Guest pirateflynn Posted July 10, 2005 Posted July 10, 2005 It sure took a lot of work and the details are very impressive ...............but stylistically it is a little over the top for my tastes.
JES1680 Posted July 10, 2005 Posted July 10, 2005 Thorns are amazing. I agree a bit over the top for me as well. But the craftsmanship is second to none.
tafkathundernotes Posted July 10, 2005 Posted July 10, 2005 Tuquoise inlay.... Hey Jol, any chance we could.... ah, nevermind
rmahurin Posted July 10, 2005 Posted July 10, 2005 To me, that guitar looks like a really expensive dining room table you might see on "Cribs".
atquinn Posted July 10, 2005 Posted July 10, 2005 Dangit!! For some reason, I haven't been able to get to the Thorn board for the past couple of days. Anyway, I've been blown away by almost every Thorn I've seen and hey, if you're a custom builder, there's no defense against customers with bad taste. -Austin
Brownsound Posted July 10, 2005 Posted July 10, 2005 One word "Furniture". Actually its quite beautiful but if its not got the sound then all the turqoise and and spalted expensive wood is for naught. That guitar is destined to be too spendy and pretty to be played to death...again...furniture.
kurtsstuff Posted July 10, 2005 Posted July 10, 2005 Yep....another useless hunk of wood and wire that resembles a guitar but on the other hand...if ya got more money than sense or good taste...why the hell not!!!
hamerhead Posted July 10, 2005 Posted July 10, 2005 Wow! The inlaid top is a killer idea. The craftsmanship is incredible. For me, though, it would hang on the wall and never get touched. I'd be scared to play it.
killerteddybear Posted July 10, 2005 Posted July 10, 2005 Now just imagine some punk with a personal hygiene deficiency banging out "You Really Got Me" on this guitar - not pretty, is it? Brownsound had it right - "furniture"; and not even something you'd be comfortable to sit on... it's the fancy chair in the corner of your aunt's living room that no one's allowed to sit in... (true story in my family!).
edgar_allan_poe Posted July 10, 2005 Posted July 10, 2005 Hmmm......interesting thoughts...let me be the voice of reason here..1. Not everyone who buys an expensive guitar will put it on display and never play it. I don't know anything about that buyer so I wont comment what he will or will not do with that guitar.2. I have played three Thorns and they all sounded as good as they looked. Take away all of the bells and whistles and this guitar is essentially the following..Korina body and neck, Koa top, Brazillian board. I don't know about you...but that sounds like a good recipie to me.3. Thorns are nowhere near as expensive as you would think.
cmatthes Posted July 10, 2005 Posted July 10, 2005 Ron does great work. I'd personally play the crap out of any guitar I own, I don't really care how expensive or purty the thing is. The blue quilt 3P90 one with the Mermaid inlay on the back (that inlay's not my thing, but nice work!) is pretty close to a Custom Order Hamer I shelved last year.
BTMN Posted July 10, 2005 Author Posted July 10, 2005 The Freakin' Koa pickup bobbins and Bridge are my favorite parts. That and the inlayed archtop and headstock wood. BTW, I would play the mess out of it and it sounds like the owner might too.
Steve Haynie Posted July 10, 2005 Posted July 10, 2005 I like it. The inlay on the back of the neck concerns me, though. How will it feel if someone actually plays the crap out of this guitar for years? If the wood shrinks or expands will that inlay start to "shift" in the wood? The wooden bridge/tailpiece impresses me, but I wonder how it really affects the tone. Saying it is "warm" may be an understatement.Let me win a lottery and I'll buy one. Then I'll give my own review.
adferreira Posted July 10, 2005 Posted July 10, 2005 I like the tuquoise inlay. The rest of it is fairly standard, (body shape, woods etc)I probably wouldn't get one simply because I've never played a Thorn to know if I like the feel. Now imagine Victories done as Onyx/ Tuquoise /Onyx, alternating.
Brownsound Posted July 10, 2005 Posted July 10, 2005 Now just imagine some punk with a personal hygiene deficiency banging out "You Really Got Me" on this guitar - not pretty, is it?Brownsound had it right - "furniture"; and not even something you'd be comfortable to sit on... it's the fancy chair in the corner of your aunt's living room that no one's allowed to sit in... (true story in my family!). I hear ya about the verbotten chair! I dont doubt most of you guys would play the crap out of it but I have seen so many people order custom stuff and put it on display for the most part. Me I piss my inlaws off by carrying a $600 custom knife (one of several from my collecting days) when Im camping with them and I use the piss out of it. I remember tossing it to an inlaw (in sheath) for them to cut marshmallow sticks for the fire, after he was done he stuck it in the top of a stump, he commented on how damn sharp it was and I said " not bad for a $600 marshmallow stick cutter eh?"...he proceeded to dress me down on why would an idiot pay $600 for a knife and why was I carrying it. I told him I use EVERTHING I buy. I still love to think of the look in his face!... About the inlay in the back of the neck, Im sure extended playing and years of weather change will result in the inlay protruding slightly higher than the wood, or worse. For me the back of the neck is holy ground, to be devoid of all decorative doodads.
mattb Posted July 11, 2005 Posted July 11, 2005 I'm a huge fan of Thorn's and someday will place my order. Here is a link to many other of his works.http://members.aol.com/thorninlay/
MOJO Posted July 11, 2005 Posted July 11, 2005 i've got 2 Thorn's (#21, #48 )and absolutly love the look and tone of both..the thing with Ron is you can get it ultra fancy like this one or just simple and straight ahead (he's done a fair share of them also)like some one said earlier.if you take away the inlay its pretty much a nice player guitar..limba neck and body , koa top, rosewood fingerboardwhen i got #48 Ron wanted to know if i wanted to be the first to try the prototype Wooden bridge on mine, i said not right now but he is holding a piece from the my guitars original wood in case i should change my mind down the road it all up to the buyer really..Ron doesn't just create a guitar and hope someone likes it and will buy it,each guitar and options are each picked by the owner..you want the Mona Lisa on the fingerboard..Ron: no problem....you want no inlay at all.. Ron:no problem...actually Ron's only downfall is he's too nice to say No to all the crazy stuff and concepts people come up with..{i'm as guilty as charged as anyone )i give him credit though..if you got something different you want to tryhe'll pull it off or die in the attempt.anyway
Guest teefus2 Posted July 11, 2005 Posted July 11, 2005 diseased/spalted wood sure looks pretty but what does it sound like?
