79adam79 Posted May 1, 2012 Posted May 1, 2012 Hey. I'm looking for an '80s Hamer Phantom, A5 or A7. Preferably one with minimal fretwear. I'm located in Boston.Thanks,-Adam
79adam79 Posted May 8, 2012 Author Posted May 8, 2012 This one was just listed, but it's a it priceyYeah, I noticed that one.. $900 is overpriced. Is there a bluebook value for these? I was talking with someone and they told me that, in their opinon, the Phantoms made before '85 (the ones with 3 tuning pegs per side) are superior to the later models with the 6 pegs on one side. I haven't had a chance to try both models, so I was interested in what other people think about this..Thanks,-Adam
Andrew Posted May 8, 2012 Posted May 8, 2012 3+3 are from 82 to mid 84. Those with sustain block trems have huge base-ball bat mahogany necks, hardtails have much smaller necks. From mid 84 they go 6-a-side, usually maple necks but the very earliest ones are still mahogany. The necks tend to be flatter and almost all guitars are Kahler fitted (occaissional floyd or hardtail). The GT is the single bridge humbucker version.Which is best? - you have to chose for yourself. The sustain block trem and the Kahler are acquired tastes but both will function well once you get the setup right.
crunchee Posted May 8, 2012 Posted May 8, 2012 Blue Book value for USA Hamers isn't what I'd call 'accurate' market value. Though that could probably be said for nearly ANY less than well-known guitar maker they list.
serial Posted May 8, 2012 Posted May 8, 2012 The 6 in line ones have always been more desirable I think. At least in terms of how quickly they move. I've owned both and like the 6 in lines with Kahlers the best.
GusS Posted May 8, 2012 Posted May 8, 2012 It seems to me that the only people who will put up with Kahlers or Floyds are metal players. The Police vs Judas Prieststrat vs super strat

This guitar has a mahogany neck and the sound can't be beat. Nothing I have owned compares to it. Only reason I am selling it is because of the thin neck. I have big hands and most of my guitars have necks on the thicker side. If I played it everday then I am sure I would love the thin neck. I just do not have the time to get used to it.
serial Posted May 9, 2012 Posted May 9, 2012 I wouldn't let go of my 85 Phantom for $900. One of the best guitars I've ever owned. Was my main gig guitar from the day I got it in 2005 until last May.
rj2858 Posted May 9, 2012 Posted May 9, 2012 Sold my Ice Pearl / black pickguard '84 ( 3+3 headstock, sustain block trem, in near Mint condition) back in mid '05 via 'Feebay', and got over $900 for itGreat neck, loved the p'ups, had no problem with the sustain block vibrato, but even as a devout 'Strat' guy, I didn't get used to the body early on (bought it brand new in early '87 from Mak'n Music in Chicago), and she spent most of her life with me sleeping in her case.
polara Posted May 9, 2012 Posted May 9, 2012 My A5 is absolutely killer. But I don't need the A7... I don't use the Roland stuff (though honestly the Kahler works great.) I just need to photograph it in case anyone wants to buy it...
andrew m Posted May 9, 2012 Posted May 9, 2012 Why were you sleeping in a guitar case? lol

rj2858 Posted May 9, 2012 Posted May 9, 2012 Why were you sleeping in a guitar case?It was just so cozy in there!OK - "she spent most of her life with me, (comma!) sleeping in her case"
racingfan23 Posted May 12, 2012 Posted May 12, 2012 I think it is safe to say that $900 for a 85 Phantom is a bargin. Winning bid was $1335.
devrock Posted May 16, 2012 Posted May 16, 2012 Once I get my hands on one I will never let it go.This. One of my life goals is to own a GT.
QueenCityGuitars Posted June 7, 2012 Posted June 7, 2012 Adam - I have a 1987 Phantom GT that I custom ordered from Lisa Sharken at Sam Ash in Manhattan. It's black with a factory Floyd Rose (black), no pickguard, Strat output jack, and LED frets. It's in player condition, and has a fair amount of bumps and bruises, but plays and sounds great. It's absolutely a one-of-a kind Phantom. I'm a new member here, but have bought and sold lots of guitars on Birds and Moons (the old PRS forum). GC Ron here can vouch for me. Shoot me a PM if you're interested. Thanks,Bryan

devrock Posted June 7, 2012 Posted June 7, 2012 Bryan, that's crazy! But is it a GT with the triplebucker?
