Feynman Posted January 2, 2009 Posted January 2, 2009 Why is it so hard to nail that tune? I want to learn it SO badly, but I am lacking something - I see through extensive YouTube searches that I am not alone. It is frustrating.People who perfected itJimiSRVPeople who failEveryone else I find, even guitarists I love in general. What does it take? Anyone else able to pull this off? Links?Does this require having a gigantic unit?
veatch Posted January 2, 2009 Posted January 2, 2009 Fer me, the problem is the right hand. It takes a very aggressive right hand to nail that tone. When i've played it, there will be moments when i think, "There it is!" Those brief moments fade quickly though, and never make up for my butchery in the rest of the song... Great new sig, BTW...
Feynman Posted January 2, 2009 Author Posted January 2, 2009 Great new sig, BTW... I'm not so happy with it, but I needed a placeholder while waiting for a moment of cleverness.
silentman Posted January 2, 2009 Posted January 2, 2009 The problem is it sounds deceptively simple. I'll stick to purple haze and avoid embarassment.
hardheartedbill Posted January 2, 2009 Posted January 2, 2009 it's the switching between the bass strings and the treble w/ the right hand thats tricky, it's a feel thing, think of the wound strings and the plain as 2 guitars, low and high, stay really loose w/ your right hand and keep a back and forth RH motion, your gonna be doing alot of upstokes on the plain strings ( there is alot of crosstalk on the D and G strings in this concept )the decending figure can be decieving, it's a D @ the 5th fret A string and B @ the 4th fret mute the D and let the EB ring open, then drop down to C# 4th fret A string and A @ the 2nd on the G, same muting and open strings
bubs_42 Posted January 2, 2009 Posted January 2, 2009 Duh, all you need is GIANT MARSHALLS!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LjB5_kv0QAw
belgian Posted January 2, 2009 Posted January 2, 2009 Take a look at Gov't Mules version on "The Deepest End" dvd.Good version on that one and a lot of close-ups of Warren Haynes playing it.
Feynman Posted January 2, 2009 Author Posted January 2, 2009 Duh, all you need is GIANT MARSHALLS!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LjB5_kv0QAwOK - That is an impressive performance.
unfun75 Posted January 2, 2009 Posted January 2, 2009 I've never heard anyone nail the intro like Jimi. Even SRV lacks a little something. I think the way-over-production in the studio and the one-of-a-kind effects Jimi were using makes people think they're not playing it right but they probably are. If you're close, I'm sure it's good.
Crwth145 Posted January 2, 2009 Posted January 2, 2009 Brother Randy (Stevie's friend) has been playin' this one for quite a while now... Can't tell ya' how to play it well... that's one you're just gonna have to figure out for yourself.
unfun75 Posted January 2, 2009 Posted January 2, 2009 Duh, all you need is GIANT MARSHALLS!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LjB5_kv0QAwWow, that dude is creepy, but pretty good! What's up with his teeth? Those two amp stacks are killer, though.edited to add: I watched a few more of his vids and that dude is more than pretty good, he's pretty amazing.

Rocktuna Posted January 3, 2009 Posted January 3, 2009 Saw a video of him and he walked out into the crowd and people were backing away....frightened.Man he's fugley.
BubbaVO Posted January 3, 2009 Posted January 3, 2009 The band is good. Damn good. He maybe homely but he's got the chops.
JGale Posted January 3, 2009 Posted January 3, 2009 I swear to God I heard it played on bass flawlessly one day on the radio. Have never found it online though.I thought it might have been Dean Peer, but sadly, no.
Feynman Posted January 3, 2009 Author Posted January 3, 2009 Just some reference material:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dw1Lvn5g62I

HSB0531 Posted January 3, 2009 Posted January 3, 2009 That's great!!Had to send it to my guitar players. It's what we've been missing all these years.
yngwie308 Posted January 10, 2009 Posted January 10, 2009 I haven't seen this rare version yet. From a Washburn NAMM show, with Steve playing his natural finish Washburn ss 80:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HFZpkH8_1zg...=1&index=58yngwie308
hamersandstrats Posted January 10, 2009 Posted January 10, 2009 There is a killer version on that Purple Box set. I don't think SRV ever nailed the intro quite like Jimi, but he does kill in the extended solos.Jimi just seems to play with complete abandon, takes more risks and has more control over the sonic landscape then SRV.Buddy Guy does a good Voodoo Chile, I dont know if theres any videos of him though.
