Travis Posted March 10, 2005 Posted March 10, 2005 I've got my eye on so many things. I just can't really decide right now. I want them all, and eventually I will have them all. But what should I get first? To be fair, it's not as if anyone's opinion is REALLY going to influence me. I just like seeing some of the arguments for and against certain models. I'm looking for some good vintage blues/rock tone with enough versatility to shred it up if I have to. In other words, It should handle everything from slightly overdriven to high gain. What the hell, let's put some cleans in there, too.
formula73 Posted March 10, 2005 Posted March 10, 2005 Where are the pointies? Y'know, the ones with airbrushed chicks or fighter planes and whatnot. That's descrimination, and I don't have to take it.
adferreira Posted March 10, 2005 Posted March 10, 2005 Phantom. Look at the Hamer site for the Tonequest PDF.That thing is sweet enough to sell itself.
Nuclear Wessel Posted March 10, 2005 Posted March 10, 2005 The guitars you listed will all give you great blues rock tone. Great clean tone too. If you have to shred once in a while, they're all probably good for that too, but I think the Mirage might be a little better suited to high performance playing. What about a Daytona with a JB Jr at the bridge?
black magic Posted March 10, 2005 Posted March 10, 2005 Studio Mahogany in Natural or Vintage Orange. Jack.

In fact, I would like one of those at some time as well. But for right now, I'm more into the set neck style guitars that Hamer has/had.
hardheartedbill Posted March 11, 2005 Posted March 11, 2005 you can do just about anything on a Mirage II ( thats the Koa ) w/ the right pickup setup, and I like the slightly softer thing that koa does over maples bite , but, the artist mahogany is a great sounding axe, I just can't stand the way they hang on me
Jack C Posted March 11, 2005 Posted March 11, 2005 I'm the only one for the Monaco Elite Mahogany?I'm not sure anyone can comment because I don't know if anyone ever bought one. They're probably great guitars, though...
Hamer95USA Posted March 11, 2005 Posted March 11, 2005 Hello Travis, Since you have quite a number of cool guitars, why not have a Monaco in your collection? It will do the blues, rock and yes, even the shred. You'll miss your whammy bars, but you'll have a nice guitar with a regular tailpiece, two humbuckers and killer tone. I remember you discussing getting a Les Paul on the old message board and I showed my '96 Les Paul Custom to you. Guitar George
sw686blue Posted March 11, 2005 Posted March 11, 2005 I'm on the look out for a Studio Custom with an extreme flame maple top.Nick
Travis Posted March 13, 2005 Author Posted March 13, 2005 Just a bump to see if anyone else has any suggstions.
holLoWskull Posted March 13, 2005 Posted March 13, 2005 Anyone who knows me knows I'm a champion of the Mirage II's. Lockbody has a gorgeous kool blue Mirage II maple top for sale, so you could pick one up and help a fellow HFC brother out at the same time. I'll add my two cents why I think the Mirage II maple is the right choice for you: (1) Hamer ain't makin' them anymore, so the prices will probably keep climbing (slowly) once more people get "hip" to them. You can pick up most of the other guitars brand new if you wanted to down the road. (2) since you seem to like the SD Distortion, the M II maple would fit the bill with a bridge Trembucker spaced Distortion and a neck Distortion (or even Pearly Gates??). The 5-way super switch mod would allow you to even select outer coils only or inner coils only if you wanted some "cleaner" strat or tele-esque sounds, and (3) If you're like me and always kind of liked PRS's but not the price, the Mirage II maple top is about as close as you're gonna come in the production Hamer line. IMHO you get all the quality of a PRS but for 1/2 or 1/3 the price. I use my 96' kool blue Mirage II maple top for everything except country (and when I use outer coils only, it can come close with the 25 1/2" scale), it truly can be a one axe does just about all guitar if set up right.
atquinn Posted March 13, 2005 Posted March 13, 2005 Get an Artist Mahogany. They are criminally undervalued and they sound good doing anything you can throw at them; clean stuff, blues, hard rock, whatever.-Austin

That really gives me a good idea on the Mirage II maple tops, thank you. But would you say that you prefer them over the koa top IIs? If so, why?
hamerhead Posted March 13, 2005 Posted March 13, 2005 What atquinn said - the Artist Mahogany.....because I have a really nice one for sale! Cheap! It covers a lot of ground while maintaining a personality of it's own. I'd keep it but it's a matter of overkill for me. I have like 8 guitars with 'buckers and really don't need all that.
Buster Posted March 16, 2005 Posted March 16, 2005 Even though I just bought an Artist Custom...I am going to have to say that a Monaco III is on my short list...I know it's not on your list, but they're just great tone machines...Erik
Steve Haynie Posted March 16, 2005 Posted March 16, 2005 Go with the koa Mirage if you are looking at getting everything on the list eventually. They are no longer in production, some Hamers are creeping up in price, and the longer you wait there will be fewer nice Mirages to choose from. Over time they will be butchered or beat. Heardheartedbill can give you some pointers on the Mirage.
