BTMN Posted December 15, 2014 Posted December 15, 2014 Any chance we can see an approximation of what the Ultimate's finish options might look like? Many thanks in advance and no rush.
cmatthes Posted December 16, 2014 Posted December 16, 2014 Not at that point yet...Patience, young Gene!
BTMN Posted December 16, 2014 Author Posted December 16, 2014 I chose Vintage Natural but have been Thinking about Bright Trans Red, NOT Cherry Red, Red Red. With a Natural colored back. Since I am #16 I figure I need to do that very soon but IF Vintage Natural looks good I would stick with the basics as I have so far.
DaveL Posted December 16, 2014 Posted December 16, 2014 good question, yes, I'd like to see the differences between the natural and amber when they are available...
Feynman Posted December 16, 2014 Posted December 16, 2014 I don't plan to order anything, but I would love to see color samples in all available finishes, on flamed and quilted maple, spruce and mahogany blanks. I intend to criticize them on the Internet.
bubs_42 Posted December 16, 2014 Posted December 16, 2014 I've said it once and i'll say it again. I'm getting way more guitar than I paid for. I fully intend on not badgering Mike about shades, tweaks or twists. I'm 100% sure I won't be let down on the out come this masterpiece.
cmatthes Posted December 16, 2014 Posted December 16, 2014 good question, yes, I'd like to see the differences between the natural and amber when they are available... Natural is a clear finish - basically, you'll see the wood as it would look with a swipe of naptha, just really glossy. Amber is an aged, yellowed finish - there are yellow toners in the color coat that will be somewhere between trans yellow and a deeper gold/amber finish. Amber is this: Vintage Natural is this:

cmatthes Posted December 16, 2014 Posted December 16, 2014 I agree with Kiz and the Bubs-man here.To their point(s), these are not full-blown customs, but are a repeatable process/production with very limited options. The intent has always been pretty clear that Mike is making the absolute BEST guitar you'll be able to get, but in order to keep the pricing where it is, the idea is to not load him down with little tweaks, like changed hardware, different scale lengths, different body woods, getting colors to match your Granny's favorite chair cover, etc. All of those things were not factored into the original pricing, so IF he's able to do any of that for this first run, it'll be at an upcharge/at your additional expense, and subject to Mike's discretion. The idea is also not to delay things by going back and forth with tweaks and different ideas, like you would on a full blown custom order. These are going to be superior to anything else in that price range, so the idea is to not tie the artist up and pull him away from building these instruments by answering a million questions or tire-kicking options around. Mike is more than generous with his time and is extremely responsive, but let's remember the idea behind this first run!I don't think anybody will have to worry about anything Mike builds not exceeding their every expectation.
velorush Posted December 16, 2014 Posted December 16, 2014 ^^^ Thanks for that. I know now I had lost sight of the original intent (your paragraph two). Fact is, as it stands I am currently signed up for Mike's interpretation of "Darkburst (tobacco)." I will be curious (when the time eventually comes) to see what he envisions as "Darkburst (tobacco)." If our interpretations agree, fine. If not, I'm sure another of the stock options will be great. This is actually quite freeing, if you think about it!
Feynman Posted December 16, 2014 Posted December 16, 2014 I agree with Kiz and the Bubs-man here.Harumph.
polara Posted December 16, 2014 Posted December 16, 2014 Most of my guitars look like they were in a demolition derby. I don't even look at color when I buy a guitar, and I was a freakin' visual communications major and award-winning creative director. I just want it to play great. I chose natural to keep it simple. Mike, FOR THE RECORD: IF YOU LOOK AT THE TOP ON NUMBER 21 AND YOU THINK IT SHOULD BE VINTAGE NATURAL, TOBACCO BURST, OPAQUE GREEN, OR METALFLAKE SIENNA DIAPERBURST, FEEL FREE TO SPRAY IT WITH ANYTHING YOU WANT. YOU'RE LOOKING AT THE WOOD, NOT ME. FOLLOW YOUR MUSE.

cmatthes Posted December 16, 2014 Posted December 16, 2014 I'm thinking Metalflake Sienna Diaperburst should be a stock finish...

Feynman Posted December 17, 2014 Posted December 17, 2014 If I did that, it would end up red with gold hardware. You people are nuts.
HSB0531 Posted December 17, 2014 Posted December 17, 2014 I'm thinking Dan Armstrong Clear Plexi with clear plexi binding, clear bell knobs and pickup bobbins
