adferreira Posted September 14, 2005 Posted September 14, 2005 Why plastic cheaper buttons have become a desired feature recently?I guess I'm stuck in the 80's, but we used to pull off that crap and put on big honkin Grovers. Now I see them advertised as if those breakable cheesey looking pieces of plastic are an upscale feature by many makers.Even PRS pulled their awesome tuners and offer the cheapies on their stoptail models? Can somebody explain the attraction?
tafkathundernotes Posted September 14, 2005 Posted September 14, 2005 For me it cut the weight of my headstock by about 1/2 pound. (12ver bass)
Stike Posted September 14, 2005 Posted September 14, 2005 Cuz mother of toilet seat looks way bitchin'.
Scottcrud Posted September 14, 2005 Posted September 14, 2005 anybody make the plastic ones for Sperzal locking 6 inline tuners? I've got a neck heavy custom mockingbird.
Jorge Posted September 14, 2005 Posted September 14, 2005 look good and lightweight, what's not to like?
Guest galejt Posted September 14, 2005 Posted September 14, 2005 Everyone knows they infer maximum tonal mojestic-ness on your fiddlestick.Greg told me to say that.

elduave Posted September 14, 2005 Posted September 14, 2005 I think they look cool but weight is the key. Ebony's even cooler!
pesocaster Posted September 14, 2005 Posted September 14, 2005 I think they look cool but weight is the key. Ebony's even cooler! And just where would some one acquire such Ebony tuning pegs? And, How much? Those would look cool on a couple black guitars I have....
tomteriffic Posted September 14, 2005 Posted September 14, 2005 The pearloid Imperial buttons look right on my Newport, but I've got ebony ones on a couple of others.Edit to add: I got mine at AllParts
elduave Posted September 14, 2005 Posted September 14, 2005 I got mine at AllParts There you go Peso. I don't stock them but I'm happy to hunt them down if you strike out, or someone else here may have them.

MUCH better price!
tomteriffic Posted September 14, 2005 Posted September 14, 2005 Heads-up PesoRob. Make sure you get the buttons for the right brand. Grover buttons won't work on Schallers and vice-versa. Or the other way 'round either. Tha's why i wound up getting them from AllParts. Stwemac didn't have what I needed for my brand.

silentman Posted September 14, 2005 Posted September 14, 2005 Be careful, even within the same brand. I bought schaller minis once for my studio. The minis are only used on the 6 in-line headstocks.
MCChris Posted September 14, 2005 Posted September 14, 2005 And just where would some one acquire such Ebony tuning pegs? And, How much? Those would look cool on a couple black guitars I have.... If they ever make "mother of nutsack" tuning pegs you can pop a set on the Pesocaster to match the pickguard!

Man... and I was going for more of the Waylon Jennings Leather on the guitar thing.... I plan on stitching around the edge of the guard... might have to rethink this... hahahha...
Steve Haynie Posted September 14, 2005 Posted September 14, 2005 The first person I saw changing tuner buttons on his Hamer was doing it initially to cut down some weight, and it looked cool, too. If you can cut out a quarter of a pound to half a pound of weight on an instrument that is ten pounds or less, it is a significant amount.
DaveH Posted September 14, 2005 Posted September 14, 2005 The first person I saw changing tuner buttons on his Hamer was doing it initially to cut down some weight, and it looked Steve,That wasn't by any chance Richie, was it?I'll have to say +1 on the weight AND the appearance.....pearloids are cool!
adferreira Posted September 15, 2005 Author Posted September 15, 2005 Lighter headstock = better tone. Lighter headstock = increased chance of deadspots? What about the fatfinger?
BCR Greg Posted September 15, 2005 Posted September 15, 2005 Lighter headstock has no affect on deadspots.Fatfingers just change the resonant frequency of the guitar, moving any dead spot to a new area.I have bought a huge number of old Gibson Juniors that had Grovers or Schallers added after the original tuners went bad. Merely returning the guitars to stock by putting on proper lightwight tuners enhances the tone remarkably.Everyone has a theory. Trust who you choose to trust.
hamerhead Posted September 15, 2005 Posted September 15, 2005 >putting on proper lightwight tuners enhances the tone <The old-strip-style tuners that are on my Junior (with the thinner headstock) must do SOMETHING! That thing rips!
