RoyB Posted March 9, 2008 Posted March 9, 2008 I'm really thinking a lot about a nice four diget Standard, so I know it's a long shot, but anyone know where one is for sale? I'd like one that's still straight with no real big issues.
Hamerphite Posted March 9, 2008 Posted March 9, 2008 A 4 digit standard is tough to get. I remember when I was looking for a 54 tele in 2004 and nobody wanted to sell one because they thought prices were going to double. I figure a similar phenomena is going on with the early standards?
serial Posted March 9, 2008 Posted March 9, 2008 I've sold between 10-12 in the past few years. Unfortunately, I'm down to two. #0017 and #0096. They aren't going ANYWHERE! Unfortunately, most of the ones I sold went for between 25% and 1/3 of what they're at now!

So off hand what can I expect to spend on one now if I can find one?
cmatthes Posted March 9, 2008 Posted March 9, 2008 These days, between $4-$5k seems to be the going rate for an original flametop Standard. Bound/Crowned examples, rare/unique finishes, originality and condition push prices upward. Older guitars are typically more expensive as well (a '77 will go for maybe $2k more than a similar '79, simply because they are incredibly rare). There are some out there that have been Kahlerized or have repaired headstocks that you may be able to score in the lower ranges if you don't mind that part or are looking for a restoration guitar. If you can find one cheaper, snag it and don't ask questions! I would buy back ANY of the 4-digits I've sold for 2-3X what I sold them for!
RoyB Posted March 9, 2008 Author Posted March 9, 2008 I'd love to find a flametop, but I'm open for any early one, but the kahlered guitar would be a deal breaker. Headstock break or rough condition would not bother me in the least. Funny thing is I'd rather have a dot neck.

It was in the same condition no breaks, some finnish wear non original hardware( Pickups) it went for around 3,600.00 or so. Good luck finding one. Their around and you may get lucky... Hey look at the standards rolling out now they are cool as hell and you know that the 95,96,97 era is going to be worth some coin in the future if you can find the right top and color and they are selling IMHO very cheap right now...
serial Posted March 10, 2008 Posted March 10, 2008 Considering that there were only about 400 or so made between December 7, 1974 and some point in 1985, there aren't a whole lot of them floating around. Also take into consideration that many have been altered, Kahlered (some well, some not so well), broken, destroyed in a fire, etc, they're pretty hard to stumble across. HFCers that I know own possibly a third of the total production-I've owned 12-15 over the years, most in the past decade. Here's what's left in my stable:
