So, Led Zeppelin...

Now Foreigner, a rock juggernaut still percolating with freshness and vitality ... THAT'S gonna be a problem.

My God, Foreigner. I totally forgot about Foreigner. I can't imagine what it must feel like to play "I Want To Know What Love Is" in a 600 seat Indian casino auditorium outside of Boise.

Think of all the kids that stayed up late in their bedrooms trying to figure the riffs on Agent Provocateur. That record could come out ten years from now and people would be going nuts over it.

Mick Jones - now THERE'S a sloppy guitar player.

Here's something cool. An e-mail from Dave Grohl to Ross Halfin (famed lensman) that mentions Steve Gorman (monster drummer for The Black Crowes) and their experiences the night of the show:

Dave Grohl tells it like it is...

Sir,

Just wanted to thank you for being so accommodating to me and my cast of nerds the other night. It was an epic night, to say the least. Arriving at 10 am that morning, sleeping for three hours, heading to the bottle shop for refreshments to take with in the van, pissing like a Clydesdale upon arrival to the gig, and then the mighty Zeppelin.

Highlights:

For Your Life. Maybe my favorite song of the night, except for Kashmir, which was beyond spot on.

The dry ice machine.

Black Dog. Like they never stopped playing it.

Asking Marilyn Manson if I can give him a hickey. "No". Asking his girlfriend if I can give her a hickey. "Sure!" To which Marilyn replied "No".

Not understanding one fucking word that Liam Gallagher said to me.

Steve Gorman. A good guy.

Peter Mench being nice to me. Sign of the apocalypse? Perhaps.

The entire 2 hours that the band performed.

Without sounding like a cunt, I had waited to see that my whole life, and it did not disappoint. Of course, I had always dreamed about being behind that drum set, but the sheer thrill of being there overcame any envy that I may have had. Jason was fucking great. Face it, he had people like me, Chad Smith, and Steve Gorman watching his every move, all night long, and afterwards we all agreed that he played great. Just three jealous drummers, drinking away our life long dreams of one day jamming with the greatest rock band of all time. Fucking pathetic, we were.........

Anyway, I just wanted to thank you for including us in everything. It meant the world to me.

Congratulate the boys for me. Hope they take this circus on the road. If there's an opening for drum tech, you know my number.

[shakes head]

This is the first time in a long time I feel that I've really missed out on something special.

That's cool.

Grohl is awesome.

Grohl is cool. I hate to say it, but Kurt Cobain offing himself is the best thing that could have happened to Grohl.

Suicide or not, he'd have split that scene soon enough.

You're probably right.

I dig the fact that Grohl just comes off as a class act no matter what. And that he's obviously a fan like most of the rest of us.

Hijack number 1,000,0000... Grohl can PLAY the drums! Sometimes it can be forgotten but MAN the drumming on Killing Joke's 2003 release is mighty. That was another band Grohl is a fan of, but this time he DID get to sit on the throne with them.

Let's throw another log on this already volatile thread, shall we?

And that he's obviously a fan like most of the rest of us.

That, however, is why the "Rock Star" persona that just oozes out of guys like Page and Plant doesn't exist anymore. Grohl's fanboi ramblings do not a larger-than-life figure make.

I've been thinking about everything in this thread, and for me, it's not about Jimmy Page really....it's about what I hear in LZ as a whole: a massive, majestic sound that gives me goose bumps. Don't know why, but it does.

Oh man! What about Zakky Vengeance? ;)

Getting back to the thread I stirred up, I agree with the above.

I still have the entire Led Zep studio catalog on CD (multiple box sets that cover everything, not all the individual albums) and before that I had all the albums on cassette. I listened to them a lot in high school and college, and learned a lot of their songs.

The writing, arranging, production, and unique blend of rock and blues with celtic and medieval folk is something that had never been done before, and hasn't been equalled since.

It's been said that the solo on Stairway to Heaven was a first-take (or at least a one-take) and it fits the song perfectly. Jimmy can certainly nail a performance in the studio. I also agree that he seems to play acoustic a lot better than electric.

So I CAN set aside Page's sloppy live playing and appreciate the greater musical significance of the entire band. But it still bugs me and I prefer the studio recordings in most cases.

I just wanna say I'm really glad that they played STH. Why, do you ask? So that Jessica Simpson, Pink, & Rachel Evan Woods would get to hear the only Zep song that they're probably familiar with.
