What pedals would you get...

Ok, I'm set with my guitar and bass. Now if you were in my shoes you'd have a guitar and bass and amps for each, at least for now, but that'll be another thread in the near future. . Now, which pedals would you go for first? Would you do distortion? Delay? Reverb?(my amps don't have built in reverb) Or something else?

Thanks for your opinions.....

None, nada, zilch. Plug 'n play, baby!

something that will facilitate clean, gain, and a level/sustain boost (for solos). when using pedals, i get a good clean tone from the amp, then i use an OD, & a comp to boost for solos (clean or gainy). but since i got my H&K switchblade, i have different presets w/ various gain/EQ/volume settings (& delay).

& a tuner.

Assuming that your amps have acceptable levels of overdrive, I'd recommend a multi-effects unit like a Line6 MM4 (modulation modeler). That one has phasers, flangers, rotovibes, choruses and even a ring modulator.

Reverb is really key too, but it's tough to find one that sounds natural w/o being a tank (literally). I have an old Guyatone that is nice, but they don't make those anymore-figures.

That's a pretty wide open question. It depends on what type of music you play and what your amp can do.

If you do want distortion, it does depend on what type. Typically, tho, you can get distortion from your amp, from pedals, or a combination. One thing would be to get a cleaner sounding amp that when boosted distorts. In that case, there are a few pedals that have seperate boost/distortion functions/footswitches, which would give you clean, amp overdriven by boosting, and stompbox distortion into clean.

Even at that, it depends on whether you want to do leads or chords. Some stompboxes are great at leadwork, but have absolutely no note separation, making them useless for chords. Others are great for chords, but are anemic for single notes.

So, what you after?

Some type of OD/distortion, wah, and delay. Things like flangers, phasers, filters, octavers, tremolos, etc. are all season-to-taste effects IMO.

Thanks for all the replies folks. I mainly play a really bad style of blues/rock. I'm a hack, and I'm ok with it. A man's got to know his limitations right? Anyway, I've been reading some reviews on multi effect units and it seems like a lot of them come with things I would probably never use, but on the other hand they're a lot cheaper than buying a handful of single pedals, and some of them have built in drum machines, which I like a lot. My amps, at the moment are a 15 watt Velocette and a 5 watt Swart Space Tone, so natural distortion from my amp is very doable. I accually wanted to check out some stuff last week when I picked up my guitar and bass, but time just ran out. Maybe there's another road trip in my future!!

Ahh, it's fun to look for new stuff isn't it!!

Thanks for all the pointers Gentlemen!! It's all greatly appreciated.

After one of the better floor processors - a Boss GT-8, and one of the best rackmounts - a TC Electronic G-Force, I went back to what I use about 99% of the time - a "kick in the pants" type overdrive and a H2o delay/chorus pedal. True love.

Tube Screamer to boost and scream. a nice tuner (korg DT10), Hate to add because I really dont care for, but, I can see where it would be great for you, Line 6 mm4(?) the multi modulator effect pedal, it will give ya lots of programable options for modulation FX's. That be a god start with some fun added

Get a Tubescreamer and a nice Wah.

That's what I like to fool around with...

TC Electronics just introduced their new Nova System multi-effects unit. This thing really looks interesting - but it's a bit pricey - about 700.- EUR over here. But it's got just about everything: OD, boost, reverb, delay and modulation, plus compression and noise gate. And it looks simple to use for analog geeks, even though it's all digital except for the OD/boost section.

For doing the blues rock thing, you don't need much. A floor tuner is handy, but not necessary IMO until you start performing on stage. I'll go +1 on an OD/boost pedal for doing leads, a wah pedal, and a reverb if you want to add that in the mix. I like my EHX Holy Grail.

less is more for me today... a boss fa-1 is really all I use here at home...

my [old] board is all boss >

dm-2, dd-2, ce-2, dc-3,bf-2,ph-1,rv-2,od-1,hr-2 with a j-5,

powered with dual psm-5's

my small [main] board is a dm2,dd-2,rv-2,bf-2

I dont really need any of it other than the delays and fa-1
