What brand and gauge are the stock strings on the Ultimate?

I'm guessing .010 - .046 and nickel wrap.

Am I right?

Not D'Addarios because they don't have rainbow balls and they don't suck. ;)

LOL, strings are a personal item. I would send my guitars to BCR with a Pack of Slinkys in the case and it would come back with D'Addarios, then I started using D'Addarios. So when I was sending guitars to Jay I would send them with D'Addarios and the guitar would come back with Slinky's.

Lol Mike told me they were D'Addario 10s....

I currently have a set of Dean Markley 1973s on it.....I wish they kept making those....

I have a couple set of EB Cobalts waiting.....

Ouch. For the record, I like XLs. :)

:blink::wacko::blink:

I have never had an issue with the D'Addario strings. I like them.

My experience with XLs has not been good. They sound too bright immediately out of the bag, then quickly get dull and flat. They also seem to take forever to stretch out.

I like the sound of pure nickel wrap strings better.

YMMV

I think maybe I'm a non-sweater or really alkaline or base or such. D'Addario XL 10s are my default except on the Strat, which takes Fender Bullet 09s 'cos for some weird reason that guitar just sings with those strings.

D'Addario XL 10's - yup. That's it.

I proto'd the pickups and crosschecked across multiple gauges and brands - D'Addario, GHS, Ernie Ball, and DR ...9's, 10's, 11's, and yes...12's!

My personal favorites on 24.75" scale instruments are 11's. The 'hog proto guitar totally rips with that gauge on there and the added tension means that the string doesn't vibrate as drastically: I can make the neck straighter, get the action lower, and damn...it just sounds ballsy! A set of 12's with a dialed-in setup will absolutely roar. Try it sometime. :)

I like 10's on Fenders tho. The GHS 10.5's on a Strat or Tele, for me, are golden.

I think my Artist needs 0.11s. Hrm.

Thanks for the explaination and follow-up Badger! So that is why my tone consistently sucks! ^_^

Update - nope that is not why my tone sucks!

Cmatthes said something about practicing recently, maybe I will give that a try.

That's not it, you need another guitar, pedal or amp that makes everything better. ;)

You may be right.

I'm sure I'd like the XLs better if they had seafoam balls.

Sounds like Greg likes the slinkys, so he swapped them for D'Addarios and Jay is the opposite ;)

I keep sticking to that formula and it so far it hasn't helped much! :)
