PSA : Reverb=Manipulation-No Love

When Reveb started the premise was a forum built by musicians for musicians. Then came the typical big selloff to a large corporate entity Etsy , who instantly raised the fees  and has been restructuring them ever since. I have been buying a lot of pedals lately, let me paint a picture of what I have noticed is going on lately. Let's say there is a pedal listed and a vast majority have it for $150 brand new with free shipping. So I look at used listings expecting to get a deal. The vast majority all have the same thing listed used for $125 + 12 to 15 shipping. Now why would I ever buy the used pedal when I can get brand new for $10 more , free shipping ,in a box, with warranty ???? I have contacted numerous sellers about possibly getting a better deal on their used pedal . This is the response I most often get. " Well Reverb suggested I list it for $125 , that's what they are selling for !! " BS - It is my opinion Reverb is steering sales to the retailers. Why should they cater to dealing with 1000 sellers for 1000 items , when they can cater to 1 retailer selling 1000 items ???? I have gotten pretty tired of Reverb !!! What are your thoughts ???

Reverb has been corrupted by money like everything else, to the point where as a seller it's not much of a better deal than consignment anymore. As a buyer, well, you pretty much described it. Retailers probably get a professional/volume discount on their fees, too.

Is there anything stopping those people from selling their item for less than what Reverb suggests, other than their own entitlement and greed?

Reverb has gotten to be like ebay, I follow a lot of guitars to keep up with current prices and trends, but seldom buy from either site.

One thing you can conclude by reading the tea leaves: both sites seemingly shifting their focus to retailers probably means private sellers are not profitable enough and/or too much of a pain in the ass to deal with.

No, it's just their built-in excuse.

SOooo glad I never have to deal with this nonsense again.

Lack of creativity and interest in the marketplace. If you're an avid nerd, you roughly know what your junk is worth. If you're just some average dude, maybe you bought that pedal last year for $150 and never clicked with it and you don't have a clue what it's worth. When Reverb tells you $125 is fair, you think, "Wow, that pedal must be popular!" and you take their advice.

Hopefully this artificial and predictable friction will impel someone(s) to start a new venue, purer, by musicians for musicians..there is obviously a need.

I think (hope) that this is the way society in general will proceed..it is WAY too corporate

I’ve had good luck on Reverb as a buyer, my Prototype being a good example. I don’t think I’ll be selling any big-ticket items in the future (eBay, too), due to fees/tax liabilities.

I am considering trying selling on the Sweetwater used site for credit. I’m not sure how that will go.

I used to buy many guitars off Ebay..................sold some also I had really good luck with both on Ebay. That changed for the worse long ago. I have a friend that used to sell on REVERB, [No more] the original site seemed initially to be a pretty good place to buy or sell gear now both sites are crap. Ebay and REVERB =$$$$$ for those businesses nothing more. Well..................... except scammers and lots of hyperbull.

All the reverb threads got me thinking, I just sold something on Reverb. They should tell you the overall selling fee instead of having a separate selling fee and “payment processing fee” in my opinion. 😡

Edit: maybe credit card companies are to blame? I don’t really care about the taxes since we’re not supposed to owe taxes on the entire amount, just the profit.

IMO, Reverb is actually steering profits to Reverb when they suggest prices. <_<

I use Reverb, and to a lesser extent Ebay, as a market 'price guide' for buying.  If I'm jonesin' for sumpthin', I'll shop and compare.  And keep looking until I can find a better deal, often elsewhere.  Or change my sights to something else.
