Your thoughts on Mesa Studio 22 (+)

I think I have read some positive commentary here on these amps.

I have narrowed my amp search to two, a .22+ being one of them.

I understand the (+) to indicate the amp has a "lead master" control to better enable level matching between the channels, and both the .22 and .22+ came with or without the 5-band EQ. Is this correct?

I still tend to practice mostly at quite low volumes, so for distortion and effects I'll just be running the GT-8 into the amp. On occasion I get left alone in the house and can turn up the volume, though.

Can the Studio .22 play nice at low volumes? Friendly to effects gizmos? Fairly versatile as-is? Etc...

Any and all thoughts appreciated.

Thanks.

I just picked one up and I love it. (Thanks Caddie!) Evidently a 22+ was what Kurt Cobain used on "Nevermind"

Heres the deal ... as least as far as I'm concerned

you need to get the 22+ w/equalizer ... The equalizer is very handy! It was an option so they don't all have it. The 22 doesn't have the master volume so stay away from those.

replace the V1 tube with a lower gain tube or the lead channel is almost unusable ...

it probably could use a different speaker, the black shadow is a little harsh ... for blues I hear the Weber alnico blue dog is the ticket.

All kinds of different tones/sounds etc. available ... gets loud as heck AND sounds good at low volumes

I'm getting some great sounds out of it ... only drawback is the controls are very sensitive so it does take a little fiddlin' . write down your settings when you find something you like!

Basically totally f'n killer if you find the right model in good shape

feel free to write down my settings B)

IMHO, if you want something Boogie to run a multi-effects device into, the Boogie Subway Blues cannot be beat, except maybe by the Satellite series. It is a similar rig to the 22 in that it is low power (2xel84), lightweight, and still capable of being obnoxiously loud. It loves pedals and gizmos, and is about the same price or less than a 22 or 22+. The reverb is fantastic and the tone controls really make a big difference when you move them. I have a Subway Blues and a MKIIC+. The Subway gets used more often as it is a far more manageable beast. Sometimes, the IIC+ frightens me a bit! B)

If you are not going to use the gain channel, why bother getting an amp that has one?

Just sayin'

I bought a Studio .22 with a graphic EQ back in 1986 and still have it. It is a nice amp to practice with.

IT EATS TUBES! There will be something whistling or microphonic more often than in my other tube amps.

i had a racked head version of the .22+ w/ eq.

a bunch of the solos and some rhythms on our cd were recorded w/ it

(it actually recorded better than the pricey carr rambler i had started the cd with).

i have a celestion greenback 8 ohm 12" that i may be selling that would be perfect for that.

Punkavenger, yours has the "look" as well - very nice.

I scribbled down your intriguing EQ settings. B)

MCChris, the Mesa is being played by the singer/guitarist?

"Long Live the Head" rocks. I haven't listened to them all yet.

Yes. And thank you.

Bought mine from my local pusher in '89. Custom-ordered from the shop - he did a run of several Boogie amps that matched this one, but this was the only one I could afford! B)

It was a helluva lot easier to lug around this one than the Silverface Twin I had been using.

Wow B) you run the bass high for a Mark-type Boogie.

Those actually aren't my settings - I ran a cloth over the controls to get a little dust off for the photo!

The only negs I had with the 22+ were

)1 All of the controls are EXTREMELY sensitive. On some knobs the diff in tone & vol between say 7 and 7.5 or less can be enormous.

2) Here is where it gets tricky, the lead & rhythm channels share a few controls (I can't recall which knobs it was.) Dialing in the sound you want from each channel when you are sharing controls can be tedious and time consuming. It may force you to make some compromises between the channels. The switchable EQ is a big help with this issue. keep these things in mind if you want to step on the footswitch and go from rhythm to lead without bending down to twiddle knobs. Although the chicks standing, chanting and cheering by the footlights might enjoy catching an eyefull of some plumber's crack! B)B)

I had previous experience with Mesa amps before I picked up the 22+ so I knew about the sensitive controls. I was able to dial it in to my taste by starting with the recommended settings in the 22+ manual and twiddling away from there. I took copious notes as I twisted the knobs so that I could keep track of what happened and had a way to get back to something I liked.

Overall a great sounding amp clean or crunch. Remember its MESA LOUD. Great Mother of Pearl!!! LOUDY, LOUDY, LOUDY. Yet it sounds very nice, retains great tone when tamed down thru the Vol & Master controls or cranked up to deafening levels.

I sold it only because it was gathering dust, its inventory clearance time around here, I still have too many amps. And Punkavenger was in desparate need of a real man's amp.

Oh yeah?

I think Caddie had another mid size amp or two ... A hot rod deluxe and hmmm, He might still want to sell that Marshall 20 watt reissue ...

Caddie, speak up!
