velorush Posted February 6, 2009 Posted February 6, 2009 I need to get a case for my Special. What do you guys do for cases? I missed a Hamer case on eBay this week with a BIN for around $75, shipping included (doh!). There is another Hamer case on eBay right now for an all-in price of around $100, but the seller says that a Les Paul fits in the case and the Special doesn't seem to be as thick as a Lester. I certainly don't need a vintage case and I don't suppose it necessarily has to be Hamer, but I would like one that is a good fit for the guitar and one that is well made. Given our earlier discussion on the lines of 'where do all the cases go?' I am sure you guys have come up with something. Thanks
cmatthes Posted February 6, 2009 Posted February 6, 2009 The Hamer GC-1 Case (fits Specials, Sunbursts, Studio Customs, Eclipse models, etc.) is basically the same as the Gibson 535 case (Les Pauls). There are tons of non-Hamer/Gibson makers out there that make suitable replacements if you're looking for one. If it'll fit a Les Paul, the Special should fit with no problems.
Camstone Posted February 6, 2009 Posted February 6, 2009 Have you put a "WTB" posting in the For Sale forum here? Someone here has one. If I was looking for a Hamer case, I would ask this brood of vipers first. There are dealers among us as well that have used cases.

Creme P-90s, bound and crowned AND bound f-holes?!!
velorush Posted February 6, 2009 Author Posted February 6, 2009 Duotone deluxeGASP! [hijacking my own thread] That is spectacular! I was posting questions about a three-hole Duotone just this week, but this guitar is on another level altogether.
veatch Posted February 6, 2009 Posted February 6, 2009 Check with BCR Greg. Unless you're on a tight budget, new cases really aren't that much more than what they go for on feeBay, and you don't run the risk of getting one soaked in cat urine or margaritas.
Thundernotes Posted February 6, 2009 Posted February 6, 2009 I just bought a brand-new Hamer GC-8 case from a local dealer. Cost me $124 total and of course it comes with a genuine Hamer cardboard box for the next time GAS strikes!
serial Posted February 6, 2009 Posted February 6, 2009 BCRGreg had a bunch of cool custom GC-1 (same case as the Hamer one, essentially)-types in checkerboard. I picked up a couple or three. Love em. The same case that fits a Special will fit an LP and vice-versa.
Bloozguy Posted February 6, 2009 Posted February 6, 2009 I missed a Hamer case on eBay this week with a BIN for around $75, shipping included (doh!). That case was $74.99 BIN plus $35.00 shipping and the auction ended with no bids so I sent the seller an email offering $90 shipped and paypal'd and he went for it. It's on its way to me now. I don't have a need for it...just picked it up as a spare (or for situations like this one). You can have it the same way I bought it - $90 shipped and paypal'd. Just let me know. Ray

Ray Actually, I was talking about this one (BIN $78, free shipping). It was only up a couple of hours (long enough for me to click "Watch Item" at work, drive home, log in to eBay and kick myself for not clicking BIN when I had the opportunity). That's a great offer, but you'd be out shipping and PayPal! Let me see what Greg has got because I need to buy a couple of parts from him. I'm pretty (okay, really) cheap, so if Greg's are more than I'll go, I'll PM you. Thanks

unfun75 Posted February 6, 2009 Posted February 6, 2009 Just an FYI... I once bought an SKB Les Paul case (SKB56) on clearance in hopes that a Hamer Studio would fit it, but it didn't fit. Wasn't even close! I got my money back so no biggie, but I was disappointed.

Caddie Posted February 6, 2009 Posted February 6, 2009 spend the money & get an honest to goodness Hamer case. Not an LP case. I learned the hardway. Shipped a Studio in an LP case. The neck angle and headstock angle on a LP and on a Studio are just a wee touch different. Just enough to put some unintended forces on the neck. A little rough handling + studio/special + LP case = SCHNepppp!.But the LP case makes for a really nice gigbag for your Hamer!caddie
velorush Posted February 6, 2009 Author Posted February 6, 2009 spend the money & get an honest to goodness Hamer case. I guess I can say I took this advice before it was given. I called BCRGreg and bought the checkerboard case (checkerboard all over). I figure I can always keep the case if (and I can't imagine that I would) I ever sell the Special. Thanks for everyone's help.
Jason01 Posted February 6, 2009 Posted February 6, 2009 Who was it that ordered a Hamer case from musicians friend and it came with a free guitar inside?
veatch Posted February 6, 2009 Posted February 6, 2009 Just an FYI... I once bought an SKB Les Paul case (SKB56) on clearance in hopes that a Hamer Studio would fit it, but it didn't fit. Wasn't even close! I got my money back so no biggie, but I was disappointed. I had an SKB for a Les Paul, and it dented the back of the neck on the Les Paul... After i noticed it, and noticed over time they were getting worse, i rubbed my hand over the part of the case that was touching the neck. I could feel the staples/screws/whatever poking through the hard foam. I was not happy, but it was a player guitar anyways, so no big thang. I'll likely never buy an SKB again, though. Sorry for the hi-jack... But, yes, the case did fit a studio with no issues.
velorush Posted February 7, 2009 Author Posted February 7, 2009 Okay, I've done the search and have come up empty. Does anyone have a photo of the checkerboard case (the one with checkerboard all over, not just the top)? I think Greg has removed all his photos after that scam earlier in the week and most of the posts referring to the cases were his. All the other search hits were just talking about one, not showing one. I'd really like to see one before he ships on Monday. Thanks.
hamerhead Posted February 7, 2009 Posted February 7, 2009 I got checkerboard cases with both my custom orders from Greg. None cooler. They're checkerboard top and bottom, black in the middle. These are GREAT cases (better than stock IMHO). And VERY hard to find. You will not be disappointed.

That is a gorgeous Special (too). I'd love to see other checkerboard case photos if anyone has any handy.
