price, and I've picked up a few for insanely low prices. We may be headed into another recession.

But it all comes down to the buyer and seller reaching a mutually agreed-upon price. So even some niche guitars can sell for a better-than-normal price if the buyer wants it badly enough. But I've been in discussion with other guitar churners like me, and I'm not the only one who has noticed guitar prices slumping. When you combine it with the really bad May jobs report and the fact that more people are out of the labor force than ever before in our history, I think there is support for the notion of an overall decline in the national economy, and that decline having an impact on the guitar market as a whole...even if some segments are still doing well.

We may be headed into another recession. it's not just guitars Nathan, I sold a few mountain bike frames on eBay lately and lost my ass on them!.. maybe we are going into another recession... "at least in people's minds" & well now that I think about it, those mountain bike frames were high quality niche frames that average Joe's wouldn't appreciate & that's probably why they didn't sell as high as I would have liked...

It wasn't that long ago that Virts were going for a LOT more than this. The potential for a recession argument is valid as the trend in retail sales has been somewhat supported by credit. At least in the UK. I hope the doom predictions are wrong. Nathan, the colour was beautiful in my opinion too. I have just wondered why this Virt has been sold so many times.
cmatthes Posted June 11, 2016 Posted June 11, 2016 Virts were selling for double that (or more) before 2008. Buying habits definitely changed, and that seems to have been a permanent thing, since very little has recovered since then (4Digit Standards are a notable exception).

For me, it was a combination of many things: 1) It was too cool, and in too good condition, to risk playing 2) I don't gig, nor really write much music, so there really wasn't much call to use, or to learn how to use, the upper register 3) I'm learning how good two-point locking trems are. Yeah, I know I'm decades behind the power curve, but my early encounters with trems were *none* stayed in tune. Then I found a good double-locking and learned to trust (and also how to set up, which may have been equally important) a quality double-locking system. Then I hesitantly got into non-locking trems like Wilkinson and PRS, and now I trust the ones I have. They are so much easier to work with in so many ways than double-locking, and stay in tune with the amount/style of whammy I use, so I'm in the process of getting rid of almost all my double-locking guitars. Including some of my favorite/cherished higher-end Yamahas. I think I'm going to keep 2 Diablos, a Guild, and the Murkat Bengal. I just don't want to play a Floyd 4) I like to switch from guitar to guitar. I like to use multiple tones per guitar in one song. The Virt has one tone. It is a *very* good tone, but just one. So even from a sonic perspective, I probably wasn't going to reach for it often. 5) I care less about rarity than I used to. I'm figuring out that I'd rather have a huge playing stable than a mix of collectibles and playables. These reasons are, at most, perpendicular to the actual quality/coolness/attributes of the Virt itself.
