Random (Music and Guitar Related) Thoughts Thread
hamerhead replied to LucSulla's topic in Hamer Fan Club Messageboard
Who's the alien with the abnormally large head in the lower right? That's like a head and a half. Even his hair couldn't keep up. -
Shawn, I love your passion for these things! And I should really hate Fender for what they did to Hamer. But I've had the same '64 Vibrolux since I started playing (53 years) and it is still what I judge all other amps by. Maybe that's why boutique amps never really did anything for me - I've owned a 'grail' almost since day 1 and gigged it regularly. There's also a '63 Pro Amp and a '67 Princeton here as well. But now none of them leave the house because it would suck if anything happened to them. Which is kinda the point of wanting the DRTM - a light, simple, toss-it-in-the-truck-and-go-with-no-worries amp that I won't lose sleep over if it gets stolen, bumped, bruised or even blowed up. The weight is the #1 factor as my back is AFU, and being that close to 'the sound' really seals it. While I've heard nothing but good things about Dr. Z amps for years (and would gladly take one if they were handing them out), it's just not something that would fill this particular need.

Who Needs Crunch When You’ve Got a Hamer? :))))))

Nice! Has a real Satriani feel to it. -

Probably due to Pop and Country having more '80s Rock in them. Strip away them godawful twangy vocals and Country IS '80s/'90s Rock. -

Mine haven't missed a beat. They don't get used nearly as much as yours, but they're still working great!- 1 reply

The real problem with tube amps is inconsistency - one day they sound amazing, the next meh. They are finicky and don't like being manhandled. The 'sweet spot' is typically louder than I need to be 90% of the time, especially in Madison Square Basement. And tubes, that need replacing more often than I like to do it, have gotten stupid expensive. This solid state crap repeats every time - hot, cold, humid - it doesn't matter, it's going to sound the same every time you plug into it. Even after bouncing around in the back of a truck you can plug in and not worry about tubes rattling loose or worse, getting broken. The light weight is a huge plus. My SuperChamp (in an aftermarket 1x12 combo cab) is 35 pounds. The DRTM is 20. Will I be selling off my old Fender stuff? Nope. I've tried plenty of other brands and always go back to Fender. And I've used other other SS amps that sound great (Roland Cube 60, Boss Katana 50), but they always include the kitchen sink, which I don't really want or need. The Tone Masters seem to have nailed 99% of the real deal vibe without a bunch extra stuff - or tubes - and that's a pretty huge part of the appeal. YMMV.

And if you haven't tried 'The Rosalind' (formerly known as the 'Cowpie Custom'), do it today! Josh loves building those. Thanks again, Josh! -

Looks a lot like a Bigsby. What am I missing? -
I love it! Nearly perfect but needs more black, you know, to hide the flame better.... ....and yes, I ordered mine that way. Stealth flame is cool.

If that is true....damn. 9 years bedridden? He didn't go soon enough. I didn't get the hype around Bad Company until much later on - always liked the band, just didn't understand the gushing. When the light finally did come on, Mick Ralph's guitar work made perfect sense. He was never flashy but always perfect for the song and perfect for Bad Company. Thank you, Mr. Ralphs for all of the great music. R.I.P.

Okay, Gents — thoughts on Daytonas?
hamerhead replied to draelyc's topic in Hamer Fan Club Messageboard
The Daytona is a cut above a Strat the same way Hamer set-necks are a cut above Gibsons - everything is just better. I've been lucky enough to own 4 over the years ( 1 of which is my only true 'the one that got away' story) and they've all been really well done. Check the weight - some are heavy, but it doesn't change the quality of the build. If you prefer the flatter fretboard of a Hamer (vs Fender's 7.25" or 9"), definitely get one. It was great to finally find a Strat that played right.
