Has anybody built a baritone guitar?

What do you need to build a baritone? I've always wanted one and have a couple failed projects that I can rob parts from. Can it be done with just a neck replacement, or does the bridge have to move as well? Or am I missing the boat completely?

Anyone?

I'd love to, Joe, but it's just too nice for my needs. Believe me, I thought about it.

Can someone name some songs where baritone guitars are utilized or featured?

I always thought of six string basses.  That was what was used on Back In The Saddle.  Clint Black's Killin' Time starts off with a lick on a six string bass.

Oh there's just too many to name, Mike. That's why they're so awesome.

Hate that song.

I don't believe that was the question.

Oh.

ETA: I was listening to AC/DC really loud and didn't hear you clearly.

Is there another way?

My son was showing me gear videos of this band last night... guitarist is playing a 27" scale in drop tuning. I think that falls into baritone territory(?)

Anyway - another alternative to Fabulous Thunderbirds for ya :D

I just wrapped up this one this morning, getting the string trees and strap buttons on.  As @Steve Haynie pointed out, the Warmoth necks just bolt on to whatever you've got for instant baritone.  I still need a proper tele-style switch knob, but other than that the looks are as I wanted.  I haven't made any adjustments yet so a good top to bottom setup is still needed.

The problem.  It hadn't occurred to me until I was gathering tools for the setup that trying to intonate a three-barrel bridge on a 28 5/8" scale guitar will make anyone a pussy.  Google says it can potentially be achieved through moving saddles around to different positions and/or turning them upside down to negate any built in "compensation".  Cynic says just go with individual saddles.

Another thought on building one...I tend to jump in and make changes as needed as I go.  Figuring a baritone would need different gauge strings, I grabbed a pack of the EB Slinky baritone strings and checked the box.  It includes a .072 top string.  If you get it through the ferrule without modification, you will NOT have the same luck with the tuner.

This may have contributed to my intonation issues since my string gauges ended up a little hodge-podge.

Even using a Warmoth neck and body, I'll need to shim the neck if I can make the 3-barrel bridge work.  Saddle height is a problem even at the lowest settings.

People complain (as they tend to do) about pickup placement differences between a 21, 22 and 24 fret neck.  Are there not effects from using the baritone neck with Fender-scale pickup placement?  Is this an instance where you'd want a swimming pool route and a custom pickguard?

I've been working on one on-and-off for a few years (a Sonic Blue Jaguar/gold hardware and 3 FilterTrons)...great project, it'll be cool when it's done, but it's taken a back seat to a ton of other projects and, well...life.

Stike has also been working on one for me, which will be even more unique than the one above.

My son has a Baritone Jazzmaster that's a blast to play.

This is mine - a SPECTACULAR neck from D. Kunkle with a super dark rosewood slab and '60s-style headstock.

Got the body done in Sonic Blue to match the headstock, just need to get off my @$$ and put it together...

Metheny plays a lot of acoustic baritone, but here's an enthusiast playing an electric baritone and breaks down the technique and explains the music theory behind it.

And here's a cover of a Metheny composition that really explores the variety of tones, chords, and other figures on a Baritone in Nashville tuning:

There's a wealth of Metheny-performed and inspired covers on various baritones on YouTube.
