bruce919 Posted March 1, 2006 Posted March 1, 2006 Has any one played around with one of these amps? How is the Distortion?Reverb?is it bright sounding or mid-range?any input would be great.
SteveC Posted March 1, 2006 Posted March 1, 2006 I've had one for a few years. The distortion is what you'd expect from EL84's - gritty, good classic-rock sound, but not over-the-top.The reverb is a short-tank Accutronics - it's very natural sounding.I don't think the amp is overly bright sounding - the EQ controls work pretty well. For the $$, I think it's a good value. Carvin will let you try one for 10 days & return it if you don't like it...
tafkathundernotes Posted March 1, 2006 Posted March 1, 2006 You can find a few good deals on these on E-bay right now too. They are very well constructed amps; far better than a comparable Peavey, for example. The PCB's are thicker, the hardware is sturdier, and the construction is very good. It all comes down to selection of components as far as tone goes. I have the Vintage 112 (50 watt) that I've modified to improve the sound. It's a great amp now. I say go for it!
Brooks Posted March 1, 2006 Posted March 1, 2006 i like the look/features of thos v16's too. buy one and report back to us.
Guest galejt Posted March 1, 2006 Posted March 1, 2006 As Duffman says, "Oooo yeah!" Carvin Vintage 16 amp w/ reverb and MAJOR UPGRADES Brand New - includes Weber Blue Dog and NOS tubes 1 day left!
BubbaVO Posted February 21, 2011 Posted February 21, 2011 Any love for these? Or are there better options out there? I think they're listing for $390.

bubs_42 Posted February 21, 2011 Posted February 21, 2011 I've been thinking about the 16 myself. Pretty damn good price and the guys above have made some good points.
gi_zuk Posted February 21, 2011 Posted February 21, 2011 I have no direct experience with the Vin16, but I have an older Vintage 33 model (33 watts) and a Bel-Air 50-watt 2x12 combo. The Carvin Vintage series is a great line of amps! Not a whole lot of distortion-think AC/DC and classic hard rock like Kiss, Thin Lizzy, and early Priest.I have removed the clipping diodes out of both amps so they should sound more or less like the Vin16-just more power. I use my Bel-Air coupled with a closed back, Vin 30 2x12 (Vai-Carvin Legacy) speaker cab at all my gigs now. It freakin' rocks!I played this amp setup this past Friday at a gig here in Tulsa. I used a Flying V loaded with TV Jones P90s-awesome hard rock tones and it cleans up/blusey when you roll back the volume on the guitar.I've had the Vin 33 for 15 years and the Bel-Air for nearly 10. All they've really needed are tube changes and the clipping diode removal.

tbonesullivan Posted February 21, 2011 Posted February 21, 2011 I have one. Great little jamming amp. The cabinet is a bit small for a 1x12 combo, but if you hook it up to an external enclosure it's got some balls. It has only 2 gain stages on it, so it probably doesn't have quite as much balls overdrive wise. I've never tried the other vintage series amps in their stock or modded forms. The V16 can at times get a bit bright. Mine came stock with a Vintage 30 celestion in it, and it just had too much in terms of mids, so I swapped it out for a Eminence Blue Tick Hound (discontinued). I haven't played with the tubes much But I think soon I'm going to swap out the stock GT Sovtek EL84's in favor of some JJs.The triode/pentode switch is a really nice feature that allows you to get some lower volume cranked tones. I haven't really tried it with a booster much.

My favorite small amp I've ever had was the SCXD (Brooks and Harry65 steered me right). For low volume home practice, it simply sounds fantastic, with a lot of nice features in a small package. The blackface clean preset is almost unreal to me. I just picked this one up for $200 last week, and though simple, it sounds great too: Sorry to veer off track. Oh, P.S., the Super Champ XD now comes in a cool new outfit:
bruce919 Posted February 21, 2011 Author Posted February 21, 2011 Look at the date I posted that originally. I had one for a while & now it long gone. It was an OK amp.

God help me, but... Hey Harry- I may be in the market for a 15 watt Fendery thang... How does the SCXD (with replaced Ragin Cajun) compare to the 65PRRI? GH hey geoff , here's the deal , the 65prri has basically one sound , a great one but still one sound , the xd has that 65prrri sound built in and about 5 or 6 other usable sounds , the blackface models are amazing, they really are , loud enough to get over any drummer unless your doing anthrax and king diamond covers (btw abigail and them are incredible records) , with a speaker upgrade you can do any gig , run it thru a 2x12 or 4x12 and it gets even better , because it has an all tube power section you can crank it and it gets even better , bigger stages are what monitors are for , we did a huge country show last year in front of 20.000 , when i got offstage jake owens guita player walked over and was like "dig your tone bro , what ya using" , i pointed to my little 28 pound super champ xd , look on his face was priceless , think he was using matchless if i remember right , bottomline is you won't be dissapointed, i just can't believe fender hasn't caught on and started charging double for these things , one other thing , went into wolfe guitars here in south florida two weeks ago to try a marsh princeton clone , $1200 price tag , i keep thinkin how can i be using a $200 amp , anyway i had my xd in the back of my van and graham the salesman said to bring it in and a/b them , big mistake on his part , he didn't say anything but his look said it all , anyway i saved my $1200 and bought a new guitar................. edited to add , takes pedals great bubba , i'm not a huge effects guy but i use a compressor, tube screamer and delay with mine and it sounds peachy keen............

Feynman Posted February 22, 2011 Posted February 22, 2011 BubbaVO, unless things have changed, you and I share similar needs and wants. The search for good tone at low volumes is an agonizing one that I have spent way too much money on, thinking I needed the good stuff. In truth, the little Chinese Vox I have now, and the Super Champ XD before it, are PERFECT. On a good day you can get either for $200 on Craigslist or eBay. Plug in an effects gizmo of your choice and the world is yours. When I'm being completely forthright with myself, I need nothing more than this stuff. My new rig (loaner geetar until the Newport arrives): The Super Champ XD is a great amp, and better than the Vox, but the Vox was cheap and I needed to satisfy my curiosity. It sounds surprisingly full with the 12" cab, and at the 1/4W setting still delivers what I think is very satisfying tone at volume that keeps my sleeping kids sleeping. I predict you'll love your Super Champ XD. By the way, I never swapped the original speaker, and it was great for me. You might be happy with stock unless you can actually turn your amp up. If you've moved up to gigging (bastard!), I think Harry65 is a prime example of how you still don't need anything more (except his mad guitar skills). Tell us how you do...

The seller answered my questions and seems like a nice guy. Gone are the days of the blind e-bay bids (at least for me). This should prove interesting. The Maverick and the TM60 have been more amp than I ever needed. I think this will be an interesting addition. Will let you know .... the kicker is I know myself...new tubes will end up in there and so will that speaker...I never can leave well enough along. And yes...we're still in the same boat. No new kids for me - 5 is plenty. And the wife hasn't kicked me out of the house. Status quo.
specialk Posted February 22, 2011 Posted February 22, 2011 I just picked this one up for $200 last week, and though simple, it sounds great too: Great score on the Vox, Mitch! Congrats. I have the combo version and love it. I think that amp, paired with the Hamer you have coming, are gonna sound super! And the dog rocks, too.
Feynman Posted February 22, 2011 Posted February 22, 2011 I have the combo version and love it. 'Twas your happiness with yours that had me curious. I was going to go for the combo but this popped up at just the right time. I like it a lot.
