serial Posted March 23, 2015 Posted March 23, 2015 Great price. Too bad it's a later 22fret one. Made with imported parts (not USA). You can snag a good one (the price is worth the shot), but they don't hold a candle to the 1985 and earlier ones imho.
Jake8773 Posted March 23, 2015 Posted March 23, 2015 I concur, this is a texas era Schecter, quality was not the same -more like cheapo peavey USA made guitars. Hit or miss miss miss miss, you get it. My rule of thumb is avoid US made schecters that do not have the California shape etched in the back plate.
serial Posted March 23, 2015 Posted March 23, 2015 The first year or so of the Texas ones were typically excellent. A guy I knew in college played for a NC band that had some MTV and college radio success had an 85. He ordered another one when they started selling records (late 86/early 87) and it was a dog. I've owned two '85s that are among the best bolt-neck guitars I've owned, but I've also owned a lousy '85/86 22 fretter. The other 22 fretter that I had wasn't horrible but it wasn't close to the 85s. The one I have now blows away any I've picked up-even the new US Custom Shop Schecters with the ugly headstocks. If you can find a 21 fretter from 85, go for it. At $650, you'll get imported parts, but it could be a good one. At that price, it wouldn't be tough to flip.
it's me HHB Posted March 23, 2015 Posted March 23, 2015 I have a fantastic early tx strat style, a guitar I've played almost 20 years now
HamerHamburg Posted March 23, 2015 Posted March 23, 2015 A Tom Anderson era USA Schecter Tele recently sold on eBay Germany for €1990 = approx. $2150. Would not have thought they go that high... I had a early 80s Texas PT with Japanese Parts (verified not to be a Tom Anderson by the man himself. A nice guy and answers emails promptly and nicely). Great guitar with an insanely flamed/quilted maple neck (actually really the best flame/quilt I might have ever seen ..). Sold it a few years back to buy a hand made 1985 Dommenget Strat (which is up for sale now too...). Oh man, all those guitars ... Cheers Todde
serial Posted March 23, 2015 Posted March 23, 2015 Starting in mid-85, the bodies and necks were imported ESP stuff iirc. The ones I have and had from before that were completely different (and better).
velorush Posted March 24, 2015 Posted March 24, 2015 Help! Help! Is THIS what I'm looking for? 21 fret, black PT for $1,000?
velorush Posted March 24, 2015 Posted March 24, 2015 Well worn, but appears whole. Have it in hand. Neck's a bit small for my taste but a very resonant guitar. OHSC at Carter's, Nash Vegas.
velorush Posted March 24, 2015 Posted March 24, 2015 "OHSC," but I didn't see it. Likely some room on it. Guy shot himself in the foot. I was really considering it when another salesman says, have you tried the Suhr (Tele)? It was twice the price, but there was no going back after that.
ARM OF HAMER Posted March 24, 2015 Posted March 24, 2015 Thats not all that worn..........................but this one is...............Early Schecter.
murkat Posted March 24, 2015 Posted March 24, 2015 Guy shot himself in the foot.yeah, that's Carter's for ya. Been there, done that.they have a wreck of an Early 70's LPC, white (yellowed) in there with a 5 piece butcher block top. omg what a wreck, big coin.Wish I knew your in town Velo.....
velorush Posted March 24, 2015 Posted March 24, 2015 Figured you were extra busy just getting cranked back up and all. Didn't want to slow you down. Wife's in town for a seminar. I tagged along to loiter and ogle guitars. Fun day. Saw a yellowed LPC at Carter's. Big scrape on the lower horn (appeared white)? Just not my thing. But the two Suhrs (vintage S and T) were spectacular. Nice people there. Skewing the thread even further, I was in Corner Music as they took delivery of the first ever LsL P Bass. It was astounding - if it weren't beat up I'd probably have had to have bought it!
kizanski Posted March 25, 2015 Posted March 25, 2015 Thats not all that worn..........................but this one is...............Early Schecter. Exactly my point. Not gonna pay $1000 for a dinged up Dallas era PT, but a Van Nuys is a different story.
velorush Posted March 25, 2015 Posted March 25, 2015 So how to tell the difference between CA and TX era 21-fretter?
kizanski Posted March 25, 2015 Posted March 25, 2015 The control layout is the most obvious difference.
serial Posted March 25, 2015 Posted March 25, 2015 THIS is what you want. A-**** serial number on the plate probably below 1100(?). Early neck pocket from TX when they still took enough pride to sign the cavities. I tracked down one of the guys who signed the neck pocket and he gave me a lot of info on the TX Schecters. That one in TN looks a lot like one I used to own that was really good, but the saddles look different (hard to see what's on there-they look odd).
velorush Posted March 25, 2015 Posted March 25, 2015 I've reread this several times and I THINK I understand. To summarize: the most desirable examples have the shape of California stamped in the neck plate and a normal Tele control plate, 21 frets. The next most desirable, made in Texas, maintain 21 frets, but have the control panel as the Nashville example I found yesterday and like Serial's example, above. The least desirable of the three are the 22-fret guitars. I think that's what has been posted. I watched the "Eminence Front" video again last night and saw his had exposed pole pieces on the pickups, as well (as does the well worn photo someone posted).
