Feynman Posted February 17, 2009 Posted February 17, 2009 Anyone got VH 1984 on tape or any other period correct stuff for my incoming '84 car?
cmatthes Posted February 17, 2009 Posted February 17, 2009 Anyone got VH 1984 on tape or any other period correct stuff for my incoming '84 car?I just tossed a bunch of those away last fall!I'll look around - may still have something that fits the bill. I know I did have a few racks worth in storage at my Mom's house, but not sure if they're still there.
unfun75 Posted February 17, 2009 Posted February 17, 2009 When I was in college, I traded a whole box of hair metal tapes for credit at a music store. They loved 'em. All the employees gathered around to check out the titles I had. I probably couldn't get a penny each for 'em now.
velorush Posted February 17, 2009 Posted February 17, 2009 Anyone got VH 1984 on tape or any other period correct stuff for my incoming '84 car?I gave a bud every cassette I had when we moved from Kentaxy back to Tennessee in 1998. Only thing I have on cassette now is a recording I made in a friend's studio around 1987 or '88. I think my car has a cassette player in it... don't think I've ever used it...What 1984 vehicle are you receiving? That might have some bearing on what would be not just period correct, but vehicle correct!
Feynman Posted February 17, 2009 Author Posted February 17, 2009 84 VW GTI.I am thinking of the tapes I used to have (Scorpions, VH, Dokken, etc).It has an old-school Concord cassette deck in it, so I figured it would be cool to just have a couple of tapes on hand. There is an aux input for an mp3 player wired in as well, but, well, you know, I need the "look."
mathman Posted February 17, 2009 Posted February 17, 2009 Give me a minute to look. I might be able to hook you up. I have some originals from that time. Home mix recordings be of interest?

I bought one around 1981 with built-in 25X25 power amp into two Alpine 6X9s for my '69 Camaro. Kids today would laugh at that but back then that was a SYSTEM!Period metal would definitely be appropriate for the GTI. Huge fun! A friend in college's dad was the service manager for the VW dealer in Jackson (TN, they actually had a VW dealership back then). His dad had a Wolfsburg Limited Edition that was brought to college on rare limited engagements of serious thrash. Nothing like a 4-cyl. turbo in a 2,000 pound car! I think redline was somewhere like 9,500. It screamed.
Jeff R Posted February 17, 2009 Posted February 17, 2009 Mitch, I have a sh!tlood of stuff in storage at my kids house that's perfect for the VW. My old collection from back in the day. I'm going to see the kids Thursday and I'll let you know what I dig up for you Considering it's a VW, I gotta send you Scorps and Accept. Sorry, no Nena so you're on your own rounding up "99 Luftbaloons" LOL
cmatthes Posted February 17, 2009 Posted February 17, 2009 I know that I had "Blackout", "Love at First Sting", "Under Lock & Key", "Bent Out of Shape", some VH and others...If I get out there any time in the next few months, I'll grab 'em for ya.

ecnal Posted February 17, 2009 Posted February 17, 2009 Slightly off topic, but I had a brand new supposedly state-of-the-art car in 2002 that had a built in navigation system with a screen that, when you pushed a button, slowly lifted up James Bond style and behind it revealed a . . . cassette deck! It was really anticlimatic and got me made fun of several times.
Feynman Posted February 17, 2009 Author Posted February 17, 2009 It was really anticlimatic and got me made fun of several times.LOL. What was it?
ecnal Posted February 17, 2009 Posted February 17, 2009 It was really anticlimatic and got me made fun of several times.LOL. What was it?It was an M5. I really liked the car; great engine, daily driver, and except for the 6 speed, just about anyone could drive it anywhere. The cassette thing and the yuppie a-hole connotations were the only negatives. I did play my Defenders of the Faith tape in it regularly.
Jason01 Posted February 18, 2009 Posted February 18, 2009 I'll see if I've still got some casettes around and send 'em your way. Pretty sure I had some VH and Scorps.
mathman Posted February 18, 2009 Posted February 18, 2009 I actually have some FM radio recorded tapes. You can actually imagine you are driving around in San Diego listening to the radio.
mathman Posted February 18, 2009 Posted February 18, 2009 KGB Chicken? Yep, KGB 1983, van halen, ac-dc, tom Petty and more ac-dc as the label says! Sadly it's recorded on voice quality cassette rather than nice metal ones. Seems like I should have another one or two.
Feynman Posted February 18, 2009 Author Posted February 18, 2009 It was an M5. I gotta tell you my M6 story. One of my friends has a new M6 <awesome car, by the way - way out of my league>. Unfortunately he was stupid and managed to get a DUI (or maybe it was two) in it last year. They made him install some sort of lockout device you have to breathe into to start it. If you fail that test, you have to visit the DMV and go through a very long process to get it all straightened out.So anyway, he brings the car in for service. The mechanic that works on it has to breathe into the thing to start it, but he showed up to work drunk. You guessed it.What a nightmare my friend had to go through to get enough evidence to prove it wasn't him. I find it all humorous and fitting.
Aceldama Posted February 18, 2009 Posted February 18, 2009 I think I have some Dokken on cassette. Let me pull down the box...
ecnal Posted February 18, 2009 Posted February 18, 2009 I remember when those GTi's came out and how much fun their owners had embarrassing Mustang and Camaro owners in streetlight challenges.
Feynman Posted February 24, 2009 Author Posted February 24, 2009 You draw the lineAnd you leave it all behind youYou lost your mind and then you lose control...
ZR Posted February 24, 2009 Posted February 24, 2009 Little OT but we had a Jetta GLI from that time I think it was also an 84. Anyway, get yourself this repair book with a lot of hand-drawn pics in that looks like it was written by some stoner hippy. I used it to do many repairs and found it really cool as well!
Nathan of Brainfertilizer Fame Posted February 24, 2009 Posted February 24, 2009 1) There's a website for fast hatch love...well, and other less cool cars, too.2) I have the "Light of Day" soundtrack, and two Peter Framptons: "Premonition", and "When All the Pieces Fit".You are welcome to them.
Jimbilly Posted February 24, 2009 Posted February 24, 2009 My '89 944 still has a tape deck, I leave a Billy Idol cassette in there, it still doesn't get much better than Rebel Yell IMO. I had an '83 Scirocco, same drivetrain/motor/suspension/brakes as the '84 gti (same lots of stuff). That 8v 1.8 is a fantastic motor, I had 342k on mine when it got hit, it still didn't burn oil, I'd never even had the head off. Then I got an '82 Scirocco (1.7, NO power but good mileage). Now my daily driver is an '88 Scirocco with a 2.0 16v, it has more power, but its pretty slow by modern standards where Civics sometimes have close to 200hp. I'd recommend getting a 5th gear conversion, or a wide ration tranny (over the standard close ratio), I had a taller 5th put in my current Scirocco and I picked up 4mpg on average, I get 35 on longer drives. Also that 3500 rpm 'buzz' on the freeway gets old after a while, 2700 is a lot more comfortable for more mature drivers. If you're not familiar with that era of VWs, you may want to spend some time on the vw vortex forums. I'll be available via email if you have any issues with that car you might need to talk about, I've been through a few with those, I feel I have some understanding of CIS VWs. jimchristensen at yahoo.com
