What's your favorite "lesser known" band discovery?
Brooks replied to a topic in Hamer Fan Club Messageboard
cool, i'll look for that. imo, wino shoots himself in the foot by continuing to change band names when he's the main vocalist/songwriter. can you imagine if, say, dave mustaine changed band names every time his lineup shifted? ps- +1 on dada, saw 'em open for sting. -

the obsessed/spirit caravan - 2 heavy trios from the 90's, both fronted by scott "wino" weinrich (gtr/vocals/tunes). well known in the stoner rock/doom scene. very sabbathy heavy w/ distinctive melodic vocals. not for everyone, but i dig them. like alot of bands, their stuff is hit or miss, but at least 2 albums are classics for me, "the church within" & "jug fulla sun". wino went on to less inspired stuff w/ place of skulls and hidden hand. t.j. kirk - neo jazz supergroup w/ charlie hunter, will bernard, john schott, & scott amendola. they juxtapose the music of james brown, thelonious monk, and roland kirk (hence the name). funky, jazzy stuff w/ a sense of humor. never got as popular in the jazz scene as MMW, charlie hunter, or recent scofield releases, but should have. my fave disc is "if four was one". also, will bernards solo stuff is in the same vien and is very good, check out "motherbug" and "party hats". going back to the late 70's/early 80's, there was a band called lightning, from the dallas area, who were very good live, my pal played drums for them the last few years. their guitarist rocky athas has been w/ black oak arkansas for the last ~20 years. -
time to fire up that duo project! one asshole is better than 2-4 assholes, ha.

yep! bobs is exactly right in his view and attitude on this matter, imho. dave & i have enough classic rawk and newer stuff (sublime, snoop dogg, jack johnson) to taylor the set to the crowd. yep. hell, there's tunes we do in the original band that i don't wanna play! yep. my point earlier was that *I* would feel awkward at my age playing hard rawk gigs (unless the tounge is set firmly in cheek). i have seen older guys posturing as young rawkers at their gigs, to me its funny in a sad kinda way, but if *YOU* don't feel goofy 20 years & 20 pounds too late being onstage wearing leather and singing about teen angst, be my guest.

if a 19 yearold john lennon could time travel, he'd kick your ass if you'd say that to his face

i agree. i still like heavy music; i listen to it, i blast it thru my amp at home. but, i just don't want to gig those types of places anymore. whenever i see a buncha unknown 40 year olds seriously playing heavy music, it just looks pathetic IMHO. i don't even like blues or country (except maybe some willie or cash). this is why i like playing a buncha acoustic gigs, with a few neo jazz original shows a year sprinkled in. besides being easier than a full band, i don't feel silly up there at my age.

i agree about the high price of shows, but theres so few bands i like that still tour that i go see 'em when i can (usually every 2 years someone worth seeing comes around, last time was maiden at ozzfest, drove to DC to see that). i'm pumped about VH. i don't mind sammy as much as i hate the tunes they did w/ him, the DLR setlist is friggin' killer!! -

i gots tix sept 29, greensboro nc (show #2!!!) -
i agree that their other albums don't match the quality of "fire down under" as far as tunes go. as for recording time, sometimes it takes a while to nail the right tones and takes. i was reading the linear notes, and they make mention of "a 3 year struggle to release this album", but i think they're referring to record company woes, not studio time.

i've been revisiting my teen era in the last few years, buying lotsa stuff on remastered cd that i used to have on vinyl or cassette (sabs box set, manowar, kiss alive, maiden, priest, motorhead, chris poland, scorps tokyo tapes, a buncha VH, etc). i haven't heard the entire fire down under album since the mid 80's, i forgot what a great album it is! i'm listening to it cranked right now. hardly a bad tune on it, great singing and LP/marshall goodness. SWORDS!! AND TEQUILLA!!! CARRY ME THRU THE NIGHT!!! i'm in a great mood; this morning i got the 2nd chance on matchful's neck repair goldtop duotone, plus i just got done giving the high hard one too the wife! think i'll fix me a crown on the rocks!!! CHEERS HFC!!!!

NEED TO SELL
Brooks replied to Stokesdead's topic in For Sale - Wanted to Buy - PIF - eBay & Other PSAs
i sold chris this guitar, it is a kickass sounding and playing rawk machine of a beater. the only better deal than a used special is a used special w/ a well repaired headstock crack. have no fear, you won't be disapointed. here's a pic that shows the sunburst more accurately; -

i heard a mercyful fate tune for the 1st time (for that specific tune) on xm radio today. it's one of the songs metallica covered in their MF medley ("i was born in a cemetary", haha). their cover is almost exactly the same except for hetfields vocals are way cooler than king diamonds. that cool sliding riff is stuck in my head, along w/ the goofy lyrics ("i'll be the 1st to watch your funeral, and i'll be the last to leeeeeeaaavvvveeeeeeee", haha). -
i prefer the flat top & 3 holes. the flat spruce top emulates an acoustic. the 3 holes is a modern look that is unique to duotones; most everybody uses f holes.
