Any numismatists here?

Ting Ho Dung

Question

Posted

I have about a dozen Morgan Dollars. Don't know how to grade them. If I were to PM you a photo would you be able to give me the grade and value of them? I took my best one to a local shop and the asshole offered me $16 for it which I assume is melt value. He didn't look up the date or anything. Just turned his back on me and walked away. I'm pretty sure that one is worth around a hundie but the others I have are worth much less but I'm sure all are worth more than $16.

I collected when I was a kid. I have some stuff in a safe at my ex wife's house to go to my son, (which I'm sure is

totally still there lol).

That said, that price seems low, like anything, he's paying so that he can mark up and

sell... post a pics and also, look for any mint marks, (think carson city might be the good one)

BTW: ebay may suck, but without it you'd be stuck dealing with a guy like this guy... you have other

options to sell.

Was a numie for quite a while as a kid and still get sucked back in occasionally, but I'm by no means an expert on grading.

Date, condition and mint mark all make a big difference in value. And very small variations in condition can have a huge effect once you start getting to the upper reaches of the condition scale. In any event, even for the most common dates/mint marks, $16.00 is above current melt value but not much. With that many, it may be worth your while (and expense) to get them graded by a reputable service.

For example, I have a Morgan that is graded AU 56. That is getting up toward the top of the heap, which is AU58 or 60, depending on who you ask. Long story. To get to AU 58 for the same date/mint would have cost me more than twice as much.

Here's a good guide to gradings and their meanings.

A lot of numies still rely on the old fair-good-fine-excellent, etc. system, but the MS/AU system is a more defined standard.

You could always go to a coin show once you've done your grading research, and see what the market will bear there. It might be as bad as going to a guitar show, though. B)

No show is as bad as a recent guitar show. Junk and more junk.

Funny.....when I was a kid I collected a bit.

Your post reminded me of when we were in 7th grade shop class and they taught us how to make rubber stamps, I made one with my name on it that had " Numistmatist" under it.....and not a single kid in school knew what that was. :)

Whenever I think about shifting some savings into goid coins, I always end up thinking if the $hit hits the fan and we're throwing away fiat currency who am I going to sell gold to in the first place? Guys like your local shopkeeper. I'd just get scalped anyway.

Nah, we already know what'll get used. Bottle caps!!

For those that don't recognize it, there's a game series called Fallout. Takes place after a bad nuclear war, with most survivors having been in Vaults, safe from the nukes. The currency settled on by the survivors is bottle caps.

I found a guy who gave me an honest price for 11 of them yesterday. Sure he'll mark them up a few dollars but that's business and I don't have any ebay fees. Thanks for all your helpses.
