Funny Legal Question

I am a 41 year old white male. My mom was 14 1/2 when I was born. I have been William Hook, named after my grandfather on my dad's side. when I moved here to TX I had to renew my driver's license and had show my birth certificate. I had to request a copy of my birth certificate and found my name was misspelled on my birth certificate(thanks mom) so I request papers for a name change form and they are asking for all this paperwork from when I was a kid pre-10yr. My mom has nothing like this, I had to request a birth certificate which is how this mess got started in the first place.

Has anyone here had to deal with something like this?

advice?

It is in the state of WI if that is important 

and for laughs, is it "Willaim" on the NEW birth certificate

Shoot, if you HAVE to change it, make it something interesting. "Captain" would be a good first name!

When I worked in theatre, a stage manager there was getting her Equity card, and had to choose another name since someone else had her name, both first and last were pretty common names.  She chose Captain to go in front of her name and I always chuckled seeing it on the posting in the lobby and in the programs.

Back when I was in high school, there was a guy in my hometown that had the moniker 'E. Pluribus Whiteside', I kid you not.  Or at least that's what my hometown newspaper's 'Court Report' would give when he got arrested.  He used to get hauled in for public drunkenness fairly frequently, I guess (at least, judging by the regularity that his name showed up in the paper).  I dunno what happened to him, but with a name like that, who could blame him for getting drunk?

I also served with a guy back in my Air Force days, whose last name was Sargent.  His rank?  Sergeant of course, this was back when the AF still had Buck Sergeants too.

A friend whose parents were named Bowens had his name misspelled Bowen on his birth certificate.  I was acquainted with a brother and sister named Parsons and Parson because of a misspelling on a birth certificate.  Charlie Daniels should have the last name Daniel. 

You might be stuck, Willaim.

that's what I am trying to figure out, I'm not sure what is more do-able. I either have to change ANY and ALL legal documents with my name on it, or find a way to fix my birth certificate.......and I have a kick-ass credit score

Just let them spell it as it is on the birth certificate.  Leave everything else the same.

It seems to me you could spell your name "William" as much as you want, except for "official" legal documents such as driver's license, Soc-Sec, passport, wedding license, etc. A lot of celebrities do it all the time.

Is your name misspelled on your Social Security Card?  That's what you don't want them to muck with.  Everything is tied to that number, not the spelling of your name.

I'm sot sure about the SS card. i remember needing it whem i enrolled in college.  i can't remember what i did back then.

i'm gonna double check my birth certificate. i had to request a copy when i renewed my drivers livcense. Maybe the typo happened on this new copy. i appreciate the humor in this. My wife, not so much

The Social Security card thing is no problem.  Just call your local office and tell them you lost your card.  Never tell them it was stolen.  They'll get you a new one.  Some states require you go there in person.  I think how your name's spelled at the SSA will answer all your questions.  If your original birth certificate is misspelled, your name with the SSA will, most likely, be misspelled.  If your SSA info is correct, you'll have to decide if you want to dance through all the hoops to fix your birth certificate.  Your birth certificate is really only important when you secure a state identification or driver's license. You'll also need it, if you're going to play Little League baseball or Pop Warner football! 

It might be easier to not be "Will-I-Am".
