RIP... Cancer sucks!

Verily, verily.  It's an equal opportunity destroyer.  Stomach cancer seems to be an especially ugly killer due partly to how often it tends to be diagnosed late in its course.  It's killed a couple of my in-law family members and was quite advanced by the time it was discovered.

Toby always struck me as a guy who added a reasonably genuine rock affectation to his songwriting--essentially what Travis Tritt tried to do in the '90s.  Lyrically, his stuff sometimes veered into the musical equivalent of the mindless dialogue found in the so-bad-it's-good movie Road House.  In fact, in recent years, I took to calling those examples of his music "Retort Rock" due to the subject matter and titles often reflecting a sharp, snarky, or antagonistic posture (e.g., "How Do You Like Me Now", "I Wanna Talk About Me", and understandably, "Courtesy of the Red, White, and Blue").

Anyway, RIP.  The age of 62 is not only too young, but he had a really rough time during the treatment process over the last year-and-a-half.

My wife loved him. I grew to appreciate his ability as a songwriter. One thing for sure, he won't be smoking weed with Willie again.

RIP Toby.

^^^This

My wife has a cousin lives in Norman, OK. Like us, he is out every chance he gets to listen to live music.  A few times he would run into Toby at one of his venues.

Last October he ran into Toby who came up for an encore with a band that was playing.   He told us Toby had lost some weight but looked good.  After reading some of the news outlets, he fought cancer hard to the very end never complaining.  I hope I have that courage.

"Courtesy of the Red, White, and Blue, The Angry American made Toby Keith a household name.

I wouldn't say Keith's song was as popular as Lee Greenwood's "God Bless the USA" .  His songs seemed to be endured to the hard drinking, roughneck, crowds...I  mean some of those women could whoop your ass.

Listening to TK right now and like most artists I gravitate towards, know how to write a good melodic hook, that you can sing to and still sort of hold your beer.   They are the ones that enjoy what the do on stage and it shows.

To Toby Keith's Family, Friends, and fans who loved him, adored him and will genuinely miss him.  My condolences for your loss.

Rest in Peace Mr. Keith.

Chris LeDoux is your patient zero here. Toby Keith and Garth Brooks both loved the guy, even though he himself continued to be a cult artist until his death in in 2005. Not only was he was doing more rock-oriented songs at times back in the 80s, you can hear his rodeo-lyrics in both Brooks' and Keith's early stuff. "Should've Been a Cowboy" and "Rodeo" could have been Chris LeDoux songs.

For example:

Going back to Keith, he got lumped into the bro country thing post "Courtesy...," but he was second only to Garth in being a true representative of where the Oklahoma country scene was while he was coming up.
