gwayne Posted November 27, 2008 Posted November 27, 2008 I know I'm going to regret this. Be that as it may, I'm offering up an incredible 1997 Standard Custom. This was formerly owned by Lord Of The Thighs and briefly by Feynman. Condition is easily 9:10. The top is either flamey-quilt or quilty-flame, depending on how you view things. Awesome '59 burst finish which is mostly a pale orange with just a hint of red around the edges. Thinner neck than the current modern carve, but by no means shredder thin. Neck pickup is stock SD '59. Bridge pickup is a SD Custom 5 SH-14. Weight is exactly 9 pounds. OHSC in excellent condition. Overall an incredible guitar. I'm selling because 1) I needs the money and 2) my '95 Studio fits me better ergonomically. I truly want this to stay within the HFC membership. Price is $1400 firm, no trades sorry. Shipping will be whatever FedEx Ground charges - it should be around $50-60. Add 2% if you're using PayPal. For serious buyers who are long term HFC members, I'll work out a payment schedule. I think this is too large to ship overseas so I'll have to limit sales to USA. To contact me use the PM function or gwsmith@southernco.com.
bubs_42 Posted November 27, 2008 Posted November 27, 2008 Damn this one's been on my short list since the first time I layed my eyes on it... Good Luck and someones going to be very lucky.
Feynman Posted November 27, 2008 Posted November 27, 2008 AAAAAARGH! I was just telling myself I'd like THAT one back to try again. I tell you, these past two months have been a BAD time to be broke. :-(Grrr... Let me go look through my garage for things to sell... (though I suspect I will return from my garage to find it sold).
Joe G Posted November 27, 2008 Posted November 27, 2008 "Thinner neck than the current modern carve, but by no means shredder thin."Happy Thanksgiving all.Really beautiful guitar and a great deal!I never had a Standard. Please can anyone explain the neck carve a bit more. I have a mid 90's FM Special with the neck on the thin side, Mirage II, Eclipse, T-51 and a Daytona (both maple necks). If possible, where would you say the neck carve on this standard would be most similar to, or is it thinner or thicker than any? Thanks,Joe G.

The Standard's neck is closest to the mid-90 Studios - slightly, and I do mean slightly, thinner than the Mirage II I had. I have a Newport Pro that I ordered with the vintage carve and it is exactly like that neck. In a blind test, I don't think I could tell which is which. To me the modern carve is a "Fat D" shape and the vintage carve is a Flattened "D". I hope that makes sense.
zorrow Posted November 28, 2008 Posted November 28, 2008 WOW! And Mitch dares to say he doesn't like that!?
Feynman Posted November 28, 2008 Posted November 28, 2008 I want this guitar badly, Zorrow-man! I can get over the 59 Burst. This guitar is tormenting me.
crunchee Posted November 28, 2008 Posted November 28, 2008 Me like! If only I hadn't bought that '04 Korina Standard a couple of weeks ago...BTW, any photos of the back? Any dings, dents, damage, scratches, signs of wear, fretwear? Is the original bridge pickup included? Sorry for the questions, but I gotta kick the tires.

There are tiny, tiny finish scratches in a few places - nothing that I can photograph and nothing close to what you'd expect to find on a PLAYED 11 year-old guitar. There are no bumps or dings to the wood. The fretwear is minimal;i.e. enough that you can see it in a few places but nothing requiring any work. There are many years left on the frets. The original pickup is gone but I assure you the buyer won't want to change a thing.
veatch Posted November 28, 2008 Posted November 28, 2008 Woof! Great looking Standard. I'm sure it won't last long...
LordOfTheThighs Posted November 28, 2008 Posted November 28, 2008 A pic of Gwayne's '97 Standard, when I had the pleasure of owning it. Good luck with the sale!
santellavision Posted November 28, 2008 Posted November 28, 2008 That to me is what a Standard should look like! Wow a real beauty!
tomteriffic Posted November 28, 2008 Posted November 28, 2008 THUD!Now that I've pried my jaw off the floor, got a ballpark idea on the wieght?OH, and Duncan Custom 5's and Hamers are made for each other.
gwayne Posted November 28, 2008 Author Posted November 28, 2008 THUD!Now that I've pried my jaw off the floor, got a ballpark idea on the wieght? Tom, It's exactly 9.0 lbs on my postal scale. I would have sworn it was less - it does feel less because of how it balances.Gary
gwayne Posted November 28, 2008 Author Posted November 28, 2008 Standard is currently off the market. I'll post any updates if necessary.
zorrow Posted November 29, 2008 Posted November 29, 2008 Congratulate the lucky bastard from me, please!
