RoyB Posted June 11, 2010 Posted June 11, 2010 Being a long time Lynyrd Skynyrd fan as well as Blackfoot I've seen the guitar Ricky Medlocke is holding in this photo. So today look what showed up because of damage received in the Nashville flood. It's sad to see the guitar in this shape, but still cool to have it in the shop!!
elduave Posted June 11, 2010 Posted June 11, 2010 Don't let Stike catch you spelling Lynyrd Skynyrd like that!;-)Medlocke is a bad ass.
RoyB Posted June 11, 2010 Author Posted June 11, 2010 Don't let Stike catch you spelling Lynyrd Skynyrd like that! ;-) Medlocke is a bad ass. Man how did I do that
Stike Posted June 11, 2010 Posted June 11, 2010 Don't let Stike catch you spelling Lynyrd Skynyrd like that! ;-) Medlocke is a bad ass. For those wondering what El is refering to Facebookhas been starting fan/business pages on their own (unsolicited) and the one they did for LS is spelled Lynard Skyard. Yes Ricky is. What are you going to play on first Roy, Train Train or Highway Song?

specialk Posted June 11, 2010 Posted June 11, 2010 Best of luck with the restoration, Roy. Keep us posted!
DaveH Posted June 11, 2010 Posted June 11, 2010 Well if we can turn it back into a guitar and because we are next to the tracks it's gotta be Train Train Yep, that is THE one. Actually, I've been digging again on the Tomcattin' and Marauder albums this past week, and they are bad-ass too.
Jason01 Posted June 11, 2010 Posted June 11, 2010 I'd love to hear more about what kind of damage has been done by the flooding and how its going to be repaired. You never know what someones going to decide to get rid of and throw on ebay after this flood and it would be nice to spot a potential problem.

LordOfTheThighs Posted June 11, 2010 Posted June 11, 2010 Really cool Medlocke's guitar has been entrusted to RS. I think that speaks highly of you guys reputation. RAWK! Me thinks Rossington looks more than a little like Ice-T, in this pic. And for your dailey hoochie fix, search google images for Ice-T. Yeah Baby!
murkat Posted June 11, 2010 Posted June 11, 2010 it's not in bad shape really. Roy, did you get GT and bird as well?(we) were not authorized to the restore, But I did cleaned it up, document, etc. on it. Very cool guitar, major mojo. lmk if you got the "others" Roy. J

JWe did get all three. The Bird is an easy fix as it's mostly residue stuck in the finish from the case, so a little wet sand and buff and some electronics works and it will be ready to go back to him. The Explorer is solid, but the electronics are a wreck and a good bit of the finish on the front is trying to escape. I hope to be able to melt it back in and then that guitar should be solid. The LP is a wreck!! binding loose, finish falling off, ect. I think it's going to be a full refin after it dries out. Spoke to Ricky today and he was happy to find out they are not badly damaged at all and should be good for many more years of touring. Oh by the way one of the tuner bushing from the bird was missing. We checked the case and no luck. You thnk the custom shop can help us with a banjo tuner bushing?
murkat Posted June 11, 2010 Posted June 11, 2010 Bushing, no problem The Bird is the best one out of the bunch, wont take much. lmk what pups he has in it.... I am very curious,... very old school what ever they are. The bobbins look "fatter" than ones of today... I was not authorized to "peep" in to see what tics. the GT is a haus! check out the thickness of that bad boy, deff alot thicker than what it offered now. I have worked on it before and that GT is something else. Looking forward to the on going results. I will post pics later if you dont mind adding onto your thread. J

J The Explorer has the stock Shaw in the neck and a 57 classic in the bridge with a bunch of junk electronics, the bird has a OLD Duncan Semorized (Pre-Custom) in the neck and a 500T (yuck) in the bridge and the Paul (a very rare 1971 model 58) originally had P-90s and now has a Duncan JB-J (bridge reading 16.2k) in the neck and a Duncan Jazz (8k) in the bridge (man that's ass backwards) all their electronics are just flat trash now.

With the pup's swapped around i'm sure its an instant lead boost when flipping to the neck. Still a little wierd though. I just bought LS new album and its pretty good. I liked Vicious Cycle as well.
Jason01 Posted June 12, 2010 Posted June 12, 2010 Ok, this is something I've been wondering. When you guys say the electronics are trashed do you mean the pickups as well? And if a pickup is wrecked from a flood can you pull the coils off the magnet and rewind it?
RoyB Posted June 12, 2010 Author Posted June 12, 2010 Ok, this is something I've been wondering. When you guys say the electronics are trashed do you mean the pickups as well? And if a pickup is wrecked from a flood can you pull the coils off the magnet and rewind it?Normally I mean just the pots, caps, switches etc, but a couple of the pickups are dead. Yes they can be rewound, but in the case here a 500T is not worth rewinging and neither is a Duncan JB. It's cheaper to change them.
formula73 Posted June 12, 2010 Posted June 12, 2010 I'm glad to hear they'll all be ok. You know, BG Pickups will do a rewind for $50, and I'm sure Bryan would be jazzed to be doing something for a name as big as Ricky Medlocke, were he to want to keep the JB. His turnaround is pretty quick, too.500T...whatever.

RoyB Posted August 15, 2010 Author Posted August 15, 2010 Just getting around to posting some photos of both Ricky's Explorer and Firebird after all their repairs from the Nashville flood. They are now back in Ricky's hands.
specialk Posted August 15, 2010 Posted August 15, 2010 Great pics of great guitars!Any idea if they'll see the stage again?
RoyB Posted August 15, 2010 Author Posted August 15, 2010 The firebird was the first guitar his father bought him and almost loosing it made him rethink how special the guitar is, so I believe he said it's now staying home and retired, but I think the Miss Stacy is going back out with him.
gtone Posted August 15, 2010 Posted August 15, 2010 Good job with the repairs Roy. Good thing a train didn't happen by as you had Ricky's treasured axes on the tracks - would've been some sick irony, huh!?
cmatthes Posted August 15, 2010 Posted August 15, 2010 Totally cool thread, Roy!Love the shots of that Explorer. "Train, Train" indeed.
