woodpile Posted March 23, 2005 Posted March 23, 2005 I'm looking for a different OD/Dist pedal. Anybody tried the 3 rats (vintage, rat2 and turbo rat)? I'm thinking the vintage rat might be good.
pesocaster Posted March 23, 2005 Posted March 23, 2005 I have a "real"vintage and a turbo..... can't remember the last time I actually plugged them in.... Not bad sounding at all .... just have no use for them at the moment....But if you are looking for a great pedal... the Ibanez Tk-999 kicks ass IMO.... or one of the original Tube Drivers ....
virtual Posted March 23, 2005 Posted March 23, 2005 I have a hamster and 3 cats. Prefer amp distortion.
Jeff R Posted March 23, 2005 Posted March 23, 2005 When I had my pet python, I had rats every few weeks...but not for long.
silentman Posted March 23, 2005 Posted March 23, 2005 Hey Jeff, I know you're a fan of squirrel, but you interested in a mouse I caught in my kitchen yesterday?
Jimbilly Posted March 23, 2005 Posted March 23, 2005 My reissue Rat sounds better to me than I remember my '80s Rat sounding, but I still prefer a ts9 or a tubeworks tubedriver (like Peso said). How much/what kind of dist/od are you looking for? What are you currently using? Also look at the tech21 products, they make some neat OD pedals.
Rockola Posted March 23, 2005 Posted March 23, 2005 I have a 'real' one too. They're kinda like the Honda Accord of distortion pedals; you might do better but nobody will hate you for recommending them. Does a good enough job for a home player like moi. Hey, if it works for Scofield.... I actually thought they eclipsed the Ibanez TS for the baseline pedal for a while during the late 80's-early 90's. Steve
Jeff R Posted March 23, 2005 Posted March 23, 2005 Hey Jeff, I know you're a fan of squirrel, but you interested in a mouse I caught in my kitchen yesterday? Nah, they give me bad gas and the drumsticks are too tiny.
ZR Posted March 23, 2005 Posted March 23, 2005 I have a RAT 2. It's been modified by Robert Keeley into a 3-way RAT. Clean boost, RAT 2 and Super Rat. I like it! Stock, it was still nice too. I use the distortion low and the volume high for more of a clean boost overall. Nice to know though that if you ever need an outright distortion pedal (like into a clean amp) it will do that as well - in spades!!The RAT 2 is nearly indestructible. Plus, the graphics glow in the dark! What more could you want? Keeley changes the red LED in the A of RAT to blue so you know it sounds good! ; )
straightblues Posted March 23, 2005 Posted March 23, 2005 I recently acquired a Maxon ROD-881. It is kind of a modern version of the Tube King. However, this one has two separate channels - Overdrive and Distotion, plus a boost. I has a 12ax7 tube in it. It ain't cheap, around $275 but it is the last dirt pedal I will ever own. It does everything so well. Check out the Maxon site for sound clips.
LittleC Posted March 23, 2005 Posted March 23, 2005 Yeah, I have what we are referring to as a 'real' Rat (from the 80s). Anyway, I like it okay. It's certainly NOT and overdrive, but it is what I would describe as compressed distortion with a variable tone control.
madhatter Posted March 23, 2005 Posted March 23, 2005 I've never used a rat but I recently picked up a Super Charged Overdrive pedal by Catalinbread which some have compared to rats. It is more distortion than overdrive and if your looking for something different its worth a look.Super Charged Overdrive
bobbymack Posted March 23, 2005 Posted March 23, 2005 I've had a Rat 2 on my board for the last 2 or 3 years, great for dirty boosted lead tones. It is a distortion pedal rather than a tubescreamer type OD pedal. I also have a Tim pedal at the end of my chain for clean / slightly overdriven boost... I think the Rat 2 is a great pedal, though I did have one without the LED in the "A" that did not sound as good. Actually I think HHB turned me on to it a long time back (a few boards ago)...his settings were Distortion 10 o'clock, Filter at 2 or 3 o'clock, and Volume to taste. Sounds really good imho. Jeff Beck likes his too.
Brewmaster Posted March 23, 2005 Posted March 23, 2005 I had a Keeley Modded Rat which was nice as it had a lot of different tones available as described in an earlier post. Look at the Emma ReezaFRATzitz. It is more of a distortion pedal than a OD although at low gain you do get a nice singing OD. At higher gain the tone gets a grittiness/ hairyness that is unique. I have had it for over three months, which is unusual for me, but it is different than any other pedal I have tried that is why I have held onto it. I have it in line with my Keeley modded TS-9 which is still the king of OD IMHO. I also have a Tech 21 Double Drive that I have held onto for quite sometime. Tech 21 stuff in general is also very good. There are a lot of good choices out there.
jettster Posted March 24, 2005 Posted March 24, 2005 I couldn't decide what to go with so, I bought this a few weeks ago. http://www.digitech.com/products/DF7/DF7.htmSo far it's actually been pretty cool. I already liked the tone that I was getting from the amp but, with this I can get a little more dirt without changing the tone much at all.
hardheartedbill Posted March 24, 2005 Posted March 24, 2005 Love the Rats! I have a vinatge and a RAT II, I use the RAT II on my pedalboard and leave the vintage at home. I think the RAT II is the best distortion out there, love it. The BBD CD is 100% RAT II for the dirt
Craig Posted March 24, 2005 Posted March 24, 2005 Had a turbo rat for years until I realized it sounded like my Marshall. The rat left soon after, and I would just plug straight in. Sold that Marshall about a year ago, that was a great amp.......but I digress.....
woodpile Posted March 25, 2005 Author Posted March 25, 2005 The Deucetone Rat it is. I heard one yesterday through a Classic 50. Very good sounds, everything from clean OD to hot rod Marshall to Fuzz city. Also can combine or cascade two different sounds (has two pedals in same unit).http://www.procosound.com/ratindex.htm#topI won't ever put away the TS-9 but this will add some variety.
MARKVECTOR82 Posted March 26, 2005 Posted March 26, 2005 Ive had three over 25 years loved them all. But they're not great overdrives never thought of them for that. when i started playing Boogies i stopped using them but you can go direct into your recording gear w/them and they sound pretty cool. Jeff Beck did that for most of the Flash album.
kurtsstuff Posted March 26, 2005 Posted March 26, 2005 I'm not a fan of distortion pedals but...If I were to use one, the original Marshall Guvnor is the pedal I'd use...it's more like a preamp and has tone controls that actually work!
Eric Weston Posted March 26, 2005 Posted March 26, 2005 I bring a Rat 2 to every gig....I even bought a spare in case my old one craps out in the middle of a job, but that hasn't ever happened and I doubt it will- they're tough. I keep trying different distortions but I always seem to come back the Rat 2. I like the Vintage Rat also, but I get basically the same sound out of each and I NEED the led on dark stages, so it's a Rat 2 for me at gigs....that and a compressor, or an OD, or an eq, or......
