Sam Posted July 25, 2008 Posted July 25, 2008 Hey all, some time back I came across a thread in which somebody noted that there's a charge for the deletion of inlays on custom orders (perhaps it was Pesocaster?) As it's not on the price list, anybody care to chime in on what it costs to have the blank board done? Well I'm at it, do ebony headstock overlays come standard on custom orders, or is that a separate charge also?
ArnieZ Posted July 25, 2008 Posted July 25, 2008 I think the ebony headstock overlay is standard on all bound and victoried guitars, I don't know about the models without the "custom" designation.ArnieZ
HSB0531 Posted July 25, 2008 Posted July 25, 2008 I would think that deleting the inlays would be N/C.They don't pre-make inlaid fretboards, so it would be one less build process for them.A cap of any type on the headstock would be an extra charge.
bbobb24 Posted July 25, 2008 Posted July 25, 2008 When I ordered my Monaco twins there was a credit cause I wanted dots instead of the victories on the Superpro.
Sam Posted July 25, 2008 Author Posted July 25, 2008 When I ordered my Monaco twins there was a credit cause I wanted dots instead of the victories on the Superpro. Thanks for the info so far, guys- though I'm pretty certain that at least one custom order on this board was slugged for having a blank board. In regard to the ebony HS overlay, if it's only guitars carrying the custom label, I'd be interested to see what the cost was for a Newport. Pirate, how much did that braz overlay set you back?
silentman Posted July 25, 2008 Posted July 25, 2008 I recall getting hit with around $100 list for deleting inlays on my watson, which came standard with dots.
cmatthes Posted July 25, 2008 Posted July 25, 2008 There IS an upcharge for deleting inlays. You can't think of it with the logic that you aren't getting something, but rather you are ordering something that Hamer has to take out of their normal process to get done. It may sound counterintuitive to the customer, but from a business standpoint, it makes perfect sense. Not sure what the current upcharge is for that, but I'd expect $150-$250 to list price as a range. The Ebony headstock overlay is indeed a stock feature on bound headstock models and looks great, in my opinion.
atquinn Posted July 25, 2008 Posted July 25, 2008 I'm fairly certain the charge was $150 for my '06 Studio Custom. Worth every penny.-Austin
Sam Posted July 25, 2008 Author Posted July 25, 2008 Why do you guys delete inlays? I enjoy the elegance/purity of a blank ebony board. Kinda like a fine classical guitar or violin etc. Plus, who actually uses the face inlays for navigation? I certainly don't. There are also folk who claim that a blank board produces the best tone... Thanks for the help chaps.
Feynman Posted July 25, 2008 Posted July 25, 2008 I agree. I drool over Austin's customized SC. Maybe it's because I came from classical first, but I do love the look of a sleek, preferably ebony, fretboard. I'm just too cheap to special order anything.
silentman Posted July 25, 2008 Posted July 25, 2008 Why do you guys delete inlays?Come on now, Jim. A case could be made that inlays are for pussies.
kurtsstuff Posted July 25, 2008 Posted July 25, 2008 Without inlays your intonation is sooo way better.....
sw686blue Posted July 25, 2008 Posted July 25, 2008 Some people just like the feel of hard ebony in their hands.
Guest pirateflynn Posted July 25, 2008 Posted July 25, 2008 Some people just like the feel of hard ebony in their hands. Hilarious! I'd be interested to see what the cost was for a Newport. Pirate, how much did that braz overlay set you back? You know, I honestly don't remember .... could be selective memory! Get a hold of your dealer of choice and he'll send you over a price list. The actual price will be discounted from there. Feel free to PM me if you have any questions about a Newport. Good luck with it!
atquinn Posted July 25, 2008 Posted July 25, 2008 Some people just like the feel of hard ebony in their hands. Now that you mention it, my '06 Studio is my wife's favorite guitar -Austin

The Ebony headstock overlay is indeed a stock feature on bound headstock models and looks great, in my opinion. When I ordered my Special last year, I sent the pickup to the factory that I wanted installed. I still paid for the pickup that was not installed and they didn't use, but knew that's what was going to happen going in. Like cmatthes said, if it's anything that they have to do differently than usual, they are going to charge for it. I did get an ebony overlay on an unbound headstock without ordering or paying for it.... which is cool!

I have a custom ordered Newport in the air as I type this- just wanted to know what I could have had and for what price. I wouldn't be surprised if the top came from the same tree as yours.
HSB0531 Posted July 26, 2008 Posted July 26, 2008 Why do you guys delete inlays? I know I need 'em.I'm half blind in the dark...HA!
HSB0531 Posted July 26, 2008 Posted July 26, 2008 Get LEDs! There you go!How about a reverse polarity switch to change led colors. No wait, mood ring stones to show how I'm feeling about my playing.
burningyen Posted July 26, 2008 Posted July 26, 2008 When I deleted inlays on my custom orders, I was told it was an upcharge because Hamer uses some of the inlay holes to guide their CNC machine.
Sam Posted July 27, 2008 Author Posted July 27, 2008 Get LEDs! I own one with LEDs! Pretty silly feature- but great guitar from the early 90's. Braz board too.
cmatthes Posted July 27, 2008 Posted July 27, 2008 I was being mostly serious, actually! The Neon Yellow SS-1 (Tommy Williams model) that I recently passed along to RacerX looks like it has no inlays on the ebony board, but flick the little switch, and you get all those glowing red dots...awesome!
