diablo175 Posted October 28, 2012 Posted October 28, 2012 Someone sent this to me and after reading the description, I decided to steer clear. Gotta wonder why he photoshopped the serial number out. Now, if it had reverse head stock, I'd buy as it'd be going for paint and new guts anyway...Cali abomination
Rebeka Posted October 28, 2012 Posted October 28, 2012 It's not that uncommon really. Some people are very paranoid about posting serial #'s online. Never had it happen to me, but apparently some scammers like to take note of the serial and description and turn around and report it as stolen. Personally, I can't imagine it works out for the scammer very often, but if you aren't the kind of person who saves every receipt, I can see why you wouldn't want to risk someone trying it on you.
diablo175 Posted October 28, 2012 Author Posted October 28, 2012 Hmm. Never thought of that... seems kinda ballsy...and risky. If the owner DOES have proof of purchase, couldn't that end up being a problem for the scammer?
MCChris Posted October 28, 2012 Posted October 28, 2012 Q: Good morning, do you still have the original bridge pick up ?A: The original bridge pickup is installed.Duncan didn't put logos on their pickups in 1989, did they?
Bennyboy-UK Posted October 28, 2012 Posted October 28, 2012 This one was on a while ago... Looks like a bit of a wreck... In fact I think it even got sold...can't remember exactly. There were were a few things that made it feel like a bit of a hefty job to sort it properly... Not for someone like you though! You're not afraid of doing major Cali surgery
Rebeka Posted October 28, 2012 Posted October 28, 2012 Hmm. Never thought of that... seems kinda ballsy...and risky. If the owner DOES have proof of purchase, couldn't that end up being a problem for the scammer?Seems that way to me too. But then again, most criminals aren't very bright.
Victor (Fret Friend) Posted October 28, 2012 Posted October 28, 2012 Yeah, this has been on eBay a few timesHaha @ 'original pickup' FFS
cmatthes Posted October 28, 2012 Posted October 28, 2012 Agreed - that one has been on eBay at least 4-5 times. Something is fishy (besides the clearly non-original bridge pickup)...
analogsystem Posted October 28, 2012 Posted October 28, 2012 This one would be appealing as refinished guitars that lack their original pickups / bridge saddles can sometimes be great players at good prices. Why did he send the neck back to Hamer for inspection? Truss not working? That is a big question mark in my book. Its getting a bit pricey considering there may or may not be issues with it. Assuming it plays and sounds the way other Californians do it could still be radical.....but there is definitely an element of "rolling the dice" for whoever wins it
analogsystem Posted October 28, 2012 Posted October 28, 2012 Also....how does one replace a fender style 3-way with a gibson style 3-way? It must have been filled and re-drilled when the guitar was refinished. That seems weird
diablo175 Posted October 28, 2012 Author Posted October 28, 2012 Yup. Toggle switch is definitely NOT original issue. I actually don't mind the toggle 3 way, I've done that mod to 3 Cali's and one Diablo, thus far. But the logo-ed SD p'up is a red flag, as is the tone knob. Elites did not have a tone knob, as far as I know... even one from '89.
veatch Posted October 29, 2012 Posted October 29, 2012 My '89 with OBLs had a tone pot. Actually, i've seen a few OBL equipped Cali's with a tone pot, so that doesn't seem too odd. Now, many here would argue a tone pot on a Cali is just plain wrong for other reasons... Edited to add pic - note the placement of the tone pot in the pic below (optional config from Hamer) vs the placement of the one in the add...):
veatch Posted October 29, 2012 Posted October 29, 2012 Looking at the pics on something better than a phone, the only thing that bothers me besides the 3 way toggle is:1> Looks like a refin (paint on neck plate makes me think it's likely not a pro job)2> Control route was f'd with - see how poorly the cover plate fits in the back shot - looks like a hammer and chisel job... :/The neck, pups, and Floyd ain't worth what it's at right now, but that's just my opinion
veatch Posted October 29, 2012 Posted October 29, 2012 Also - is the neck laminate at the neck pocket cracking?

stratacus Posted October 29, 2012 Posted October 29, 2012 I would avoid buying anything from this seller. I won an eBay auction for a Hamer Studio from him over a year ago and he refused to sell it for the winning bid. He said it was no longer available and had been sold locally...but then changed his story and indicated he would sell it to me for more money. Fu*k that noise.
Victor (Fret Friend) Posted October 29, 2012 Posted October 29, 2012 ^^^ I had a guy pull the same trick on me with an Ibanez RG I won for like $100...
FrankieIII Posted October 29, 2012 Posted October 29, 2012 "I sent this neck to Hamer for inspection and adjustment. Kim Keller at Hamer told me they now charge $2600 to make JUST the neck."WTF???
stratacus Posted October 29, 2012 Posted October 29, 2012 ^^^ I had a guy pull the same trick on me with an Ibanez RG I won for like $100...My winning bid was $720 and the auction ran for the full week.
Steve Haynie Posted October 29, 2012 Posted October 29, 2012 The guitar just sold for $839 and now the neck is up with a photo of the full guitar with a Buy It Now for $715. Run away! Run away!

Run away! +1 I read all the way down thru the BS and he does say he wants to use certain parts from this Cali for his Chap project but there are so many f-ed up red flags in that (including my fave- wants to use a Cali neck on a Chap body and it will fit. Is this true?) He's throwing in the body for FREE! Ooh! The ebony board with mop boomers is rarest of these fine necks... really? In what alternate universe? My guess is the problem bidder he didn't block was one who pointed out the inconsistencies and out right fabrication of truth in his auction description.

The current auction was started 23 minutes after the last ended. His "problem" bidder was in fact his "shill" bidder.
