velorush Posted April 21, 2011 Posted April 21, 2011 Obviously no affiliation, but thought this might be of interest to the NC folks: INTRODUCTIONThis auction is to liquidate 350+ guitars and equipment from (2) private collections and is being conducted for the United States Federal Bankruptcy Court, John C. Bircher, III & Walter L. Hinson, Trustees. This sale includes a large amount of electric and acoustic collectible guitars. Classic models, re-issues, relics, custom shop specials, autograph, and signature series from Gibson, Fender, Martin, Ibanez, McInturf, ESP, etc… including approximately 100 ‘Les Paul’ Gibsons. The majority of these guitars are unused, many with tags still in place, and some still in the original shipping boxes. All are cased, and have been stored in a climate controlled environment. There are also a small amount of amps, mixers, speakers, monitors, and other equipment that were part of these personal collections. The auction will be held LIVE ONSITE in Washington, NC and LIVE ONLINE via BidSpotter.com. 'Photos' link is dead right now, but they're saying they'll have them up in a bit. I wonder what he did to have the means to buy such a large collection. I'm sorry to see that they will all be sold in his bankruptcy case.

The (mildly condescending) article says that he owns an underground utility.Looks like he is selling everything, even the guitars with the most sentimental value (like his ticket stub/backstage pass Les Paul). I wonder if he sent word to Page that his Led Zep III J-200 was on the block. I wonder, also, if he'd been telling his wife, all along, that all those signature models (if any artist had one, one -or both- of these collectors seems to have purchased one - or three!) and limited editions were being purchased as investments?! Uh-oh! I would've squirreled a few of those guitars away; as noted, he's going to take a bath, anyway - might as well hang on to something.

Things must have gone downhill because all of these guitars are being sold by the trustees of his bankruptcy estate.

Some, like the Playboy Bunny Gibson and Corvette Gibson, are VERY collectible, but others just strike me as meh. Call me jaded, but it seems like a lot of these guitars are 'run of the mill' special editions...kinda like he told his local Guitar Center to save one for him when they came in. I guess we'll find out how much $ an autograph adds to a guitar, too.

Asked and answered!When I was banking entrepreneurs, the last thing I ever wanted to hear about (in order of increasing size of the red flag) was the purchase of: 3. collection of _________ (insert expensive toys dude felt he was denied as a youth - extra red flag points when he/she refers to the purchases as "investments"): cars, guitars, horses (really bad stories on that one), etc. 2. yacht(s) - yes, I can finance it as a second home and you'll get a tax deduction for interest, but it is going to continually cost you way more cash, even when you aren't using it! 1. airplane(s) - the ultimate death knell!
cmatthes Posted April 23, 2011 Posted April 23, 2011 No - I totally understood. Guitars (new) have always been crappy investments. Exceptions would be if you bought 'Bursts or Korina in the late '50s/early '60s. Fools will continue to speculate though.
coolfeel Posted May 1, 2011 Posted May 1, 2011 any deals taken? I stayed far away as a could..... I checked it out online, and although some pieces were priced pretty fair for what they were (celeb owned and/or signed), there werent many deals here IMO. Admittedly, I am not a classic guitar enthusiast, there were no steals that I could see. Did seem a couple of Vs made it out less than a grand but not by much - same with an SG or two. I would not be surprised to see some of those guitars in some music stores with a bit of a mark up on them.
