RRHamer Posted August 10, 2005 Posted August 10, 2005 A while back I put up a post saying I needed a guitar amp for church. One of the suggestions was the Traynor amps. I used the YCV40WR tonight at Church for a rehearsal. It sounded awful! The amp sounds good when it is cranked up but I was playing at such low volume that it just did not work. I also could not hear myself real well. At this point I am not sure what to try next. I think my next step will be to try my POD through the PA direct. It is not really what I would like to have but I think it will sound better than trying to play through an amp at low volume. The thing I have to figure out is what to use for a monitor on stage to hear myself. They will have stage monitor but they are pretty limited on their monitor mix so I am afraid I will still have trouble hearing myself. I was thinking of getting a powered Hot Spot monitor and putting on a mic stand so I can have it close to myself. I was also thinking of just using headphones.Sound off guys cause I need help real bad!
hardheartedbill Posted August 10, 2005 Posted August 10, 2005 I posted the best solution last time you asked ........cueing BCR Greg
Jimbilly Posted August 10, 2005 Posted August 10, 2005 Last Sunday our guitarist used a Behringer v-amp direct, and into a '78 Champ for stage monitor (w/ a Centaura in granite no less...). It sounded great, he told me he finally got around to reading the manual on the v-amp, and that helped a lot. It had a nice place in the mix. I always had good luck w/ my tech21 t-60. If you couldn't hear yourself real well, how do you know that it was awful ?
RRHamer Posted August 10, 2005 Author Posted August 10, 2005 Well what I could hear sounded really bad. And when no one else was playing and I played by myself it sounded bad. Which is really disappointing because the Traynor actually sounds pretty good cranked up. I will have to see if I can find some Tech 21 amps here locally. I think the problem with an amp will be hearing myself on stage.
Imiss85 Posted August 10, 2005 Posted August 10, 2005 Why not try an atomic amp with your pod? You can get it from one of the online mega stores with a 45 day return policy. If you dont' like it , send it back you are only out shipping. I've heard very good things about the atomic and the pod xt combined.
mykel Posted August 10, 2005 Posted August 10, 2005 Actually, I've used my Traynor ycv40 at my church. I've gone back and forth between that and a Fender Tweed Pro Junior (thanks RacerX). My church is small (about 100-120 or so people in each service) and so I don't mic the amp. Which allows me to turn it up a little more. Not sure how well the singers like it who stand next to it, but oh well. Lately, I've gone to using the Fender more, since at the same volume level, it's a little more "cranked" than the Traynor (15 vs 40 watts). Last weekend I played with a group at a friends church and used the Traynor (with my mahogany standard - thanks bruce919!). They decided they wanted to record the music so I had to be mic'ed. Which meant I had to turn WAY down. The sound guy was freaking out on me (even during our practice when I was playing the Fender, which I had to keep at around 2/10 for sound levels! with a loud drummer!) So it didn't sound nearly as nice as when I'd been practicing at home. oh well. Anyway, if you like the Traynor, perhaps the 15 watt model (ycv-20) might be better. Or you can go direct. I'm guessing no one in the congragation will know the difference. m.
sovtekking Posted August 10, 2005 Posted August 10, 2005 Definitley try the Tech 21 trademark 60. they are solid state, but they dont sound or feel solid state and they are plenty loud for the church crouds. Also, tech21 makes a power engine that I believe could be used as a power amp to make the pod into a full out amp. www.tech21nyc.com is a link to their website, and ebay usually has a couple good deals on the tech 21 stuff too.
Brooks Posted August 10, 2005 Posted August 10, 2005 Definitley try the Tech 21 trademark 60. or you could use a tech21 trademark10 at the low volumes you have to play, i use mine for rehearsals w/ my band (drummer is not a basher).
FunkyE9th Posted August 10, 2005 Posted August 10, 2005 Try the Reverend Goblin. It is switchable between 5 and 15 watts. The 5 watt setting might work for you. Reverend is going out of the amp business. So it's going to get harder to get these amps. They are offering free shipping with 14-day trial.-FunkyE9th
serial Posted August 10, 2005 Posted August 10, 2005 Tech 21 either TM60 or TM10. No question-those are great amps at any volume.
JohnnyScarp Posted August 10, 2005 Posted August 10, 2005 +1 for TM60. I've been using one for four years now at my church gig. I often get complements on my "guitar sounds" (tone). I play with two different bands at the church. One is a little softer the other kicks up quite a bit at times.I always can hear myself in the mix (the sound system is not great - the sound guy does his best) and I don't have any problems getting a good tone at lower volumes.I use a 3 hole duotone w/rios, and run the acoustic side thru a Yorkville. Both amps have xlr direct out for sends to the board. The only fx I use w/TM60 is a delay in the loop - on/off, channel & volume boost with the TM60 foot control. Yorkville has built-in fx. I sometimes play around w/them, but usually stay on a light reverb. It took me a while - I tried a few different rigs 'till I got comfortable w/my tone and volume there. It was worth the time and $$. Good Luck. You'll get it.BCRGreg was a big help. Thanks Greg.
anotherfreak2 Posted August 10, 2005 Posted August 10, 2005 another +1 for the TM60, if that is too much amp check out the TM30. what started out as a limited run became the next best amp from Tech 21. All of the Tech 21 amps have a REAL line out that actually sounds good when you use it!
BCR Greg Posted August 10, 2005 Posted August 10, 2005 I posted the best solution last time you asked ........cueing BCR Greg Yup. The Trademark 60 sounds great REGARDLESS of volume. Don't believe me! I don't talk about them because I sell them....I USE them because I LOVE THEM!!!!!
sirDaniel Posted August 10, 2005 Posted August 10, 2005 +9 for the T60...I owned one in 2000, sold it, bought one in 2002, sold it, bought one this year, this one I keep. I sounds great at all volumes.
sirDaniel Posted August 10, 2005 Posted August 10, 2005 BTW, I HATE to suck up to BCR, but the guy knows tone. We've all blown past many of his tone suggestions in the past only to be haunted by the truth later.
Bass Guy Dave Posted August 10, 2005 Posted August 10, 2005 I've got the TRIAC 3 channel preamp pedal from Tech-21 (Thanks, BCR Greg) and if the Trademark 60 sounds anything like it, I think you'd be hard pressed to pass it up (especially having the speaker/ power amp all in one.)The TRIAC just has a speaker simulated 1/4" line out, but it's meant to just plug right into the snake/ board or a recorder. It can be used on the FX return of an amp pretty well, but you may need to tweak if you just plug it in the the front input. The TRIAC has a great "British" channel and good meaty cleans. Stupid-easy to use and built tough. No built-in FX, but that's why you buy other guys pedals for that.Good luck!Best Wishes
bamboohead Posted August 10, 2005 Posted August 10, 2005 I have a Berhinger LX-1200H that I play through the Behringer BG412S cab. It's nice for bar gigs, plenty of volume. The wide range of tones and FX are great in the studio but, if I play live I use a Pignose G40V. It has a 10" speaker of there own special speaker. We have only played in a church setting twice(weddings). once I used the Pig miked into the PA and the other into the BG412S cab. Both times I had plenty of volume("TURN THAT THING DOWN"). One was a small size room the other a large. The Pig sounded great clean, or pushed to distortion.A couple of stomp pedals is all you should need for FX. Sim amps are nice but stick with tube. The Pig costs less than $200 bucks, Has two 6L6 and three 12ax7's for 40 watts of clean tone. Again it will drive the 4x12 cab with no problem.Try one out at the music shop. Good luck. Peace,Love and guitar strings. PS, listen to BCR you should.
cloakerz Posted August 11, 2005 Posted August 11, 2005 I don't know what to say. I use that traynor at church 1000+ seats, had volume on 3.5 or so, gain about 6-7, sounds incredible with my strat. I guess the fralin pickups do help some but sounds great with my 93 archtop gt with p90's too. I could not get a bad tone from that amp.
rmahurin Posted August 11, 2005 Posted August 11, 2005 Doooood, If you want to nail the original Church sound,...... Ah,.sorry....nevermind.
RRHamer Posted August 11, 2005 Author Posted August 11, 2005 The other night when I was playing with the Traynor I had the gain on 5-6, but was only able to turn the volume up to 1. When you crank the Traynor up it sounds good, but at that low of a volume I don't think you can get good tone out of a tube amp. I am going to call Guitar Center tommorrow to see if they have any Tech 21 amps.
BCR Greg Posted August 11, 2005 Posted August 11, 2005 Yeah, call Guitar Center, they'll take care of you.
sirDaniel Posted August 11, 2005 Posted August 11, 2005 duh, why buy from someone who might KNOW SOMETHING. GC will definitely "give you the deal"
MCChris Posted August 11, 2005 Posted August 11, 2005 Where'd you get that picture of me from my GC days?
RRHamer Posted August 11, 2005 Author Posted August 11, 2005 I don't like Guitar Center. Ususally what I will do is go there to look at something and then buy it somewhere else. I am not going to buy an amp without playing through it first. They don't even carry the Tech 21 Amps and I don' t think that anyone in Austin does.
