raymund Posted February 25, 2006 Posted February 25, 2006 Had an vintage Marshall 1959 100 W and sold it for only USD 300,- in the 70ies On the other hand the amp sounded only good at ear deafening volume. Found a Mesa Boogie Studio 22 in the 80ies and never changed or looked back

The only Marshall I owned that I really liked was a JTM-45 Reissue and other than the old Plexis, which I think is/was the pinnacle of Marshall tone, I prefer Boogies . All that being said I still prefer Fender BF amps and LOVE the Brownface Deluxe.

wgarces Posted February 26, 2006 Posted February 26, 2006 had my 1st band rehearsal w/ this mesa studio 22(usually a combo, but this one was mounted in mesa's rack kit). ran it thru a 1x12 weber alnico cab. i like the features (EL84's, reverb, 5 band EQ). this has a lot more clean headroom than the other EL84 amps i've owned (fender pro jr, ampeg jet II), which is what i need for our schitzo music (jazz/funk/ska/occasional metal riffs). however, when we record, i'm gonna overdub any powerchords/metal riffs w/ this; bumbox (pronounced "boombox") lead one (1w marshall clone), thru a 1x12 vintage 30 cab; great marshall-esque grind w/o blowing yer ears out. i love it. its actually counter-productive for my home practice, because instead of practicing guitar i just crush sabs riffs and open powerchords thru it, ha. edit: as for the whole "mesa vs marshall" debate, i gotta go w/ marshall for hard rawk tones, mesa for everything else, of course YMMV. Hey Brooks, What's up bro? How do you like the Bumbox? I've got a Bumbox FuzzWuzz which is also a one-watt amp but it's based loosely on a Big Muff circuit. It sounds killer with a booster in front and I use it through a 2x12 cab with G'backs. I tried V30's in the 2x12 cab and the G'backs sounded way better. Have you tried G'backs?

I owned a mesa dc-5, just not for me I thought is sounded cold almost solid state sounding. Bought a dc-3 mesa and it rocks! very warm cleans and mega gain with great stuff between. Note: This is only applicable for today, as my mind may change tomorrow.
Mindseyes Posted January 20, 2008 Posted January 20, 2008 In my last band it was almost like my two guitar players were trying to kill their rectos..........one of them droped his off his shoulder while loading in (a good 5' fall) pluged it in rocked out!The other guy had his 4-12 cab with head on top fall over without the mesa missing a beat. The same guy has a 70's Marshall 100w Super lead that will not run right for more than a month at a time and he has babyed that amp like you would a new born.I have a Nomad 55 that i fall more in love with every time i play it, its a hard amp to dial in but once you wrap your head around its controls its great for me!I would like to get me a Marshall type amp one day........Anyone have or played a Fargen Mini Plex MKII with power scaling?I'm really diging the few clips i've heard of it.....

I used a Marshall Mosfet 100 Wattfor a long time, but it ain't no tube amp.My Single Rectifier just makes me hard every time I plug into it. It gets good cleans, the Modern settinghas brutal gain, and all points in between.But I'd still like get a Marshall JTM-45, just for giggles.

Craig S Posted January 21, 2008 Posted January 21, 2008 I think Mesa's are better made overall but I never met one I really liked... So I guess that put's me in the Marshall camp.. Mesa's always sound flat and cold to me but I've never played one in a band situation. I suspect all those mids really cut in a band mix.. I remember a Jerry Donahue comment about rigs and how his sounded by itself vs. with the band.
bubs_42 Posted January 21, 2008 Posted January 21, 2008 Ok, I tried to get myself to sell the Black Studio with P90's that I just bought, but I was digging through my Cd's and pulled out "The Best of Montrose" and "Humble Pie's Greatest Hits" went to the closet and chose that guitar for some jamming and BAMMMM. That P90 guitar through the Tremoverb was instant. I had it going through the Orange Channel and could not believe how rich it was. O'well I guess another purchase will have to wait. It will not be a Marshall...

I have no use for the Boogie sound but I do have a use for the modern Boogie functionality, and my Boogie can get close enough to a Marshall sound to win the day. If Marshall ever made a Plexi-sounding amp with all the most useful Boogie features - two channels with a master for each, volume boost, channel-assignable reverb, 50/100 watt operation, low voltage option - I'd be on it in a heartbeat.

lesterpaul Posted January 21, 2008 Posted January 21, 2008 have owned both-had a special 74 marsh 50 watt head...I like a little more power/gain, so I am a Boogie man..but I dig the old marshalls as well-I say own both! a slew of boog love-a mk 1 and 3 2 C+ boogs(thanks to my buddy Joey B.)
