To their point(s), these are not full-blown customs, but are a repeatable process/production with very limited options. The intent has always been pretty clear that Mike is making the absolute BEST guitar you'll be able to get, but in order to keep the pricing where it is, the idea is to not load him down with little tweaks, like changed hardware, different scale lengths, different body woods, getting colors to match your Granny's favorite chair cover, etc. All of those things were not factored into the original pricing, so IF he's able to do any of that for this first run, it'll be at an upcharge/at your additional expense, and subject to Mike's discretion.

The idea is also not to delay things by going back and forth with tweaks and different ideas, like you would on a full blown custom order. These are going to be superior to anything else in that price range, so the idea is to not tie the artist up and pull him away from building these instruments by answering a million questions or tire-kicking options around. Mike is more than generous with his time and is extremely responsive, but let's remember the idea behind this first run!

I don't think anybody will have to worry about anything Mike builds not exceeding their every expectation.

That's certainly the way I saw it, and a big reason I'm kicking myself for not selling a kidney so I could get on the first run. Standards aren't really my thing, but this is just an insane deal for what it is. To be honest I'm pretty sure I won't be able to afford a Shishkov when they are in full "production", unless there was another run like this. Given that the first(and extended) run were designed to bootstrap Mike's company, I don't see him doing a third (or with different bodies). So here I sit, bummed. :(

If anyone bitches about their color afterwards, sell the darn thing to someone who missed out :P

I know that Mike has been putting some thought into the whole "working man's guitar" concept very seriously, so I wouldn't count yourself out of a Shishkov just yet.

Does that mean the Milller guitars are coming back?

I'd buy a Natty Boh guitar in a hearbeat!

In retrospect, his initiation and participation in the long-running "Working Man's Guitar" thread (while Hamer was in custom-only mode) is interesting.

Hmmmmmmmm.... :)

That being said, in a general address to the HFC community - PLEASE don't take this as your cue to try to design your dream cheap-o guitar by committee.

We'll just delete those threads because they serve no purpose, go absolutely nowhere, and confuse the hell out of things. Let Mike do what he does best. If he decides that he is looking for input, believe me - he'll ask!

1. certainly not trying to incite a [virtual] riot

2. I do believe the linked thread did an exhaustive job of running through possibilities (and impossibilities).

Most of my guitars look like they were in a demolition derby. I don't even look at color when I buy a guitar, and I was a freakin' visual communications major and award-winning creative director. I just want it to play great. I chose natural to keep it simple.

Mike, FOR THE RECORD: IF YOU LOOK AT THE TOP ON NUMBER 21 AND YOU THINK IT SHOULD BE VINTAGE NATURAL, TOBACCO BURST, OPAQUE GREEN, OR METALFLAKE SIENNA DIAPERBURST, FEEL FREE TO SPRAY IT WITH ANYTHING YOU WANT. YOU'RE LOOKING AT THE WOOD, NOT ME. FOLLOW YOUR MUSE.

I've also told Mike to choose my finish.

Easy for a guy this is going to get one in every color anyway.

Good point

...except that that post was two full years after Hamer was officially out of business!

Why do you suppose he brought it up then?

And that is what I find interesting.

Mike is a visionary.
