atquinn Posted May 5, 2005 Posted May 5, 2005 Ex-Action Figures / GrindBrilliant, brilliant songwriting. As far as I know, they never tried to make it big. I heard of 'em when I was going to grad school at the University of Wisconsin.-Austin

What ever happened to those guys? I lost track of them after their second CD.Wide Mouth Mason-they opened for Kenny Wayne Sheppard and in my opinion blew him away. Something about that guitar player's style just hit me.Also:Killer DwarfsBang TangoCompany of Thieves
Ethan Posted May 6, 2005 Posted May 6, 2005 Someone said HUM!! I LOVE HUM!! I've been listening to Downward is Heavenward twice a day for the past week or so now. I'd also like to add Sticks & Stones and Lifetime to the list.
DaveH Posted May 6, 2005 Posted May 6, 2005 Here's three of mine:MoxyRiot (no, NOT Quiet Riot!)The GodzMoxy was strictly a 70's band, but they were ahead of their time...a Canadian band that really kicked serious ass. Riot is still around I believe, but after their original lineups ('76-'81) I lost interest...the early stuff kicks ass, Mark Reale is an awesome player. The Godz are still around too I think, although not recording...again, late 70's into the '80s, they're just a biker band from Ohio that liked to party and played good rock n roll.

I've got too many droppings on this thread, but need to respond to this one.Dave -- on Moxy, I could not agree more... I've got all their stuff, and still listen to it weekly. Even have the Under The Lights (with Mike Reno), but do not listen to that one very often, LOL. Earl Johnson is extremely cool. I emailed him years ago, asking him about guitars and equipment the band used. He treated me like a long lost friend, through several emails back and forth. Really a neat guy.Riot -- another winner. I have all the Guy Speranza stuff (RIP, The Best!), and the first couple with Rhett (RIP). I was doing radio when Fire Down Under came out, and their management must have been tipped off that I was playing it, as I received a "Thank You" post card... pertty cool.Godz -- Gotta Keep Runnin' -- a true classic!

Demented, Raging Slab was pretty good and do you mean 10 Star General from Boston? I know those guys, part of that band is from Left Nut who are one of my favorite Boston bands ever. Theywere awesome and feared no one. the guitarist Barry is incredible. If you liked 10 star you'd love Left Nut... BTW: DaveH and Saxon, I totally agree on Riot, why they never hit it with Fire Down Under is beyond me. Don't get me wrong, I liked Rhett Forrester (RIP) butnot sure why they canned Guy Speranza which in retrospectseemed like a big mistake...
Brooks Posted May 6, 2005 Posted May 6, 2005 +1 on raging slab, great band but their albums are hit & miss(kinda like some other bands i should add to this list, likekings x, wino, c.o.c., or fishbone).

Godz -- Gotta Keep Runnin' -- a true classic! Hey there Saxon, Neat little tidbits that you shared there, thanks. Nobody, and I mean NOBODY that I seem to talk to has ever heard of these bands, so it's really cool to run into someone who has not only heard of them, but still listens to them on a regular basis like myself. Buzz Shearman and Guy Speranza are two of my all time favorite rock n roll singers. You'd automatically get two points if that system was still in effect here! Btw, they realeased a Moxy compilation about 8 years ago titled 'Self Destruction', which contained a single by the Buddy Caine Band.....have you ever seen a release by them? It was a pretty cool cut. I'd like to find an album from them if there's one out there anywhere. Dave L: I was under the impression that it was Speranza who grew weary and quit the band, rather than being ousted(?). Either way, both he and Rhett were dealt some pretty crappy ways of checking out of this life. The early Riot SHOULD have made it big, but were ultimately set up for failure by the the record company....Sammy Hager sort of layed a screwing on them too, from the accounts I've read.
elduave Posted May 8, 2005 Posted May 8, 2005 Love Nut: Their second CD "Baltimucho" was scheduled for release on Interscope, but apparently the deal fell through. Eventually released on an Indie. Brilliant Power Pop. Andy Bopp went on to form Myracle Brah. They've got some killer stuff too, but in my opinion there is a bit more filler. Baltimucho is a great album. I saw them once. I wish they would have hung in there...
elduave Posted May 8, 2005 Posted May 8, 2005 UFO and Thin Lizzy should have been householdnames in america, why they weren't I don't know... Circus of Power: another excellent 90's NY band their firstalbums completely ROCKS... Kix: I always thought Kix should have been huge but theyalways confused the hell out of me. Their first albumwas a killer fun rock and roll album and then did cool kids, which was kind of new wave-ish... and the next album sounded like ratt and then the next one sounded like motleycrue, yet at the same time, they always had this AC-DC obsession... still a kickass live band... 10-4 on UFO. I have lots of boots if you ever want to trade.I went through a pretty hardcore Circus Of Power phase. Saw them open for Faith No More at Hammerjacks (Balt., MD)I think Kix actually "made it". "Don't Close Your Eyes" was a Top 10 Billboard track IIRC. Saw that friggin' band more times than I can remember. At least twenty I'm guessing. I have some of their boots as well. Always very entertaining. Steve Whiteman was one of the best frontmen of that era, and the rest of the band was pretty "hip" with their look in the hair and spandex days.
elduave Posted May 8, 2005 Posted May 8, 2005 I have the Expanding Man cd. Never heard another thing about them, after their major label debut. The Odds -- great power pop songwriters, but the lyrics always struck me as ... well, Odd, and just plain too quirky. Chris-I have Expanding Man's shelved second release "Love & Disaster". It's even better than "Head To The Ground". We got to know those guys pretty well, to the point where they requested Spitshine (my wife's band at the time) to open for them at Fletchers. That was a great night. The band actually stayed with us for a couple of days and recorded in my project studio. Send me your address and I'll send you L&D along with the stuff they did at my house.Well put about Odds, but I didn't mind the quirk.
elduave Posted May 8, 2005 Posted May 8, 2005 Hey El, I didn't think anyone knew who The Yahoos were. Terry Anderson is a good friend and a certified nut job. Yeah man! Dan Baird is amazing. I saw them at Iota in Arlington, VA. You could tell just from watching them that TA was a crazy dude. I highly reccomend their album "Fear Not The Obvious" to any fan of foot stomping Tele rawk with well written songs. Bottle And A Bible? Fuckin' A!
mario Posted May 8, 2005 Posted May 8, 2005 The Rockets from Detroit, Michigan. Great band! Also, there was a great punk band possibly my fellow Canadian forum members might have heard of from the late seventies called The Demics. They were from my hometown. If it were not for them and other punk bands from that era, I would have never picked up the guitar.
elduave Posted May 8, 2005 Posted May 8, 2005 Curently:The Wildhearts "Must Be Destroyed" is a classic. Steer clear of Riff After Riff though. With the right producer, they would stand a much better chance of making a bigger splash...
elduave Posted May 8, 2005 Posted May 8, 2005 Let's see:Riverdogs - Vivian Campbell on guitars, fantastic rock with a blues twist +2. That first album is killer. Have you heard the album where they do a version of every song acoustic? It's called "On Air" and it'ss all from different radio station apperances.
elduave Posted May 8, 2005 Posted May 8, 2005 Love/Hate Hell yeah! Some if the best PARTY music ever made!
elduave Posted May 8, 2005 Posted May 8, 2005 How did Guy from Riot die? I'm sure you all have the Riot video with Guy from My Fathers Place in NY, right?
