Callouses, Hand Strength and Years
Brooks replied to BoogieMKIIA's topic in Hamer Fan Club Messageboard
For me, it's my back, especially on 3 hour gigs. Compressed disc from lifting patients for ~14 years. The good news is a lighter call volume since I swapped counties in 2018, and only 1 monthly gig is 3 hours, the other 2 or 3 are 2 hours. I'll be 59 in December (!) -
Diablo those are badass

They are very cool, but my fave is still Casualties Of Jazz;

Last year I rewatched 2001, as I didn't understand it when I saw it decades ago. Still didn't. Went on a deep dive and read that they ended up editing out many scenes that held important plot info due to time constraints. So it actually doesn't make sense, its just visually stunning. Anyway, I'm a big Tap fan and can't wait to see the new movie. We used to do "Tonight I'm Gonna Rock You Tonight" back in the 80s. "You're sweet but you're just four feet and you still got your baby teeth, you're too young and I'm too well hung, but Tonight I'm Gonna Rock You".......

Just got this Japanese RG470 from my medical examiner pal. He tried to sell it to me ~10 years ago, but I was up to my neck in shredders (due to playing in Ded Mullet w/ Stike). Caught his ad right when it went up, went by his place and had a few beers, he also has a sweeeet Ibby Premium RG and a cool one pickup RG. Played it, the action was high and the trem didn't hold tuning (Ibanez branded licensed Floyd), so I asked if i could take it home and tweak it, he said sure (we're pals, gone to concerts & deep sea fishing etc). Shimmed the neck and "half blocked" the trem (dive only) and BAM I no longer had an excuse not to buy it! Probably will swap pickups at some point, but after adjusting the height & polepieces it sounds good. Nice hardshell case, too (not that I care, I'm a gigbag guy).

Researching all things Plexi: suggestions wanted
Brooks replied to Travis's topic in Hamer Fan Club Messageboard
I got mine used, it was ~$450 IIRC. Actually just sold it, selling the 4x12 tomorrow. I'm not playing any rock gigs, and if I do again someday I'll use the Fender, its plenty loud. -

Slipknot gets better and more raw every year.
Brooks replied to Saul Goodman's topic in Hamer Fan Club Messageboard
Slipknot hits me the same way that Slayer does, meaning that I don't like 96% of what they do, but there's a small contingent of tunes that are less intense than the rest, and those are actually pretty good; -
Big Ibby fan over here, that's a beauty

Ok, I love this

TBH, I'm not a big FX guy, so all trems/phasers/flangers/delays basically sound the same to me. I am picky about OD/distortion, & like most multi FX units, they don't sound great to me here. Their Optical Comp is very usable for my clean sound. There are some cool wacky FX (like the reverse echo, very Are You Experienced?), some synthy tones, slicer, EQ, amp sims w/ selectable cabs, etc, again 80% of it is not something I use but it is a super handy pedal for me (tuner/delay/comp/phase/trem/reverse). You can hear all the sounds I use on it here; -

I have the Zoom unit (MS50?), it does all of this. I use it mostly for tuner & delay, but sometimes I'll throw in some trem or comp. It has a cool reverse echo too. -
Mastodon is the "newest" metal band that I really dig. They have the ability to sound both progressive and raw at the same time, which is unique. It was love/hate when I 1st heard their 2nd album Leviathan; loved the riffs/drums/solos, hated the screamy vocals (apparently, they had a lead vocalist before their 1st album who quit the eve of their 1st van tour). Next album Blood Mountain had some singing, less screaming, even more killer riffs and arrangements. There's a chicken pickin' off-time section on Capillarian Crest that was amazing, sounded like the cd was skipping, one of the most original things I've heard in metal (at 1:39); They removed almost all the screaming on Crack The Skye and subsequent albums, sounding almost mainstream metal (they caught some flak from hardcore fans but I preferred it). I kinda moved on after Once More 'Round The Sun; My pal Dave texted me this morning. We had an acoustic duo for 15 years and a short lived country band, which ended when he moved to Alabama a few years ago. Brent Hinds is from that area. Dave now plays in a blues band w/ a mortician, they rehearse at his funeral home. Brents funeral is at that same place, they are borrowing Daves Bose PA for the service.

Me too. Great doc, watched it a few days ago. I saw DEVO on the New Traditionalists tour (w/ the Elvis rubber hair) when I was in jr high ~81 and they were a lot more heavy & rockin' in concert compared to their albums. I really dig late 70s/early 80s mainstream new wave stuff like Devo/Cars/Pretenders/Talking Heads/Joe Jackson/Elvis Costello/etc. This stems from an older punk rocker pal, who introduced me back then to a great local DFW band called the Telefones. We covered one of their tunes at my 8th grade talent show, which led to me sitting in w/ them at some punk dive bar when I was in 9th grade. Good times. All these bands are represented in my new wave-ish spotify playlist (that's the Telefones b&w pic from their 2nd album);

Saw them ~94 in a medium sized club in Raleigh NC, kickarse! This band Flipp opened, they were fun and had a killer multi color Kustom tuck & roll backline; -

This is a big one. Dweezil Zappa meets The Captain.
Brooks replied to Saul Goodman's topic in Hamer Fan Club Messageboard
Thx for posting. Dweezil & Eric Gales did a couple of tunes at Experience Hendrix many years back, they stole the show IMHO. I dig what he's doing w/ Franks music (esp learning all the insane written parts that Frank had horns & marimba sight reading). -
Yeah, if I sold them they weren't holding my interest anymore.

Cool!
