Storing extra pickups

Question

Hey, does anybody know if I can store all my extra guitar pickups in a metal filing cabinet or is that frowned upon due to possible magnetic/degaussing issues?

I put my extra’s in those small fishing tackle containers. Cheap storage boxes!!

Yeah I was organizing all my pedals, cables, strings and miscellaneous guitar stuff and had an empty 2 drawer metal filing cabinet... it's the perfect size, it locks and conveniently pulls out with nice sliders... I think if I 1st put the pickups in a cardboard box, it'll be safe to put them in there~

I wouldn’t worry at all doing it. What should happen in what time?

I was thinking that perhaps the magnets would transfer their magnetic properties over to the filing cabinet...

Magnets that are not protected from outside magnetic fields may fall prey to loss of magnetic charge Certain magnets are more susceptible to this effect, such as Alnico...

Storing loose in a filing cabinet won't degauss the magnets as long as there's not a high-energy magnetic source in there with them such as neodymium magnets. Do not keep them on top or in the back of a guitar/bass amplifier because the output transformer can degauss and definitely don't store pickups within 6-8ft of an industrial magnet charger! I have one of those and learned that lesson early on. :)

I store pickups in those plastic fishing lure containers like Dutchman mentioned, far away and clear from any of the aforementioned items - never a problem.

I keep mine either in plastic (Duncan) boxes or wrapped in tissue paper in a cardboard box.  They're all in a wire basket/bin, nothing gets any closer than about 1/4" to any metal.  No problems that I'm aware of.

HOWEVER:  Most Esteemed Redhead is under orders to move or put away any guitars I may have out on stands if there's going to be a vacuum cleaner running anywhere near there.  I'm under the same orders.  Don't ask me how I know.  It's too painful.

It happened to me as well... on a early 80's pointy-headed 80's SD Charvel 😢

I think some of you guys are overestimating the power of magnetic fields. Things like this obey the inverse square law... the strength at 2mm is 1/4 the strength at 1mm. If you aren't keeping two opposing magnets stuck together with tape or something, it's a non-issue. They aren't cassette tapes!
