2011 HFC Year In Review... Best Posts, Best Buys, etc.
velorush replied to Hamerhack's topic in Hamer Fan Club Messageboard
I FINALLY BOUGHT A BASS! I FINALLY FOUND A HAMER WITH A NECK I CAN GET ALONG WITH! I let go of the "cold dead fingers" Strat ... and I haven't noticed it... 2012: I'm going to find somebody, somewhere, that likes to play music and we're going to have some fun! -
Gibson experts, I got a trade offer, Help
velorush replied to Scottcrud's question in Ask the HFC Experts
FWIW, I agree with this additional qualification: The RD is definitely one of those love it or hate it models (I happen to have been in absolute love with them since I first saw one hanging in Cecil's Bandstand back in the '70's), BUT the reissue has some strikes against it that cause even the RD purists to sneer, most notably the shorter (than original) 24-3/4" scale length - the original was 25-1/2 like a Strat. I think your SG is a much more marketable guitar (notice I didn't say which was better - a matter of opinion). Just my two cents, I'm no expert, YMMV, etc. Edited to add a link to a blogged rundown of the differences. -
Delusions of grandeur, caught on video

What'd I miss? I got bored and my ADD kicked in at... well, I don't remember because I was distracted, but it was definitely less than a minute. From what I can tell, it's probably just as well. -

The guys on the Duncan forum for the most part agree with your choice of 500k pots on the Quarter Pounders. Sounds like a plan! Amazing how much better it looks! -
The death bell toll's for even more wood murder
velorush replied to Jem's question in Ask the HFC Experts
Stunning! Very nice work. -
The rumors of my death have been greatly exaggerated. I've never left you. Much like a whisper on a breeze or the smell of burnt toast. But more like the burnt toast thing. We were assured you were lurking. Great to have you back topside, less so the now tattooed sig pic of Poe's posterior.

There are two, actually. If you click on the time under the name of the last user who posted on a thread (in the case of this thread, it said "Today, 08:30 AM" under your name when I visited), it will bring you to the last post in a given thread. If you click on the"bullet point" to the left of a thread, it will bring you to the last unread post. ETA: Great work, Ted! KIZ IS BACK! (Did I miss the news of his return?)

Where to find? A button popped up when I pulled up the HFC in Safari. The app is actually for all boards hosted in this group (IP.Board). Downloading and clicking the app leads through a sign in page where it asks you which board, your user name and password. Certainly, no app is required, but the app does size the page view into a more suitable format for the phone's screen. Oh, and Ted, thanks for all you do!

Black humbuckers with unmarked baseplates
velorush replied to GusS's topic in Hamer Fan Club Messageboard
Ah, I'm sorry GusS, you're right. I had my feet out of order! ZMB does a bang up job covering it in the second post on this page. -
Black humbuckers with unmarked baseplates
velorush replied to GusS's topic in Hamer Fan Club Messageboard
Wouldn't square feet with no model designation stamped on the underside place them in the early to mid 80's? ZMB will know! Edited to add: the Super Distortion with four-conductor wiring was called the "Dual Sound" humbucker (AFAIK). -
Just one "desert island" instrument...
velorush replied to Willie G. Moseley's topic in Hamer Fan Club Messageboard
My daughter's Fender Squier Affinity Telecaster (after a quick fret dress) would certainly qualify for me. I'd even have enough change left over for some better pickups (though the original ceramics don't sound terrible) or a decent little practice amp. -
need a compressor - MXR Dyna Comp?
velorush replied to tobereeno's topic in Hamer Fan Club Messageboard
I've got a CMATMODS Deluxe Signa Comp compressor. They're inexpensive as hand-wired compressors go. It's basically a Ross clone with some nice refinements. The 'Deluxe' part is the separate Attack knob. I've got no gigs or prospects of gigs - I'd be glad to ship it to you if you'd like to try it out. If you're not in a hurry, I could bring it when I eventually get up to see Jay (hopefully next month). Otherwise, I've heard great things about the Ego (it seems well on its way to becoming the new 'in' thing in Nashville as far as I can tell - a demo I was watching last night that seems pretty straight forward). When I was shopping for a compressor, the Demeter Ernie mentioned was highly regarded, along with the two- and four-knob Keeleys and the Barber. The demos on the Diamond Jay mentioned were fantastic but it was way over my budget (as I was just trying to get my feet wet). -

Note to self: Large Moving Truck, Ski Mask, Peanut Butter/Raw Burger, female Doberman in heat. Fixed! -
Agreed. I started looking into heavier strings when going from Fender scale to Hamers, and missing the snap in the strings. I drive the pick hard, and don't like a sloppy response. I particularly like the Thomistik-Infeld Power-Brights .011 .015 .019 .032 .045 .053 (Heavy Bottom) on my Eclipses.Regarding the discussion of even/odd harmonics, I like to drive the string with a strong fundamental, and let the my amp provide the harmonic distortion. Different amps or amp models will let you choose the harmonics you want to bring out. If excess harmonics are there at the input, the output ends up sounding like mush. Same boat here. I just put GHS Boomers Mediums (.11 - .50) on my Gibson. I've been playing Strats so much that the Gibson felt mushy. The Mediums are much better and seem to have close to the same string tension, maybe a bit more. I may end up trying out one of those 0.105 sets to tweak it a bit more. The Gibson has a trapeze, so while the scale length is shorter, the string length isn't that much shorter. One odd thing about the GHS Mediums, they go .11 .15 .18 .26 .36 .50. The Boomers Lights I was using were .10 .13 .17 .26 .36 .46 - so the A and D strings are the same gauge as I was playing. They feel a little weird in this group of heavier strings.

Thanks everyone! I started the day by making a cheap Harmony guitar fairly playable [a coworker had picked one up for his son to learn on - had to use a huge neck shim!], followed by trying to do myself in with a horrendously hard bike ride, then spent the evening recovering [i.e., eating everything in sight]. It was a great day.

For Sale

So, just to clarify, this is THE Pizza Day Standard, of HFC fame? I've heard about it, read about it, but I'm one of the few who hasn't owned it. Other than the PD finish issues, I've heard nothing but great things about it! -
NAMM, July weekend of the 23rd. Gibson Summer Jam
velorush replied to murkat's topic in Hamer Fan Club Messageboard
The one time the HFC has something within a couple of hours and I leave town on vacation three days prior. An adage comes to mind: better to be silent and thought a fool rather than to speak and remove all doubt. At least no one will really know just how bad my guitar playing is.
