Scholz SugarCone/ Classic if you can find one,,, nice EVM handling, not quite as piercing highs and not as beamy as EVM12Ls,,, can be pricey.

The WGS12L is supposed to be pretty good too,,, I like their copies of just about everything.

I picked up an Eminence Hempdog which is marketed as a cross between the Cannabis Rex and the Legend EM12 (the Legend  is supposedly Emi's version of the EVM12L).  Although it was developed with Pete Anderson who plays Deluxe Reverbs, it doesn't actually fit into the DRRI that I own because the output transformer hits the cast frame of the speaker lol.  It sounded pretty good plugged into the DRRI, but I need to find a cabinet for it (it didn't fit into a Mesa open-back 12 cab either - the frame of the speaker runs into the reinforcing wood between the baffle and cabinet). I'm sure it will sound good if I ever manage to find a cabinet that it fits into.  It is also rather heavy (spec'd at 16 lbs).

I used a legend EM 12 8 ohm in an Earcandy Sov for a few years. Really liked it with a Boogie Mark llb 60 watt head.

If you want a flat response speaker but don't need the Wattage, contact Jeff over at East Amplification. WGS Makes him a speaker that is flat like an EV. The WGS12L is actually made with some of the old tooling that EV used. WGS Bought the tooling when EV production was moved to China.

I know it’s completely different, but I REALLY like the EV SRO...King of the alnicos!

It would be hard for me to push you away from the EM12L since I have Eminence Speakers in everything now. I don't know how that happened, but somehow it did.

I'm interested in these suggestions, too, as I'm seriously contemplating building a wide body Thiele cab to go with my little Phaez Pasadena head.  Original EVM 12Ls are out there, but damn...the cheapest I've found one in really good condition is $175 before shipping. And yes, I'm frugal... 😎

Are you in the market and are you opposed to a non-clone option?

I am in the market. I am not opposed to the real thing. I have/had a Fuchs Fat S-1, which Fuchs has described as a Delta-Pro slightly modified. I am presently leaning towards the Neo version of that speaker DELTALITE® II 2512.

I am operating in a speaker exposure vacuum here and would like to collect some collective knowledge before proceeding.

Can't say as if I have ever been disappointed from the advice given here.

Electrovoice 12L

WGS 12L

Eminence Legend 12L

Eminence 12N (neobymbolydim)

Eminence Delta Pro 12A

Eminence DELTALITE® II 2512

Eminence Hempdog

Weber Michigan

This Jensen CD12 looks interesting if a PSA-1 qualifies as a "modeling rig."

This Celestion BN12-300(8) appeared in one my searches.

Hempopotamus Loudspeakers says they build them from OEM components.

Here's a pair of Schlotz-inators for $600.

More as I come across them.

I've seen Sugarcones go for that much and lower, he's taking offers so theoretically a deal can be had... what kind of amp are you matching up with? is this going into a 2x12?

I bought the Scholz to go with my Carol Ann amp which is a Marshall/Dumble type amp,,, has the Marshall grind but a little thicker/chewier, nice for many things but I actually like the fat cleans the most.

I own & use the EVM 12L speaker that came OEM on my '92 Marshall 6101 combo amp and like the sound that I get from it. I've owned it since 1993 and it's been played on enough over the years. The highs are piercing so I dial back the treble on my crunch & lead channels to about 10 o'clock. I've also installed a Weber Beam Blocker in it as well. I'm interested in the Eminence Hemp Dog speaker designed by Pete Anderson. The hemp cone's dark tone along with the Eminence's version of the EVM 12L speaker would make an interesting sound for a guitar combo amp cab.

We had a production run of these speakers made for us, which have 2 basic changes. First...a bit earlier breakup, (I mean just a tiny bit more sag) to soften the response a bit, compared to an EVM-12L for example.

Second...I worked on the high frequency response. The EVM-12L has a very present and clear high frequency impression in cleaner and more HiFi circuit application. However, they can be a bit fast and slightly strident in response for some people (most people).

What I mean by "impression", I explain this by pointing out "the player feels the speaker". Well...we don't really, actually feel sound we hear it (except for super high sound pressures, at high volumes and high driving force, low frequency).

Our brain receives electrical impulses from the ear and extrapolates that to what guitar players refer to as "feel". Its much more complex than that but that's a reasonable explanation, I think? This is always hard...to explain "tone and feel", what it actually is and why we love some things and hate others...

Anyway...the second point in a minute. When we discuss speakers and how they sound, it's important to place the discussion with a circuit. EVM12-L speakers sound wonderful in certain circuits, good in others and horrible in many!

For example...EV-12L speakers sound and feel quite impressive in a more filtered, Higher-Fi versions of a Dumble circuit. Where the EV12L may feel less settled in a late JCM800 circuit board amp.

With that, we rounded the impression on the highs. Less sssssssssss and more liquid. The sssssssssss comes from the circuit, not the speaker...in the case for an EV-12L. The EV-12L is just really good at revealing the nature of a circuit. Suffice it to say "the end result with my version EM12, is a speaker which sits better with a gain amp like a Marshall", without making it sound unacceptable in a clean amp! The speaker sits better than a comparative EV-12L, in a Dumble, where the gain preference is preferring a warmer more pliable feel response when pushed harder with gain. However, I like the top and the slightly softer attack of my version of the EM12, versus the EV-12L

This is not to suggest this speaker doesn't sound good in clean amps and HiFi circuits...it does. Its just not so hard and direct. Again...I actually prefer it over the EV-12L in the Dumble! Sweet tone and jus the right attack. Warm, with liquid but present highs.

Its a great speaker!

I have a few of these left and I also had 16ohm versions made...which are not available in an "off the shelf EM12".

Mark.

Back when I built those monitor wedges, EV was still making the EVM12L and published specs for them.  When compared to Emi EM12, the response curves were very similar and the rated sensitivity was something like 1 db different.  Placed in identical enclosures, I was damned if I could hear a difference.

WGS has them on sale RIGHT NOW.
