What, no Jethro Tull? They won the first heavy metal Grammy so they must be the best, right?

;)

where are the scorpions???????????????

They were disqualified for their filthy album covers. Even Metal has its limits (yeah, right).

IMHO Anthrax should be up there as well. They started the whole rock/rap genre. JMHO. Sabbath is a no brainer.

A perfect reason why Anthrax should be disqualified! ;)

The first five inductees from the list:

1- Black Sabbath

2- Judas Priest

3- Iron Maiden

4- Metallica

5- Slayer

The ones in the poll:

Mercyful Fate

Megadeth

Helloween

Venom

Kreator

Death

Bathory

Motorhead

Voivod

Anthrax

I'd expect Mercyful Fate or Megadeth to get it, but I'd go for Motorhead.

Incidentally, and I don't remember seeing this mentioned so apologies if it was - while getting caught up on my Guitar Player (I still have three magazines where I'm a year behind), I came across an article about a book that ranks the top metal guitarists of all time, and surprisingly, the number one slot went to Dave Mustaine. Don't recall the reasoning at the moment, but it was a pleasant surprise to see a different name at the top of the list.

Voted for Motorhead before I got to this far down the thread! Let's go stuff the ballot box.

I hear ya...not my thing either. But, none of those other bands besides Sabbath have had as much of an influence on modern Metal as Anthrax. Great/good bands? Absolutely. But none of them changed the genre as much as Sabbath and Anthrax.

The L.A. hair bands are missing. In a way that is good, but there were some of those bands that earned a place at the top.

Is Motorhead really metal? They have their own way of playing rock and roll that does not fall in line with any other bands. They just sound like a very heavy hard rock band.

I voted Mercyful Fate. I am a big fan, but in addition they are certainly quite influential and original.

I would have gone next with Death and Megadeth, in that order, if I had voted more than once.

Edited to add: Is there any other band actually deserving the 6th position more than Mercyful Fate? ;)
