cmatthes Posted October 6, 2005 Posted October 6, 2005 The back binding is also definitely Gretsch-like. The next one will have to be a "White Falconesque" Newport w/Trons. Gotta hook 'em up with some gold sparkle nitron binding stock for that I guess. That would require some significant financial manuvering though, so maybe in a few years?!
Jack C Posted October 6, 2005 Posted October 6, 2005 Bad Ass!! So Chris, did you find out whether the top was maple or spruce?
Stike Posted October 7, 2005 Posted October 7, 2005 FUH-UCK! Green's for da money and da gold's for da honnies.

elduave Posted October 7, 2005 Author Posted October 7, 2005 Captain FantasticRaised and regemented Hardly a hero Just someone his mother might know Very clearly a case for corn flakes and classics "Two teas both with sugar please" In the back of an alley While little Dirt Cowboys turned brown in their saddles Sweet chocolate biscuits and red rosy apples in summer For it's hay make and "Hey mom, do the papers say anything good. Are there chances in life for little Dirt Cowboys Should I make my way out of my home in the woods" Brown Dirt Cowboy, still green and growing City slick Captain Fantastic the feedback The honey the hive could be holding For there's weak winged young sparrows that starve in the winter Broken young children on the wheels of the winners And the sixty-eight summer festival wallflowers are thinning For cheap easy meals and hardly a home on the range Too hot for the band with a desperate desire for change We've thrown in the towel too many times Out for the count and when we're down Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy From the end of the world to your town And all this talk of Jesus coming back to see us Couldn't fool us For we were spinning out our lines walking on the wire Hand in hand went music and the rhyme The Captain and the Kid stepping in the ring From here on sonny sonny sonny, it's a long and lonely climb
belgian Posted October 7, 2005 Posted October 7, 2005 Pick-ups ?The standard set or something special ,?????
jwhitcomb3 Posted October 7, 2005 Posted October 7, 2005 I love that song. Been playing it as part of my acoustic duo gig for years and it always gets a good response.-Jonathan
elduave Posted October 7, 2005 Author Posted October 7, 2005 Belg-Standard pickupsJWhit-Do you play it by ear or did you use a cheat sheet (tab or whatever)? I learned it by ear and had to make up some chords as I went along. I'd be curious what it looks like on paper.
Guest cruster Posted October 8, 2005 Posted October 8, 2005 This one's fer Stike: Someone Photoshop that in orange sparkle with two Filtertrons, ebony bridge with gold tailpiece (no bigsby...ugh) for me!

I learned it by ear and had to make up some chords as I went along. I'd be curious what it looks like on paper. Just by ear, and there are some fun chords: a C with an E in the bass (0-3-2-0-1-0), a D7b9 (x-6-7-5-7-5) and a neat little chord I don't know the name of in that "For Cheap Easy Meals" bit where you slide up from the Eminor to 0-5-5-0-0-0, and all kinds of cool little fills.-Jonathan
kizanski Posted October 9, 2005 Posted October 9, 2005 Great looking M3, Chris and Dave. God knows I had a love/hate relationship with mine, but I still miss it. I'm curious to hear what you think of it after some amplifier time with it. As for "The Best Gretsch Ever," well, we'll just have to see about that.

elduave Posted October 15, 2005 Author Posted October 15, 2005 Tone ReportThings I dug-The in-between (2&4 positions) on all channels, especially clean. Bell tones, spanky spank tones, very chimey, useable sounds. My favorite thing abut the guitar for sure. Also dug the bridge pup by itself, especially on the lead channel (TSL601). Great sounds all around when lowering the guitar volume a bit.Not so much-The middle pup. Just too loud and gritty. It got much better once I lowered the pup further away from the strings. Not having played a spruce top model, I can't do the maple vs spruce call. It didn't seem "overly" bright to me though. I'd say best results would be with a Fender amp and a player that plays jazzier/bluesier stuff. I lean more towards the "fuse the notes together with lotso gain" sound. YMMV.
