Brooks Posted August 24, 2006 Posted August 24, 2006 big brown truck dropped this cool box off yesterday; inside was the twin of my #1; another thin neck early 90's duotone. 4 digits higher serial #, upgraded w/ a rio grande bridge humbucker, straplocks, and pearloid tuner buttons. thanx to silentman and his pal rob for steering this my way. a little chrome and a neck phatcat and it'll be good to go, i'm diggin' the bridge rio, rawk owt! edit: i need to clean my deck. i like how the bird poop brings out the pearloid position markers, ha.
kizanski Posted August 24, 2006 Posted August 24, 2006 Perfect for the "no Honey, it's the same guitar" defenense.Just as long as they're never ever on display at the same time again.
ZR Posted August 24, 2006 Posted August 24, 2006 I have a natural 3-holer like that w/ a Rio in the bridge too but mine's newer and has a thicker neck. : (
MCChris Posted August 24, 2006 Posted August 24, 2006 Gotta love when someone finds a model of guitar that suits him perfectly. Nice addition Brooks!
bbobb24 Posted August 24, 2006 Posted August 24, 2006 Beautiful!! I've always loved the look of those 3 hole Duotones....I think I'll get one....
Rockola Posted August 24, 2006 Posted August 24, 2006 All the cool mods, right out of the box. I thought you liked (or had) a SD Jazz in the neck at one time. S.
anotherfreak2 Posted August 24, 2006 Posted August 24, 2006 Hey Brooks, tell me about that Rio, I've got Seths in mine and I'm thinking of trying something else. oh, congrats on the "spare" it's beautiful!
Guest galejt Posted August 24, 2006 Posted August 24, 2006 I bought back the 96 I sold HM. Nice chunky munky neck it has. Casting around for pups now. Hard hit to replace the 57s that were in it. Such a nice dirty sound. VPAFS are too too bright. Up next, Darkbursts. Also none more black (except for that bridge thingy)
silentman Posted August 24, 2006 Posted August 24, 2006 That guitar had a JB in it when I picked it up. Played with it for a bit, something was missing. The Rio opened up the guitar and fattened up the sound. Handles gain very well. I really liked the 59 in the neck of that guitar. Very sweet.
Brooks Posted August 24, 2006 Author Posted August 24, 2006 i like the bridge rio very much, it rawks owt!! better than the JB that came in my 1st duotone (or the goldtop i had awhile back). i also like the phatcats in both positions. for my tastes in tone, you can't beat a phatcat in the neck slot of a spruce duotone, this is 80% of my tone in the jazz/funk project. in the past i've used duncan jazz and dimarzio "hum from hell" in the neck slot of various guitars (gibson LP & SG, hamer slammer series & 25th annv). they are both bright sounding, as i don't like most neck humbuckers, too muddy to my ear. something about the duotones semihollow spruce/phatcat/wood bridge is just right for me. i have phatcat pups in my mahogany special; bridge pup sounds really good in an ac/dc sabs kinda way, but the neck pup's just ok. thanx again & much love to silentman & rob. rob just emailed me this historical factoid; "By the way, the guitar you got was on the road with Martina Mcbride, that’s why the hsc looks a bit battered." ps- who's martina mcbride? ha.
Guest pirateflynn Posted August 24, 2006 Posted August 24, 2006 One day I'll get one of those. Congrats!

Yeah, I got it from the guitarist (can't remember the name of the guy) who played with her. Nice guy, spoke to him on the phone a bit. I got him to pull the ebay auction on it.
